This undated photo shows Chinese President Hu Jintao (front,C) visits the Shenyang Blower Works Group Co., Ltd. in northeast China's Liaoning Province. Hu inspected the province from Dec. 12 to Dec. 14, 2008.    SHENYANG, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao called for maintaining a stable and healthy economic growth amid the challenges in industrial restructuring, export, employment and people's lives during his visit to northeast Liaoning Province from Friday to Sunday.     Hu paid a visit to Liaoning, a center of heavy industries, after the annual Central Economic Work Conference, setting the tone for next year's economic development, closed on Wednesday.     "Our top economic target next year is to maintain a stable and healthy growth," he said at a meeting with the provincial officials. "We should be clear about the serious challenges and difficulties from home and abroad but also realize the great opportunities and favorable conditions in it."     He listed several works the country would do, such as to seriously implement macroeconomic policy, to boost economic restructuring, to greatly enhance capacities for independent innovations, to control pollution and protect the environment and to deepen the reform and opening-up.     Hu also stressed that to maintain social stability was very important when the economic development faced some problems.     During his visit here, the president paid visits to three large state-owned enterprises.     At a new assembly line of Angang Steel Co. Ltd., the first steel producer founded by the People's Republic of China, Hu inquired about its business perspective.     "As a leading company in our steel industry, we hope you to take the advantage of your technology and scale to contribute to the country's economic growth," he said.     Hu expected these state-owned enterprises to focus more on research and development so that they could develop more core technologies, maintain a technical advantage and catch up with the world leading level.     Export-oriented enterprises were widely affected by the global financial crisis.     The president was concerned about their conditions and visited two companies during his stay here.     Visiting a joint venture clothing manufacturer in Yingkou city of Liaoning, he learned that the number of overseas orders it received for next year dropped month after month.     "I hope you to be more confident in face of difficulties," he said. "While maintaining the traditional markets (Europe and U.S.A.), you may try to explore new markets."     At Shenyang Yuanda Aluminium Industry Engineering Co. Ltd, Hu was glad to learn that the company's revenue reported a year-on-year rise of 72 percent in the first ten months this year and the value of overseas orders increased by 1.5 times.     "This was very rare and commendable in a shrinking international market," he said. "I hope you to continue the strategy to win clients through quality products." This undated photo shows Chinese President Hu Jintao (C) talks with a job provider at the human resource market of Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province. Hu inspected the province from Dec. 12 to Dec. 14, 2008.    Hu inspected an metal research institute and a high-tech company during his visit, to show the importance the central government paid to enhancing the capacities for independent innovations.     The Institute of Metal Research under the Chinese Academy of Sciences had an outstanding lab on titanium alloy research and SIASUN Robot & Automation Co. Ltd. was a national research center on Robotics, as well as a base for its industrialization.     The president also expressed great concerns about common people's lives under a condition of economic slowdown.     "Next year's employment market will be very serious, affected by the international financial crisis," Hu said upon visiting an employment service organization.     The country would adopt a "even more active" policy to increase employment, he said, adding that all staff in employment service should work harder.     In a renewed residence community, Hu dropped in the apartment of a retired worker Wan Fu.     In the past three years, 52 new apartment buildings have replaced small and shabby cabins in this community, home to 2,200 families including Wan's. This undated photo shows Chinese President Hu Jintao (2nd,L) talks with an old couple, who just moved into their new house following a residence-rebuild project, in Yingkou of northeast China's Liaoning Province. Hu inspected the province from Dec. 12 to Dec. 14, 2008.     Wan used to live in a 40-square-meter cabin with seven family members but now in a 54-square-meter new apartment only with his wife. Both his sons have new apartments as well.     "The apartment is comfortable, warm and convenient," he told the president. "To buy this apartment, we did not have to borrow any money, but just with our savings."     "The harder the economic situation is, the more attention we should pay to people's lives. The central government has decided to invest more in public service," Hu said.     He promised that more people like Wan would move into new homes and retired workers would have higher pension.

KUWAIT CITY, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang and Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah agreed to expand economic and energy cooperation between the two countries during their meeting here on Monday.     "China and Kuwait should form a lasting, stable and comprehensive partnership concerning the energy area," Li told the Kuwaiti prime minister, according to a press release from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.     Li said the two sides should deepen cooperation in the energy industries and study ways of joint exploration of both upstream and downstream industries.     He called on both sides to expand cooperation on infrastructure and telecommunication, increase contacts of people, and promote exchanges in the areas of finance, agriculture, science and technology and culture, in a bid to jointly respond to the change of global economic environment.     Li also said China always sees its relations from a strategic perspective with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and its six members, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait.     China is willing to further high level visits, enhance political mutual trust, broaden substantial cooperation and promote peace and stability in the Gulf region, Li said.     Nasser said Kuwait and China have witnessed a strong growth of bilateral trade volume this year, and taken a big step in energy cooperation.     Citing the current global financial crisis, he pledged that Kuwait is ready to further enhance cooperation with China in various fields, adding that Kuwait welcomes Chinese products and enterprises to enter the Kuwaiti market to realize common development.     The Chinese vice premier also visited oil facilities in Kuwait and met with major figures of the oil industry to get a better knowledge of the Gulf Arab state's oil industry and the progress of China-Kuwait energy cooperation.     China and Kuwait renewed their record of bilateral trade volume in 2007 with 3.6 billion U.S. dollars, according to official statistics, a 30-percent growth compared with that of 2006.     China imported 2.3 billion dollars worth of goods from Kuwait in 2007, with 90 percent of oil products, while only exporting 1.3billion dollars of goods to Kuwait.     Li and Nasser also hailed the sound state-to-state relations between China and Kuwait.     Li said relations between China and Kuwait, the first Gulf state to establish diplomatic ties with China, feature "deep friendship between the two peoples, all-along mutual political trust and equal respect."     Expressing his appreciation of Kuwait's support in the issues concerning China's major interests, he said China supports Kuwait's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.     Nasser acknowledged that China was also the first big power to recognize the independence of Kuwait.     Nasser said the Kuwaiti people have been always cherishing a friendly affection towards the Chinese people, and will never forget the firm support and help from the Chinese people.     Kuwait is the final leg of Li's 11-day overseas visit, his first foreign visit since he took office as vice premier in March, which has also taken him to Indonesia and Egypt.

BEIJING, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao, who is also the Chairman of the Central Military Commission, wants Chinese soldiers to adopt core military values.     The traditions include loyalty to country and its people, devotion to their career and upholding military glory.      Hu made the remarks in a recent meeting with senior military leaders in Beijing.     Those values should serve as a strong spiritual force for the soldiers to achieve all-round development and should guide them when implementing their missions, he said.     Hu added, soldiers should serve the people wholeheartedly and put people's interests above everything.

BEIJING, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council Thursday approved a plan to deepen reform and opening up in the southern Pearl River Delta area, where the country's reform and opening up drive was initiated 30 years ago.     The plan was unveiled on the day when the nation was commemorating the 30th anniversary of the 3rd plenary session of the 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which decided to open up the country and reform its struggling economy.     The pioneer area of the country's reform and opening up scheme was urged to accelerate economic restructuring and take the lead in building a resource-conserving and environment-friendly society, according to the plan approved by an executive meeting of the State Council, or the Cabinet.     The plan also pressed the area to promote technologies so as to excel in innovation, and coordinated development in both urban and rural areas was also stressed.     The meeting, presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao, said the area was also to take the lead in deepening reforms and opening up, so that an improved socialist market economy system could be established and a more open economic system could be set up as the region enhances its cooperation with neighbors Hong Kong and Macau.     The meeting said the Pearl River Delta is still maintaining stable and relatively fast development at present, but it also admitted that the area received powerful shocks from the current financial crisis, as there are many smaller and export-oriented enterprises in the region.     To keep the pace of development would be the top priority of the region at the present stage, the meeting said.

BEIJING, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President called on members of all political parties, social organizations and ethnic groups to make concerted efforts to help China maintain steady economic growth in 2009.     Hu made the remarks when meeting leaders of non-communist parties, All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, and public figures without party affiliation on Thursday afternoon.     The meeting was presided by China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin. Vice President Xi Jinping and Vice Premier Li Keqiang also attended the meeting.     Hu first extended New Year greetings to all members of the United Front, a term used by the Communist Party of China (CPC) to describe its policy of uniting political forces representing people of all circles.     He also expressed gratitude for their contribution to China's economic development and social stability in 2008. Chinese President Hu Jintao (3rd R), who is also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), and other Chinese top leaders Jia Qinglin (2nd R), Xi Jinping (4th R) and Li Keqiang (1st R) attend a meeting with representatives of non-communist parties ahead of the Spring Festival in Beijing, capital of China, Jan. 22, 2009. Hu Jintao delivered an important speech at the meeting, which is presided over by Jia Qinglin.    Hu said 2009 marked the 60th anniversary of the establishment of China, and was of crucial importance to the country's modernization.     The top priority of the country in 2009 was to stimulate economic growth, safeguard people's livelihoods, and maintain social stability, Hu said.     These tasks could not be done without the concerted efforts of members of all political parties, social organizations and ethnic groups in the country, he said.     He said maintaining steady economic growth amid the currently disadvantaged situations had posed a major challenge for the governance capacity of the CPC and for the non-communist parties' ability to participate in government and political affairs.     Members of the United Front should take advantage of their extensive resources to further contribute to the economic development of the country, he said.     Hu said year 2009 also marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the system of multi-party cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the Communist Party, and urged non-communist parties to adhere to the system in the coming years.
