If this moderate plan represents a 'down payment' for a larger relief package in early 2021, it will provide restaurants with immediate relief to hold on through the most dangerous point in our business year."While restaurants are having receding revenues, restaurant costs are not declining, and in some cases, increasing, according to the National Restaurant Association’s survey. The survey found that 58% of full service restaurants are expecting to furlough or layoff additional employees over the next three months. That’s with 89% of full service restaurants already operating at below pre-pandemic staffing levels.The National Restaurant Association says that 17% of bars and restaurants fully closed either permanently or temporarily in November due to the pandemic."What these findings make clear is that more than 500,000 restaurants of every business type—franchise, chain, and independent—are in an economic free fall," said Kennedy.The restaurant industry is a major factor in the US economy. The National Restaurant Association says that 15.6 million jobs are tied to the restaurant industry spread across over 1 million locations.Public health experts have warned that indoor dining is problematic as masks cannot be worn while eating and drinking.“It’s clear when you do contact tracing about where you get these outbreaks, it’s bars, indoor seating at restaurants, particularly at full capacity,” Dr. Anthony Fauci said last week in a Facebook conversation with Colorado’s governor. “When you’re in a restaurant, it’s very tough to eat with a mask on unless you figure out something I don’t know about.” 2668

In Oklahoma alone, more than 100 teachers filed to run, and over half of them made it through their primary races in June.“They are getting frustrated with seeing the lack of support, the lack of funding and the lack of leadership out of state legislators in Oklahoma City, making those things possible for educators to be successful,” Crowley expresses.Educators say it’s a frustration that’s been building for years.In 2011, teachers staged a walkout and camped out for weeks at the Wisconsin State Capitol, protesting Gov. Scott Walker’s bill that gutted their unions. Ultimately, they were unsuccessful.But Wisconsin’s Superintendent of Schools saw that as a catalyst and decided to take matters into his own hands.“I believe the best way to fix this is to have an educator as governor of the State of Wisconsin,” says Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tony Evers.Evers will take on incumbent Gov. Scott Walker this November.Cut in funding and teacher pay has been some of the core issues of the protests. There’s a nationwide debate about whether the U.S. should find ways to get the coal industry back up or train workers for new jobs.In eastern Kentucky, families were rocked by a regional recession when the coal industry took a big hit seven years ago.'Their exact words were, 'Due to the decline in the coal market, we're going to have to let you go,' and suddenly I found myself in a place where I had no idea what to do,” said James Johnson, who was let go in 2014.Johnson, who worked as a coal truck supplier in Pikeville, Kentucky, was left at a crossroad. But Johnson found a way to stay in his hometown.He went from coal to coding."Going on four years later, we're still hanging in here," says Johnson, who learned coding with several other former coal workers.Johnson's story isn't unique. It seems like everywhere you go in Pikeville, people are finding ways to survive, outside of the coal.About 21 percent of mining jobs have been eliminated statewide since 2016, forcing people to explore other industries.After nine years working in the mines, resident Harvey Maynard had to look for a new career after being laid off 10 months ago. His skills brought him to baking!"Right now, it's baking donuts!” says Maynard. “Which is a huge change.”Maynard doesn’t just bake—he even decorates, too."Even as a kid I loved to draw, paint, and color,” says Maynard. “I was always very artistic."New jobs are even moving to the small eastern Kentucky city to help. A new distillery opened one month ago; the owners wanted to build there, specifically to help hire coal miners who were out of work.It was a blessing for people like Michael Preston, who after 16 years of working in the coal industry, decided to go back to school. If you're able to donate, make sure you do your homework, and make a plan for your money so that it supports a worthy cause.Court documents from September detail a four-state investigation that shut down a sham charity, which, according to investigators, bilked consumers out of millions. They claimed to use donations to help homeless veterans, breast cancer survivors, and disabled law enforcement. But the real people in need got next to nothing."The fraudsters out there are relying on your generosity your good wishes, the fact that you can’t say no when somebody says something like veterans or children or breast cancer- they want to tug on those heartstrings," said Yael Fuchs, President of the National Association of State Charity Officials (NASCO). "NASCO was formed so that state charity regulators can talk to each other, so that we can learn from each other, so that we can share tips and make sure that we are coordinating our enforcement efforts.”They often work together to take down the bad guys. And when they're not doing that, they're proactively following fundraising drives. “Do we see exorbitant amounts of money going to professional fundraisers- do we see big upticks in the salaries that the leaders of the charity are making,” Fuchs said.They look for ways in which people are being taken advantage of. So, how do you know who's good and who's not? Enter organizations like Charity Navigator. “We’re a database with all of the registered nonprofits in the United States,” said Michael Thatcher, President, and CEO of Charity Navigator. Thatcher says the company has grown to be the largest independent evaluator of nonprofits in the country. Basically, they give you all the tools you need to make the right decisions when it comes to donations.“Never charge the donor for access to the information and never charge the charities to be evaluated so you eliminate any potential conflict of interest,” Thatcher said If you're looking to give this year, he recommends focusing on how the organization is run, how they're making a difference in the world. Review their financial data, and ask questions - lots of questions. "How have they pivoted around COVID and how have they stayed true to their mission and also stayed in business?" Thatcher added.NASCO recommends you do extensive research. And be specific about the "cause" you want to support. “Where is my money going- how will it be used? What we always want people to remember is you don’t want to give to a buzzword you’re not just giving to a cause you’re giving to a particular charity so you want to be able to trust that charity to understand what their programs are.” The need will be big this year.
