The woman who opened fire at YouTube headquarters Tuesday practiced shooting at a gun range hours before the attack, police said. She then took her 9 mm Smith & Wesson handgun to the Silicon Valley campus and shot three people she apparently didn't know, San Bruno police Chief Ed Barberini said. All this because Nasim Najafi Aghdam was upset with YouTube's practices and policies."We know she was upset with YouTube, and now we've determined that was the motive," Barberini said.Aghdam shot and wounded three people before killing herself. Two of her victims have been released from the hospital, and one remains in serious condition.Barberini said the shooter did not have a link or relationship with the three people she shot.  747

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Monday that there are 155 patients under investigation this year for acute flaccid myelitis, a condition that that can cause paralysis and mostly affects children.Of these, 62 have been confirmed by the CDC in 22 states, and the remainder continue to be investigated.Acute flaccid myelitis, also called AFM, is a rare but serious condition that affects the nervous system -- specifically, the area of the spinal cord called gray matter. It affects fewer than one in a million people each year across the country, the CDC estimates. The number of patients under investigation is up from 127 patients a week ago, though no new confirmed cases have been reported. The average age of patients confirmed to have the condition is just 4 years old, and more than 90 percent of cases overall occur in children 18 and younger, according to Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the agency's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. 1003

The sister of Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof was arrested Wednesday on charges of bringing weapons and drugs to her South Carolina high school, authorities said.Morgan Roof, 18, was arrested after a school resource officer at the A.C. Flora High School in Columbia, South Carolina was notified that Roof was carrying marijuana, pepper spray and a knife on campus, the Richland County Sheriff's Department said.Roof had also made an alarming Snapchat post expressing anger about the National School Walkout, The Post and Courier reported. A 17-minute walkout was staged at schools around the country on Wednesday to honor the 17 people killed at Florida's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last month and call for stricter gun control laws.No A.C. Flora High students were harmed Wednesday, authorities said.Roof was charged with simple possession of marijuana and two counts of carrying weapons on school grounds. A judge set a ,000 bond for Roof under the condition that she would not return to the school, CNN affiliate WIS reported. It's unclear whether she has an attorney. In a letter to parents, the high school principal addressed multiple incidents that took place Tuesday and Wednesday on campus, including the one involving Roof."I realize that rumors and the tragic school shootings in Florida are events that can cause anxiety for our students, parents, faculty, and the community," Principal Susan Childs wrote. "Be assured that the safety of our students will always be our top priority. We must continue to work together to maintain a safe and positive learning environment."South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster said "potential tragedy was avoided" Wednesday thanks to the students and educators who reported "suspicious activity" to a school resource officer."We owe a debt of gratitude to all involved who acted so quickly and decisively," McMaster said in a statement."For months, I have called on the General Assembly to join me in placing a trained, certified police officer in every school, in every county, all day, every day," the governor added.Roof's brother, Dylann, was formally sentenced to death last year for killing nine people at a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina in 2015.The-CNN-Wire 2260

The U.S. decline in cigarette smoking could be stalling while the adult vaping rate appears to be rising, according to a government report released Thursday.About 14% of U.S adults were cigarette smokers last year, the third year in a row the annual survey found that rate. But health officials said a change in the methodology make it hard to compare that to the same 14% reported for 2017 and 2018.The adult smoking rate last saw a substantial drop in 2017, when it fell from 16% the year before. The new figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention mean there are more than 34 million adult smokers in the U.S.Meanwhile, about 4.5% of adults were counted as current e-cigarette users last year — about 11 million people. That rate appears to be up from 3.2% in 2018 and 2.8% in 2017. But again, officials said that comparing 2019 with earlier years is difficult because of the survey change. The CDC figures are based on responses from about 32,000 people.Health officials have long called tobacco use the nation’s leading cause of preventable disease and death.___The Associated Press Health & Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education. The White House physician assigned to Vice President Mike Pence, Jennifer Pena, has resigned, his office told CNN in a statement Friday. Pena worked in the White House medical unit."The vice president's office was informed today by the White House Medical Unit of the resignation. Physicians assigned to the vice president report to the White House Medical Unit and thus any resignation would go entirely through the Medical Unit, not the vice president's office," Alyssa Farah, Pence's press secretary, said in a statement to CNN.This comes after CNN reported Tuesday that a Pence doctor privately raised alarms within the White House last fall that President Donald Trump's doctor Ronny Jackson may have violated federal privacy protections for a key patient -- Pence's wife, Karen -- and intimidated the vice president's doctor during angry confrontations over the episode.  890
