SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Months after one of San Diego’s biggest employers was said to be looking to add up to 1,000 jobs, General Dynamics NASSCO instead announced layoffs.In April, NASSCO held a job fair, claiming the company was looking to add up to 1,000 jobs. Robert Godinez, head of the Boilermakers Union Local 1998, says the shipbuilder didn’t hire close to that number.In total, NASSCO notified nearly 1,500 workers that they could be out of a job in September. The shipbuilder told 10News it expects to let go of closer to 350 workers.The layoffs are in relation to a dry dock accident in July that damaged facilities.One of the company’s employees, Glicerio Cortez, says he doesn’t know exactly what happened in July, but he heard of the damage through coworkers. “They say that they heard like a, something like a bomb, something strong and then the water came all the way to the dry dock,” said Cortez.RELATED: NASSCO delivers layoff notices to 1,500 workersVideo captured by Sky10 shows water flooding the dry dock as debris filled the area. Luckily, no one was injured.The July incident isn’t the only reason for the layoffs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 70 non-profit groups and organizations teamed up and collected supplies for the thousands of migrants that arrived in Tijuana after leaving Central America.  Many are looking to enter the United States.Enrique Morones, the founder of Border Angels, say dozens of people will meet in San Diego Sat 10:!5 a.m. Saturday. They expect to pack 15 to 20 vehicles with much-needed supplies and bring them to Tijuana.  Morones calls it the ‘Caravan of Love.’Morones says atlas 30 groups will be represented when they make the delivery, which consists of non-perishable food, sleeping bags, toiletries, and more.“Just imagine if your house was on fire and you have to run out, and you have to live in the street, what would you need? It’s those same types of things because these people are escaping a very difficult situation in their home country… so they had to flee, they didn't have a lot of time to take things with them,” Morons said.Morones says doctors from UCLA and UCI will also be joining their Caravan of Love to give health exams to the migrants and families.“We wanna treat these people with kindness and love,” he said. 1172

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Over the next three days, City of San Diego crews will remove hundreds of palm trees from the Rueda Canyon in Tierrasanta by helicopter.The city is working with the San Diego Canyonlands nonprofit and the San Diego River Conservancy throughout the process, which is expected to last through Friday.Hikers and joggers are warned not to enter the canyon while the tree removal is underway.“It’s extremely dangerous for anyone to be in there, it’ll actually stop the operations,” said Eric Bowlby, Executive Director of San Diego Canyonlands.The palm trees are not native to this region. Bowlby added they aggressively establish themselves and grow along the narrow stream at the bottom of canyons. The trees absorb so much water, they hinder the growth of all the native plants in the area.Because these palm trees grow so quickly, they’re also very hard to maintain. Dead fronds often create a skirt around the trees that’s not only a fire hazard but also becomes an area for pests, like rats, to live and breed.“We’re going to be removing some 300 mature Mexican Fan and Canary Island Palm Trees from Rueda Canyon,” said Bowlby. “That would be about 90,000 pounds of fuel that would otherwise remain in the canyon and in the event of a fire add a tremendous amount of danger and fuel to the community.”Once the trees are removed, they will be replace with trees native to our region, like Willows and Coast Live Oaks.The project was funded with money from a state grant. 1498

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nine drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol during a downtown San Diego checkpoint Friday night.The checkpoint was set up on the 1400 block of G Street between 11 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday.Throughout the course of the night, police checked more than 1,100 vehicles. Nine people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Another individual was arrested on other criminal charges, police said.“A major component of these checkpoints are the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive drunk or drugged impaired, bringing about more awareness and encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers,” police said in a news release. 711
