While many Americans do it, taking a selfie with a completed ballot is considered a crime in many states. For much of American history, ballots were intended to be secret. But as social media usage has exploded, more and more Americans are taking pictures with their ballots, and or at polling places. Most of these photos are harmless, but that doesn’t mean they’re fully legal in some states. In response, seveal states have changed their laws regarding ballot selfies.According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon and Utah have made changes to their laws in the last five years which allow some form of ballot selfies.Other states, however, have tried to curtail ballot selfies. For instance, Alabama passed a law last year that prohibits taking a photograph of a ballot, or otherwise revealing the contents of a completed ballot.Another state, New Hampshire, attempted to pass a law to restrict ballot selfies. However, a federal appeals court ruled 3-0 that the state had not shown that it was using the least restrictive means to achieve a compelling state interest of prohibiting voting fraud. According to the ruling, New Hampshire Secretary of State William Gardner was unable to show examples of how ballot photography led to voting fraud."The restriction affects voters who are engaged in core political speech, an area highly protected by the First Amendment," the ruling states. "There is an increased use of social media and ballot selfies in particular in service of political speech by voters. A ban on ballot selfies would suppress a large swath of political speech."Indiana also had a law passed in 2015 that would have made ballot selfies a felony struck down by a federal judge. In Colorado, the state made it legal in 2017 to take ballot pictures.Nationally, laws vary from state to state. While some states may permit photography of a completed mail-in ballot, the state might prohibit photography at a voting site.CNN has compiled a state-by-state list of what is permitted and not permitted in each state. 2104

When exploring mortgage options, it’s likely you’ll hear about Federal Housing Administration and conventional loans. Let’s see, FHA loans are for first-time home buyers and conventional mortgages are for more established buyers — is that it?Not necessarily.Actually, the differences between FHA loans and conventional mortgages have narrowed in the past few years. Since 1934, loans guaranteed by the FHAn have been a go-to option for first-time home buyers because they feature low down payments and relaxed credit requirements. But conventional loans — which are not insured by a government agency like the FHA, the Department of Veterans Affairs or the U.S. Department of Agriculture — have gotten more competitive lately. Both types of loans have their advantages. Here are the factors to consider when deciding between an FHA and a conventional mortgage. 886

With a second surge in COVID-19 cases underway, a family from the Midwest is sharing their harrowing story about surviving the coronavirus illness.A father, mother and son were all on ventilators, on life-support at one point.Chuck Drungelo was the first to feel sick right after Easter. He stayed home from work but his family, including his 81-year-old mother-in-law, all eventually landed in the hospital with the virus.“They said it looks like you have COVID pneumonia, so by Monday I was in the hospital and I gave it to my whole family,” said the dad.“How could this happen? How could all four members of their family get this? And it just shows you how contagious it is,” said Raeann Shedd, Drungelo’s sister.Chuck got the sickest. The ventilator wasn't enough. He was moved to an ECMO machine, which is life-support for the lungs and heart, for 19 days. He eventually got virus antibody plasma treatment that helped him turn a corner.“You can still hear my trachea. I got a hole from the feeding tube,” said Drungelo.Drungelo’s sister and his sister-in-law ended up having to make all the medical decisions while they were incapacitated. He was finally able to come home from a rehabilitation facility July 1.“It’s awful because your family is struggling, and you can’t be there for them. You can’t go to the hospital. You can’t hold their hand and talk to the doctor and look them in the eye. People think it’s their right to not wear a mask. I guess in a way it is, but we should do everything we can to save each other,” said Shedd.“My wife said the other day, if you don’t like wearing a mask, you’re not going to like wearing a ventilator,” said DrungeloAs you can imagine the family is facing a massive amount of medical bills. They have a GoFundMe page for those who would like to help. 1809

When I told friends that my wife and I were heading to Johannesburg -- which had just been hit by torrential rain and flooding — for a family wedding over Easter, they joked about how lucky we were to be able to take deep baths and long showers.Like many Capetonians, we've endured months of quick 90-second showers, bucket washes or baths that are only centimeters deep and grey water to flush the toilet or water our parched garden. 447

WILMINGTON, Del. – In a prime-time speech after the Electoral College vote, President-elect Joe Biden is set to declare that “not even ... an abuse of power” can stop a peaceful transition of power in the U.S. after last month’s election. That’s an overt swipe at President Donald Trump’s refusal to accept defeat and the top Republicans who have continued to stand by him.Biden is set to speak in Wilmington at about 7:30 p.m. ET Monday after the Electoral College formally votes to declare him president.According to excerpts released ahead of time by his campaign, Biden plans to call for unity and again express his intentions to be a president for everyone, regardless of whether they voted for him.“As I said through this campaign, I will be a president for all Americans,” Biden will say. “I will work just as hard for those of you who didn’t vote for me, as I will for those who did.But he also will say that “In America, politicians don’t take power — the people grant it to them.”“The flame of democracy was lit in this nation a long time ago,” Biden is set to say. “And we now know that nothing — not even a pandemic —or an abuse of power — can extinguish that flame.”As electors gathered in all 50 states and the District of Columbia on Monday to formally vote for the next president, the U.S. reached two major milestones in the COVID-19 pandemic. The nation’s death toll from the coronavirus surpassed 300,000 people and the first doses of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine were administered to health care workers in several states.During his remarks, Biden is also expected to touch on the state of the pandemic and what he’ll do to help get the country through it.“There is urgent work in front of all of us. Getting the pandemic under control to getting the nation vaccinated against this virus. Delivering immediate economic help so badly needed by so many Americans who are hurting today — and then building our economy back better than ever,” Biden is set to say. 1983
