On Tuesday, the Justice Department awarded more than million in grants to nonprofits who help survivors of human trafficking.Attorney General William Barr, Ivanka Trump, an adviser to President Donald Trump, and other officials announced that 73 organizations in 34 states will receive the grants, which will be provided by the Office for Victims of Crime, which is a component within the Justice Department's Office of Justice Programs.“Human trafficking is a barbaric criminal enterprise that subjects its victims to unspeakable cruelty and deprives them of the most basic of human needs, none more essential than a safe place to live,” Attorney General Barr said in the statement. “Throughout this Administration, the Department of Justice has fought aggressively to bring human traffickers to justice and to deliver critical aid to trafficking survivors. These new resources, announced today, expand on our efforts to offer those who have suffered the shelter and support they need to begin a new and better life.”Victims who receive the grants will be able to use the funds to receive counseling, find transitional or short-term housing assistance, as well as permanent housing, employment, and job training.“In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, combating human trafficking in the U.S. and abroad is critical work. DOJ’s grant recipients are on the frontlines of this fight, ensuring that survivors across our country are afforded safe and stable housing and empowered with the support and resources they need to rebuild their lives,” said Ivanka Trump in the statement. “I am incredibly honored to join Attorney General Barr to highlight these organizations and their tireless and vital work.”To see a complete list of who will receive the grants, click here. 1779

OCEANSIDE, Calif., (KGTV) -- The coronavirus outbreak has forced health officials to ban large gatherings, including farmers markets. Because of that, some local farmers are not able to sell their produce. But some farmers are determined to make sure their customers continue to get fresh produce, even if it's not readily available.Having fresh produce lately seems like a luxury. With panicked consumers in apocalypse mode, grocery shelves are looking dismal. Some won't even leave their homes. With farmers markets now shut down, local small farmers don't have a place to sell. RELATED: Grocery stores with hours for seniors amid coronavirus pandemic"What am I going to do with all of this fruit?" farmer Donal Yasukochi asked. Since 1929, Oceanside's Yasukochi Family Farms has survived many droughts, recessions, and even WWII Japanese Internment. Now, third-generation owner Yasukochi is determined to get through the coronavirus outbreak. "It is real. It's very difficult," Yasukochi said. RELATED: Feeding San Diego adding more pickup locationsEnter CSA: Community Supported Agriculture Boxes. These boxes include an assortment of fruits and vegetables from many local farms. Most of the items in the box were picked and packed the morning of delivery."I don't think you can get any fresher produce than this," Yasukochi said proudly. Before the coronavirus, Yasukochi farms went from delivering about 250 CSA boxes a week, only to North County customers. Since they started accepting orders to the entire San Diego County last weekend, they now have to cap the number of requests to 500 per day. RELATED: Districts providing free meals amid COVID-19 closures"It's been crazy," Yasukochi said. "Our phone doesn't stop ringing off the hook, and we're pushing orders into next week."All 15 of their employees are now delivering feverishly across the county, rain or shine. Yasukochi Family Farms is proving that sometimes, you have to think "inside the box" to make it through tough times. For more information on CSA boxes, click HERE. They offer two CSA Box sizes: regular () and jumbo (), and delivery to anywhere in San Diego County is an additional flat fee. 2185

Notre Dame became the second college this week to cancel in-person classes and move online because of a spike in coronavirus cases on campus.During an address to students Tuesday, Notre Dame President Rev. John Jenkins said the spike was likely from off-campus gatherings in the last week, according to the school’s contact tracing efforts.Every student at Notre Dame, roughly 12,000, was tested before they returned to campus to start class on August 10, and there were just 33 students who tested positive according to the school.Just a week later, on Monday, of 927 students who were tested, 147 were positive for the coronavirus.“For at least the next two weeks we will move undergraduate classes to remote instruction, close public spaces on campus, and restrict resident halls to residents only,” Rev. Jenkins told students.Students living off-campus are urged to remain there and only allow roommates into their dwelling.Rev. Jenkins also said student gatherings will be limited to only ten people. The previous limit when school started last week was 20 people.“If these steps are not successful, we will have to send students home,” Rev. Jenkins said. The University of North Carolina also announced this week they would be transitioning to remote learning following a spike in positive coronavirus tests on campus. The university reported 129 confirmed COVID-19 cases last week, and a jump in its positivity rate from 2.8% to 13.6%. The university said it has tested 954 students with 177 in isolation and 349 in quarantine. The university said that most of the infected students have mild symptoms. Also on Tuesday, Michigan State University pushed back their start date and announced they will be doing remote learning as well. In a statement posted by MSU's president, the school did not cite a specific spike in their area, but rather what they are seeing at other institutions as they return to campus. "It has become evident to me that, despite our best efforts and strong planning, it is unlikely we can prevent widespread transmission of COVID-19 between students if our undergraduates return to campus," the statement from President Samuel Stanley Jr., M.D., reads. MSU will now start remote learning on September 2. 2241

Online shoe retailer Zappos will allow customers to buy just one shoe, or a pair of shoes in different sizes. The change, being tested this week on their website, is aimed at amputees, those with different-sized feet, and others who may have felt excluded by the shoe industry. It’s part of Zappos Adaptive, an initiative started in 2017 to “connect people with products that makes getting dressed easier for everyone” according to the company. It includes products with easy-on features like zippers and velcro.Zappos was acquired by Amazon in 2009. 556
