SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - People looking to sell their home may be leaving thousands of dollars on the table by not renovating before listing, mainly because money is tight during the Coronavirus pandemic.Now, a San Diego-based company wants to help.Renovating Lives will pay for renovations up front to increase the value of a home before it sells."A lot of the people that we help are in horrible financial situations," says CEO Greg May. "They're they're they're stuck with being taken advantage of by vulture investors."May's company works with the homeowners on a renovation plan and then covers the costs.Homeowners pay the company back when the house sells, along with financing and administrative fees."There are 10s of thousands of properties out there that need work, that are deferred maintenance or just dated," says May. "If people had to sell them as is, they would be leaving 10s of thousands of dollars on the table."May says his company can typically increase a home's value by an average of 5,000.That's what happened with owner Bill Stutzer. After his wife passed away, he wanted to sell his 5-bedroom home as is, listing for around 0,000.But a smaller house across the street sold for nearly 5,000 after some renovations. Stutzer didn't know what to do with his home until he called Renovating Lives."I didn't want to do anything," he says. "I was just going to leave my house, as is, and try and sell it, and soon realized that wasn't going to I wasn't going to cut it... It turns out that if you put a little bit upfront and and get some things done it, it magnifies the bottom line."May's company helped Stutzer redo his home from the inside out, with new flooring, paint, doors, lighting and more. "I will help you fix up that house and put the cash in your pocket."May says this is especially important now, as people may decide to save money during the pandemic by not renovating before selling. He says its best to take advantage of the housing market while it's still high."Don't wait until it's too late, until they burn through their nest egg, and they're in foreclosure and their credit's being hurt," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Postal workers across San Diego will have an extra pickup this Saturday - they're working to end hunger in San Diego. The San Diego Food Bank and the National Association of Letter Carriers are asking San Diegans to participate in the annual Stamp Out Hunger event by setting out bags of nonperishable food items next to their mailboxes. The letter carriers will pick up the donations on their route and deliver them to the Food Bank's warehouse. “After the holiday season, food donations drop dramatically, and this one-day food drive helps us restock our shelves ahead of the summer months when we see increased in demand from children on summer vacation who stop receiving free school meals and face hunger at home,” said San Diego Food Bank President & CEO, Jim Floros.Last year, 244,489 pounds of food was collected from homes in San Diego County alone for the San Diego Food Bank and our North County Food Bank chapter.The food was distributed through the Food Bank’s network of 400 nonprofit partner agenciesMost needed items:  1096

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- On January 1, it will be legal for businesses to sell pot in California. With that, the questions and concerns about what that means for drivers out on the roads.“I think we will see an increase in DUI marijuana’s,” said Officer John Perdue, a San Diego Police officer in the traffic division.Perdue is an expert at DUI and drug recognition. Since November 8, 2016, when California voters approved Prop. 64, or the adult use of marijuana act, he’s been hearing the same thing when he comes across drivers he suspects are driving high.“Their first reaction is one of two, either A. ‘I have a medical marijuana card’, or B. ‘marijuana is legal.’ And I have to remind them, so is alcohol, but you still can’t drive under the influence of it,” Perdue said.How exactly will police be able to tell if someone is driving high?One tool that officers will use to help is the Drager Drugtest 5000, a presumptive drug screening test that can detect seven types of drugs in a person’s system.Like an alcohol breathalyzer, Perdue said, “the person has every right to refuse this.” But unlike alcohol, it doesn’t have a percent limit.If the Drager reads positive, Perdue said, “it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re impaired or under the influence, it just says that chemical or drug is in their body.”  So to be arrested for DUI, it’s still up to the officer to decide if the driver shows impairment.But that can be tough. Look at the Drager as an extra tool that’s used along with field sobriety tests, what an officer smells, sees or finds in the car, to formulate that officer’s opinion of whether a driver is high.“The hardest thing will be, because there is no per se limit right now, the officers are really going to have to be aware of the signs and symptoms,” Perdue said. 1808

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are asking that additional victims come forward in a San Diego sexual assault case. According to police, Seth Roberts, 18, was arrested on December 5 for multiple sexual assaults around San Diego County that happened between early October and late November. Based on the circumstances of the cases, the San Diego Police Department Sex Crimes Unit is looking for additional victims or anyone with information. According to police, Roberts reportedly identified himself to young women and befriended them by telling them he’s from out-of-state before sexually assaulting them. According to public records, Roberts was previously arrested in Oklahoma for harboring a runaway child felon. Records also show that in April of 2018, a permanent protective order was issued against Roberts in Oklahoma. The order was filed on behalf of a 16-year-old who says Roberts inappropriately touched her even after she asked him to stop. The protective order goes on to say the victim's mother wanted criminal charges filed, but none are listed. He is currently being held on ,250,000 bail.
