SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- 33 San Diego County elementary schools were honored under the Distinguished Schools Program by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson Monday.The program, which returned this year after a three-year break, replaces the California Gold Ribbon Schools Program.Schools were eligible based on test scores, suspension rates and English learner progress.Among those listed: Veterans Elementary (Chula Vista Elementary District), Green Elementary (San Diego Unified School District), Garfield Elementary (San Diego Unified School District), Monterey Ridge Elementary (Poway Unified), Ocean View Hills (San Ysidro Elementary), and Solana Pacific Elementary.“These schools implement outstanding educational programs and practices that help California students realize their potential, and put them on the path to achieve their dreams,” Torlakson said.“Every day at these schools, teachers, administrators and classified employees, working with parents, apply their dedication, creativity, and talents toward providing a great education for all their students.”According to the California Department of Education website, California is using a multiple measures accountability system to identify eligible schools based on their performance and progress on the state indicators as specified on the California School Dashboard. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A couple who evacuated from the Woolsey Fire in Los Angeles says their Airbnb hosts kicked them out of their unit and cleaned out all their belongings, forcing them to live with relatives in San Diego.Ben and Jessica Wells said they rented out the Airbnb unit in July, paying in advance through May.The newlywed couple had been living there as they searched for a home to buy.It was a studio apartment located in West Hills, a community on the western edge of the San Fernando Valley, which backed up to where the Woolsey Fire was burning.“I could see the fire burning on the hill. I saw the smoke,” said Ben, who got an evacuation alert on his phone while at the gym.He went home to meet his wife, frantically packing up some important belongings.“We were not trying to check out of the place at all. Obviously things were a mess, clothes were everywhere. We were just trying to basically make sure we had everything we needed just in case everything burnt,” said Jessica.After they left, the Airbnb hosts contacted them to see if they could go inside the unit and turn off the lights. Ben said he agreed to let them in for that purpose.But once inside, owners Larry and Jeri Hannah said they were shocked by what they saw.“I don’t even know how they were living there,” said Larry. “We couldn’t believe the mess we saw.”In addition to the clothes scattered about, the Hannah’s say the grout on the tile floor in the bathroom had been stained black. They said the walls needed painting and some of the flooring needed to be replaced.“When It became obvious that we weren’t going to let them come back then we just decided we were going to clean it up because we didn’t want to leave it like that,” said Larry.In order to do that, they removed all of the Wells’ belongings and told them the rest of their reservation had been canceled.The Wells’ said they agreed to pay through the end of November if they could keep their stuff there. But when Ben arrived on November 17th he said he was surprised to see their belongings strewn across the property.Expensive recording equipment had been left outside, he said. Other belongings had been thrown in trash bags. Some appeared to be missing.“At that point I was in shock, just completely shaken,” said Ben.He grabbed what he could find, not knowing that more of their belongings had been stored in a shed on the property.“Their stuff is all still here,” said Larry.In a statement, a spokesperson with Airbnb wrote ““We are urgently investigating this incident to better understand what happened. There have been more than 400 million guest arrivals in Airbnb listings to date and negative incidents are extremely rare.”  2699

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two San Diego-based U.S. Navy SEALs have been charged in connection with the 2017 execution of a detainee in Iraq.SEAL officials told the Navy Times that Lt. Jacob "Jake" Portier faces an Article 32 hearing on suspicion of covering up a string of war crimes allegedly committed by Special Operations Chief Edward "Eddie" Gallagher.The Naval Criminal Investigative Service probe involves the death of a wounded Islamic State fighter near Mosul, Iraq in May 2017, the Navy Times reported.Prosecutors allege Gallagher stabbed and killed the wounded man, posed for a photograph next to the body and opted to complete his re-enlistment ceremony next to the corpse, bringing "discredit upon the armed forces."Gallagher is also accused of shooting two non-combatants in separate incidents near Mosul, the Navy Times reported.An MCAS Miramar spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment.Gallagher was arrested on Sept. 11 and is being detained at the Naval Consolidated Brig Miramar at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, under Rules for Court-Martial 305, the Navy Times reported.Portier, who is accused of dereliction of duty, was not present at the time of the alleged killing, the Navy Times reported. He was Gallagher's platoon leader during the deployment and told investigators he learned about the alleged war crimes only after he was told about them by a special operator first class."Naval Special Warfare does not comment on specifics of an ongoing investigation in order to preserve its integrity, however all credible allegations of criminal activity are taken extremely seriously and thoroughly investigated," Naval Special Warfare spokeswoman Cmdr. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Bankers Hill man returned home to a knife-wielding man in his kitchen, leading to a frantic dash out of the neighborhood."I heard my neighbor pull up. I'm a light sleeper. Within a couple minutes, I heard sirens coming from every direction," said Tom.Tom, who asked us not to identify him, says two Sundays ago before 1 a.m., surveillance cameras showed his neighbor parking in front of his home. In the video, the homeowner is seen walking to his front door. An outdoor light turns off, and suddenly, another light comes on. Tom says that's when his neighbor encountered a stranger in his kitchen."He came home and found the guy standing at his back door with a bottle of alcohol from his cabinet, and a knife from his butcher block. He backed off a bit and called police," said Tom.The intruder ran out the back. He is then seen making his way to the front of the home, across the street and right to Tom's front door."He tries to get into my house. It's locked so he takes off down the street," said Tom. Tom says a man fitting the same description has been spotted stealing bikes and casing homes in the area. As for the recent break-in, Tom says it's not clear how the man got in, but video of the motion-activated lights suggest he was in the home for nearly an hour."It's more than a violation. You start to lose your sense of security, and that's the worst part of it," said Tom.The intruder is described as a white male, between 20 and 30 years old, 5’6"-5’8", 155 lbs, with tattoos on both forearms. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 40-year-old man was assaulted and nearly kidnapped during a violent home invasion overnight in South Park.The victim and his girlfriend were asleep in their home when three armed suspects forced their way into the home at about 2:30 a.m., according to San Diego Police. The group demanded the victim's car keys, but he refused to give them the keys. The group struggled with the victim and assaulted him, before taking several electronics and attempting to kidnap the man, police say.The victim continued to resist and was able to escape the group and call police. The suspects then fled the scene.Police described the suspects as three Hispanic males, all wearing dark clothing, gloves, and partially covering their head and faces. They fled the scene in a dark-colored SUV-style vehicle.Anyone with information is asked to call SDPD at 619-531-2000. 880
