SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego is one of the most rent-burdened cities in the entire country, according to a new report by Freddie Mac. The report claims that America’s Finest City is the second most rent-burdened city in the nation. Miami took the top spot on the list, followed by San Diego, Los Angeles, New York and Orlando. The report also found that those who make minimum wage would have to work nearly 100 hours per week to be able to afford the median rent. To come up with the report, Freddie Mac looked at how other organizations measure affordability to assess the rent-burden issue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police officers babysat for a man who needed to go to the hospital Friday night but didn't have anyone to watch his two young daughters. According to the department, officers received a radio call from a young father living in the Alpha apartments. The man reportedly told authorities he was in need of hospital care. “Unfortunately, he had no family or friends to help watch the girls,” the department said.After the man was taken to the hospital, two officers stayed behind to watch the 2-year-old and 4-year-old before taking them to the hospital where they were reunited with their dad.“Dad was emotional and grateful for the support. If someone needs help, we'll be there to respond,” the department continued in the Facebook post.No emergency is too small for our officers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diegans are continuing to push to get through to the state agency that handles unemployment claims, as bills come due.The region's unemployment rate is now a record 15%, as 195,000 people lost their jobs in April. Meanwhile, the Employment Development Department continues to be inundated with people trying call. The agency plans to add 1,800 temporary full-time and hourly workers over the coming weeks to handle the influx."It would be so helpful if I could just reach out to someone," said Ashley Porter, of El Cajon, who can't get through to ask why she has not received unemployment. "It's been very stressful for me."Porter still has a job at a medical call center, but had to reduce her hours to take care of her six-year-old daughter, Adalynn, whose school closed. The EDD's website says people who take that step may be eligible for jobless benefits, but that it's on a case-by-case basis and involves a phone interview.Porter says she never got that phone call, but what did arrive was a letter that she is eligible for up to 8 per week. But when she goes online to claim benefits, she gets an error message that reads - benefits exceeded. Her calls and emails to EDD are going unanswered. "I just feel so low, I just feel like I've worked so long and I've worked so hard that I mean, now that this has happened, can I just get a little assistance?" said Porter, who says her employer has not allowed her position to work from home. A spokesperson for the EDD expressed empathy for Porter's situation, but declined to discuss specifics. The spokesperson said, however, that the benefits exceeded message probably means the claimant makes too much to get benefits.State law says workers with reduced hours are eligible for unemployment if 75% of their reduced earnings comes out to less than what their weekly unemployment check would be. Porter says she's now earning about 0 per week at her reduced hours. But 75% of 0 is 0. That's more than the 8 she would receive.Meanwhile, she says she's getting behind on bills. She added her ,700 rent is coming due, and she's working on a payment plan with her landlord. 2170

It also has a staggering number of veterans who don’t have a place to liveAnd, even more alarming is the number every year who take their own lives.As ABC 10News Anchor, Kimberly Hunt explains…a non-profit in San Diego lead by, and staffed by, veterans is looking to change that.There are an estimated 1,100 homeless vets on the streets of San Diego. Statistically they commit suicide at a rate of 1.5 times higher than the general population.Kyle Drake is president of Cammies and Canines Sanctuary… a veteran owned, faith bases non-profit helping veterans by providing, among other things transitional housing, structure, and therapy.On this sprawling ranch in Dulzura, they’re given an opportunity.But Cammies and Canines Sanctuary under the importance of companionship. It pairs each veteran with a rescue dog which has been schooled by their master trainers as a service animal.Kyle’s construction company builds tiny homes on the property for each vet to have a sense of place. Tony’s pest control company, Mosquito Joes trains interested veterans to work in the pest control industry, and everyone is given a sense of responsibility and respect. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Raw emotion filled a San Diego courtroom Tuesday as the friends and family members of those killed and injured in a crash faced the drunk driver responsible at her sentencing. Thirteen people flew in from San Francisco to speak during victim impact statements. The most powerful words came from Giao Pham's life partner, John Lawhead. Pham was killed in the March 23rd crash."We were together for eleven years, until your actions that night took my partner, my world, my everything. You still don't have any remorse in your heart, you're a very shallow, person aren't you!?" At one point, the defendant, Alondra Marquez, interrupted, saying "You don't know me," Lawhead shouted back, " I don't care to know you, the only reason I know you is because you murdered my partner!" Marquez, 22, rear-ended a Lyft car on Highway 163 in Balboa Park, killing Pham and leaving his friend, Andy Lynn with a traumatic brain injury. Prosecutors said Marquez had a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit and was driving more than 100 miles an hour. In a bizarre coincidence, Marquez and the two victims were at the same Hillcrest bar the night of the crash. While Pham and Lynn chose to hire a Lyft, Marquez chose to drive, even though several people offered to give her a ride. "You had five chances not to drive your car, you chose to drive, at your fastest speed of 109 miles an hour, but that wasn't fast enough or good enough for you," shouted Lawhead Pham and Lynn were visiting from San Francisco for a wedding. The impact sent the car flying into a ravine. The Lyft driver suffered minor injuries. " The last place that I seen him go in the ground is where I find comfort, this is what I see when I go to see him now, do you understand your actions now?!" Marquez showed no emotion and read from a prepared statement. She said she doesn't remember anything about the night. "Physically, it's my fault, but spiritually and emotionally, I don't know where I was, but I wasn't there," she said from behind the glass. Lawhead told her she is the first person he truly hates. " I never thought I could truly hate someone. I hate your heart. I hate your soul. I hate your being, your spirit, I hate all of you." Marquez said she isn't a bad person. " Just know that I am not a bad or evil girl, my brain is processing this. It's a hard pill to swallow." Marquez asked for forgiveness. "I'm real sorry. I can't do nothing about it, but I'm locked up if that makes you guys feel better."She pleaded guilty and faces a maximum sentence of 13 years, four months in prison when the judge announces her sentence next week. 2794
