A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found combined cases of syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia reached an all-time high in the United States in 2018.In Humboldt County, California, health officials say sexually transmitted diseases have been on the rise for five years in a row. “We went from 434 chlamydia cases in 2014 to 790 in 2018,” said Hava Phillips of Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services. “But last year, we saw sharper spike in HIV and syphilis.”We’re learning Humboldt County’s STD statistics mirror national numbers. According to the CDC, from 2017 to 2018, gonorrhea cases increased 5 percent to more than 580,000 cases.During the same time, reported chlamydia cases increased 3 percent to more than 1.7 million cases – that’s the most ever reported to CDC.And perhaps the most concerning number: syphilis cases among newborns increased 40 percent to more than 1,300 cases.“No one has boyfriends and girlfriends anymore; it’s like major hook up culture,” one Humboldt County man said. “That could be one reason why we are having higher STDs now.” With the reasons ranging from more people getting tested to fewer people using condoms, cuts to public health services and online dating are thought to be a big factors as well.“We are seeing changes cultural attitudes towards sex,” Phillips said. “We are seeing the availability of things like social networking applications that allow for meeting anonymous partners more easily.”To help slow down the spread of STDs, Humboldt County Health is spreading their message both online and in person with coasters warning people about the increase in STDs. “The idea was to make sure that people were aware that we were seeing an increase in syphilis cases and they can protect themselves better,” Phillips said. SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — An Arizona woman is facing first degree murder charges after she admitted to murdering her mother Monday afternoon.According to Sgt. Ben Hoster, dispatchers received a call around 2 p.m. from someone at an apartment complex near 64th Street and Osborn Road saying their neighbor asked them to call 911.Scottsdale police say Holly Brennan, 46, later told the dispatcher that she had killed her mother, Sharon Simmons. Officers responded and found Simmons deceased in a bed.Brennan told police she suffocated her mother. Investigators did not immediately know when Simmons had died.Mike Bennett said he saw Brennan confess to police outside her apartment. "She admitted that she smothered her mother with a pillow," said Bennett. "Responding officers then went inside the apartment and located an elderly female deceased on the bed," said Sgt. Hoster. "Then they put the cuffs on her and sat her down on the sidewalk," said Bennett. "I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It took a couple seconds for it to sink in, and I'm like, 'Wow she just admitted that!'" 1093

Some residents in 34 counties in California will lose electricity overnight Tuesday into Wednesday in hopes to reduce the risk of the spread of wildfires, PG&E announced on Tuesday. The power outages could last several days, PG&E said. This is due to high winds that are expected in parts of California on Wednesday and Thursday. Isolated areas could have winds of 60 to 70 MPH. Gusty winds coupled with dry conditions mean conditions will be favorable for wildfires. Power company officials say that the outages will begin in the northern sections of the state, and trickle down into central and coastal sections of California. “The safety of our customers and the communities we serve is our most important responsibility, which is why PG&E has decided to turn power off to customers during this widespread, severe wind event. We understand the effects this event will have on our customers and appreciate the public’s patience as we do what is necessary to keep our communities safe and reduce the risk of wildfire,” said Michael Lewis, PG&E’s senior vice president of Electric Operations.Dozens of community centers will open during daylight hours while power is out.
