KANSAS CITY, Mo. — According to the FBI, sovereign citizens live in the United States but don't identify as part of the country. He refused to pull over for police, who were attempting to arrest him for outstanding warrants, and refused to get out of his car after pulling over near his home.Police eventually broke windows on the car and pulled Fletcher out."I have represented a few over the years," criminal defense attorney John Picerno said. "Their No. 1 belief is that they are not subject to the control of United States laws, and that's simply not true."For people who hold such beliefs, interactions with police can be confrontational."You add into the mix someone who doesn't believe law enforcement officers have legal authority to apprehend, It's extremely difficult and ... that's why you see situations where you see officers using the force that they use to get that person out of the vehicle," Picerno said.Dr. John Hamilton — a retired Kansas City, Missouri, police officer and criminal justice professor at Park University — said officers need to be familiar with the group or things can turn ugly."You don't know what you are dealing with either." Hamilton said. "You don't know if someone who really is well-versed on all the laws that they read, the federal laws, that say they are empowered to do that. Then, some don't know those kind of things, but just decide that is sounds like something interesting to do."It's also difficult for attorneys who represent "sovereign citizens.""It's harmful for them, because they say those things in open court, they are seen as being in defiance of our laws and of our government," Picerno said. "Naturally, prosecutors and judges don't take very kindly to that kind of attitude."Hamilton has advice to anyone who thinks they are above the law and are part of the movement."I would tell them the same thing I would tell anybody, which is to cooperate — to make sure you show your hands, to do what the officer tells you to do as long as it lawful, and appropriate," he said. "If you have problems, you can settle it at a later time."Many police departments are working to address how to deal with such individuals. The KCPD trains recruits at the academy how to identify someone who is a sovereign citizen and also has an investigative unit that deals with incidents involving the movement. 2826

Jeff Marquise is taking small steps in distance, but he's making huge strides for science.Eight years ago, Marquise was paralyzed from a mountain biking accident.“It was a gap jump and I sort of just rolled over it and went over the handlebars on the other side of the jump and came down right on my head,” he recalls. “I sustained a C5 and C6 burst fracture.” Those injuries left Marquise unable to walk. Now, with the help of new technology and old-school physical training, he is leaving his wheelchair and walking again. “No one thought I could stand up on my own or step on my own,” he says. “So, being able to do it with the implant has brought some hope back to the equation.” The implant is an epidural stimulator that’s embedded near the spinal cord. Electricity then triggers the nervous system which can help restore brain-to-spine connectivity. Researchers at the Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center at the University of Louisville are calling this a scientific breakthrough.“It gives us hope that we know now that the spinal cord has this capability,” says Claudia Angeli, Ph.D., of the University of Louisville. “So, it’s a matter of being able to tap into that.”While Angeli is not calling this a quick fix for paralysis, she is finding excellent results.“You can actually see that activation of the muscles,” she says. “It’s the spinal cord responding to information. So, the more activity the more responsive or the more excitable the spinal cord is.”That excitement can be felt across the country.A recent study by the Christopher and Dana Reeve foundation discovered that there are nearly 1 in 50 people living with paralysis in the United States.That breaks down to about 5.4 million people, or the combined populations of Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Washington, DC.“It is life changing,” Marquise says. “But I’m always careful not to oversell it. It’s not walking around the house doing chores.”While being brutally honest, Marquise says he’s also very happy to get back on his feet again. “When you first get hurt, a lot of people are told that they are not going to be able to walk again,” he says. “So, being able to do it in this setting has brought a ray a hope for me and other people.” 2235

It’s been nearly four decades since a Northern Ireland-based start-up car company put a futuristic take on the sports car. With its low profile, sleek, stainless steel body and unmistakable gull-wing doors, DeLorean’s DMC-12 remains one of the most recognizable cars on the planet. “You're going down the road and people are just hanging out their windows taking pictures and videotaping,” explains DMC-12 owner Robert Keslar.Keslar bought his second DeLorean with severe engine damage eight years ago.“There was some fiberglass damage from the fire that occurred,” he said. “So, I did all that myself and then I brought it up here to the shop and they finished it up for me and got it back on the road.”Only one model, in one color, was ever released before the company shutdown production in 1982. Its founder John DeLorean was in legal hot water and the original company was left insolvent.“It was a perfect storm,” said current DeLorean Motor Company Vice President James Espey. “A bad economy, high interest rates and a bad exchange rate on the pound to the dollar.”With just over 9,000 produced, an estimated 6500 remain on the road today.But it was 1985’s "Back to the Future" that electrified audiences, cementing the DeLorean’s place in American pop culture.In the film, an incredulous Marty McFly played by Michael J. Fox asks the question: “You built a time machine out of a DeLorean?”Doc Brown played by Christopher Lloyd responds with this: “The way I look at it, if you’re going to build a time machine you ought to do it with some style.”It’s that style and original design that’s been frozen in time. DMC is now headquartered just outside of Houston in Humble, Texas. They specialize in the service and restoration of DeLorean cars. They even hope to one day produce new ones.“When the Delorean factory closed in late ‘82, all the remaining parts got shipped here to the United States,” according to Espey.Their warehouse, now a time-capsule, is lined with original parts manufactured nearly 40 years ago. “About three and a half million altogether,” says Espey. “Nuts Bolts Washers glass interior trim switches stainless steel panels pretty much everything to make a car.”That’s enough parts, potentially to build another 500 cars. But DMC says new production is on hold for now. They are waiting for final federal regulations for a law passed in 2015 that would allow them to produce a low volume of vintage cars that would be exempt from today’s emission standards. “In a perfect world that would lead to an all new DeLorean at some point in the future," says Espey.Fortunately, enthusiasts like Keslar don’t have to wait for the future. “The doors the finish the stainless steel there's just nothing else like it,” says Keslar with a smile. “It’s an absolute blast.”A blast from the past. 3024

John Sherer is the organist and director of music at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, Illinois. “Being a musician is a true calling, because through music you can touch people, you can heal people, you can connect to people in a much, much deeper way, than just through words,” he says. Sherer believes music has a way of binding people together. “Hearing a pipe organ connects you to the universe in a primal way, in a very profound way,” he says.People who walk into the church as he’s playing, say the impact is immediate.“I feel like it’s amazing and magnificent," says a child walking into the church. "I feel like God is right here and is right next to me."Sherer discovered his calling to be a musician early in life, and he’s a big reason why a very special organ in Chicago exists today.“This is the largest pipe organ in Chicago, with well over 8,000 pipes,” Sherer explains. “You’ve heard the phrase ‘pulling out all the stops’, well this is where it really comes from. You pull out all the stops, you’re going all the way, you’re going to get a big, big sound.” The creation of pipe organ took 10 years. Designed by John Michael Quimby, a consultant from New York, the instrument was completed in 2016.“It’s really like having a whole orchestra right under your fingertips," he says. "You’ve got English horn and French horn and flutes and strings and trumpets and trombones, and no two organs are alike.”It takes your entire body to play the instrument, and the intricate details are what make each organ one-of-a-kind. It also provides a full spectrum of sound. “Mozart himself said it was the king of instruments.”The organ is capable of the lowest frequencies any instrument can make, and the highest frequencies any human ear can hear.“The smaller the pipe, the higher the sound. That is the highest note in the organ, so that pipe’s about the sound of my little finger,” he says.To appreciate the instrumental wonder, you have to go inside.“The organ starts in the basement where the blower is located," Sherer says. "The air from the blower goes through massive tubes up to the pipes, and the pipes go all the way up to the ceiling. It’s like being in a tree house at this point, because you’re surrounded by so many different sections of the organ.”Sherer says the pipes are located in the front of the church, in the back of the church and on the sides of the church. The whole building becomes part of the instrument from basement to ceiling, front to back and side to side.The pipes in the back help create a surround sound so everyone can feel connected to the music. The finished product is a beautiful amalgamation of sight and sound.“When people walk into Fourth Presbyterian Church, their eyes make them go ‘ahhhh’ and when they hear the organ, their ears make them go ‘ooooh.’”Sherer explains it as an out-of-body experience as you’re aware of the whole space around you. “I hope that when people hear this organ, they feel comfort and healing, and that they are inspired and lifted up," he says. "And I hope that when they experience the sound of this organ, they realize that there’s something in the universe that’s larger than them.” 3184
