Arlina Allen is a life-recovery coach and podcaster. She’s been sober for 26 years. From her experience, she says the holiday season is often challenging for people recovering from addiction.“I would experience situations or triggers that I didn’t know how to handle," Allen said. "Like nobody plans to get triggered, but once you have an emotional response to a situation, if you are not prepared and you don’t have tools, it’s very difficult to choose wisely. Like my compulsive choice was to reach for a drink or a bong hit.”She says connecting with others who have shared similar trauma experiences is essential in the recovery process. That’s why she plans to attend a holiday fellowship marathon on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day offered for free by Lionrock Recovery.“For me personally, Lionrock is my revenge against addiction that took my sister and almost took one of my children,” said Lionrock Recovery Co-founder and CEO Peter Loeb.Father Peter Loeb and daughter Ashley Loeb Blassingame are co-founders of Lionrock. Ashley’s been sober for 15 years and she says she’s here to set an example of what sobriety can be.“Holidays are traditionally tough for anyone in recovery, not least because these occasions typically involve alcohol. "And the ones who are falling off are the ones who are passing away or the ones who are relapsing.”What fuels Arlina’s podcast is the power of people sharing their stories and opening their hearts.“When someone is vulnerable and speaks from their heart, that is a language that passes all boundaries," Allen said. "We get connected and suddenly we feel like we’re not alone or we’re not that different.”It’s a battle that’s so hard. Both Allen and Ashley Loeb Blassingame fully understand that battle. Around ten people are still missing after the blaze broke out on Sunday afternoon, when the mall was packed with shoppers and cinema goers. Ten others are in hospital, Vladimir Puchkov, the head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations told journalists Monday.Preliminary investigations point to the fire having broken out in the cinema hall area of the four-story Winter Cherry shopping mall in the center of Kemerovo.Early images from the scene showed thick black smoke pouring from the shopping center, a former sweet factory, as firefighters continued to battle the flames after dark.The shopping mall, which has an overall area of 23,000 square meters, opened in 2013. It has a parking lot for 250 cars, shops, a bowling, a children's center, a cinema, and a petting zoo, according to TASS.Earlier Petrenko said four people had been detained and questioned in relation to the fire according to Tass. An accused serial killer, known as the “Golden State Killer,” is expected to plead guilty Monday in person, in a university ballroom.Joseph James DeAngelo was arrested in April 2018 at his home near Sacramento, California. He is accused of heinous crimes, including rape and murder, in almost a dozen California counties in both Southern and Northern California during the 1970s to 80s.DeAngelo is expected to plead guilty at Monday’s hearing to 13 counts of murder, 13 counts of kidnapping and admit responsibility for another 60+ rapes and other crimes. As part of the plea deal announced earlier this month, DeAngelo would be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in August. Victims and victims' families are not expected to make comments on Monday. They will get a chance to make victim impact statements later this summer.Monday’s hearing will be held in the Sacramento State University Union Ballroom, a large room that can hold roughly 2,000 people for a reception, according the university’s website. Previous hearings in DeAngelo’s case have been packed with victims, victims’ families, media and other interested parties.The in-person hearing on Monday will include temperature checks and required face coverings, according to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.The crimes associated with the “Golden State Killer” were chronicled in the book “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark”, written by Michelle McNamara.
