SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Authorities are looking for an inmate who walked away from a San Diego rehabilitation facility.Steven Vargas, 53, was last seen at 10 a.m. Tuesday after leaving the San Diego's Male Community Reentry Program, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Vargas had been given permission to leave the facility but didn't return when required.The facility allows eligible offenders with one year left to serve to do so in re-entry centers, providing them with rehabilitation services that assist them with substance use disorders, mental health care, employment, education, housing, and more. Officials said they were alerted that Vargas' electronic monitoring device had been tampered with just before noon Tuesday.Vargas was sentenced to four years in prison on May 6, 2019 for vehicle theft with prior vehicle related theft convictions and grand theft of a firearm. He was scheduled to be released on parole in June.Vargas is described as a Hispanic male, 6-feet tall, and weighs about 192 pounds. He was last seen wearing faded black jeans, black shoes, a blue shirt, and a charcoal grey sweater. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Customs and Border Protection officials responded Monday to the arrival at San Diego’s U.S.-Mexico border of the first group of migrants from the caravan moving through Mexico.Some 85 people associated with the LGBTQ+ community are near the San Ysidro Port of Entry, according to journalist Jorge Nieto. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Approximately 900,000 San Diegans who pay for sewer services may have had their rights violated.It’s part of what being alleged in a massive new class action lawsuit against the City of San Diego, its Public Utilities Department and the San Diego City Council.The suit calls it an “illegal financing scheme”. Attorneys who brought the suit claim the issue surrounds the city’s million smart water meter system and how it was paid for.  The lawsuit alleges the city knowingly used about million from the city's sewer fund instead of the city's water fund to help pay for that meter system.Subsequently, hundreds of thousands of San Diego sewer ratepayers were allegedly misinformed about what their money was being used for. Attorneys argue sewer ratepayers were quite possibly paying for a system that they did not necessarily benefit from- the smart water meter system. It’s still unknown whether there were any rate hikes directly tied to this.The suit claims the situation was an unconstitutional grab of million in funds.The San Diego City Attorney’s Office is reviewing the complaint and will respond through the court. 1183

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Bernie Sanders is showing his support for dozens of hotel workers on strike over their pay and benefits. The former presidential candidate stood alongside protestors at The Westin Hotel on Friday. “Nobody wants to do this. We would all like to work right now,” says employee Arturo Ramirez.Ramirez has been working at The Westin Hotel since February. With the high cost of living in San Diego, Ramirez says its sometimes hard to pay the bills.“My mother and I, we work at the same hotel. We’re struggling to pay ,100 in rent," Ramirez says.Bernie Sanders took the stage to show his support to workers during his visit to San Diego.“We’re saying to Marriott who owns Westin, we’re saying to every corporation in this country who make billions of dollars in profit, pay your workers a living wage," Sanders said to a crowd of protesters.Employees are asking for a raise of at least an hour and a chance to save for their retirement.“It’s a billion dollar company that needs to pay the workers a living wage so they can live in the city of San Diego," says Bridgett Browning, President of Unite Here Union. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the temperature rises and more businesses, like movie theaters, are reopening San Diegans and people from neighboring counties are flocking to get a dose of normalcy."We sold out today which is great news for everyone, we sold out today very quickly." General Manager of Theater Box Donnie Eversole said.He said it was wonderful 'being home' back in the theater, "we haven't been in the theater for 90 to 120 days so it's like a new adventure."He said it helps that the week they opened, two blockbusters, Christopher Nolan's Tenet and Bill and Ted Face the Music, are screening.While they're capped at 25% Eversole said you can make sure you claim your seat by reserving online. They are working to add more showtimes while abiding by the new guidelines.Last time San Diego had sweeping reopenings, there was a huge spike in coronavirus cases. Eversole said they are doing everything they cna to prevent another spike, "every cdc guideline is followed to the letter, we do not bend, we do not break. We follow the rules because not only is our business affected, everyone else is and we want to make sure everyone is getting a fair shake and able to recoup some of the summer that's been lost."San Diego is the only lower tier county in Southern California with the ability to have so many re-openings, drawing attention from our neighbors.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher spoke at Wednesday's press conference, urging everyone to do their part to prevent another spike, "One of the most dangerous settings is indoor gatherings, it is house parties, it is people gathering together in an indoor setting and there really is no way for us to enforce that or prevent that other than the public's help and cooperation."He said if there are gatherings and another spike in cases, businesses, like Theater Box, could shut down once again. 1857
