BEACH LAKE, Pa. – It may look like a regular house from the outside, but inside Meghan Buselli’s bustling home, one room looks just like a regular classroom.“I have Landon who's eight, Sawyer who's six and Levi who's five and then I have two little girls that I fit in there somehow,” said the mom of five, who has a college degree in elementary education.It’s a degree she initially thought she would use by going back to teach in the classroom. However, when the time came for her oldest child to go to school, she had second thoughts.“The age of five came super fast, quicker than I thought,” she said, “and I wasn't ready to let go of our time.”So, she decided to home-school her children instead. It’s a decision that – at the time – she had no idea would end up attracting attention from around the country.“I think parents thought that, you know, we need to think of different options for our children,” Buselli said.That is how, through social media, she ended up in the role of home-schooling helper to parents looking to do the same, in the wake of COVID-19.“They say, ‘Oh, well, I don't have a degree in that,’ and I say, ‘You know what? Think of your grandmother's favorite recipe that you use year after year. Did she go to culinary school? (KGTV) -- Deputies are investigating after gunshots rang out in Bonita overnight Sunday, leading to the detainment of 10 people.Authorities were called to the 5400 block of Robinwood Road after receiving reports of gunshots around 3:55 a.m. Sunday.After finding shell casings, nine residents were taken into custody. While checking the area, deputies heard 10 more shots being fired before a man, later identified as Salvador Barajas, 25, ran from the area.Following a brief search, Salvador was found by a K9 and taken into custody. Barajas was taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation before being booked into jail for negligent discharge of a firearm. 693

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- A Brooklyn karaoke bar with over 280 people inside was shut down over COVID-19 violations early Sunday, according to the New York City Sheriff's Office.Authorities shut down Legend KTV karaoke bar in Borough Park around 2 a.m.About 281 people were inside the location, which exceeded Department of Building occupancy and had a vacate order from 2018, the NYC sheriff said.The location’s liquor license was also revoked in 2019.The venue had windowless, private party rooms with 25 to 30 people inside, according to a law enforcement source.Inside one of the rooms was a young child who was running back and forth between tables, according to the source.While 281 people were inside, authorities believe there were likely more people as about 40 dispersed when the sheriff’s office arrived, the source said.At least six people were arrested for offenses, including child endangerment, authorities said.This story was originally published by Cristian Benavides and Kristine Garcia at WPIX. 1013

BOSTON, Mass. – A statue of Christopher Columbus was beheaded in Boston.A WHDH photographer discovered the vandalism at Christopher Columbus Park on Atlantic Avenue shortly after midnight on Wednesday.WHDH reports that the same statue was vandalized with red paint and the phrase “Black Lives Matter” in 2015. And in 2006, the head was broken off and went missing for six days before it was put back on, WHDH says.The city’s mayor, Marty Walsh, told WBZ-TV that the statue will be put in storage and there will be conversations about the “historic meaning” of the incident and whether it will ever go back up.This Massachusetts statue is one of many that have been vandalized, taken down or destroyed amid the ongoing protests over racial justice following the death of George Floyd.Another statue of Christopher Columbus in Richmond, Virginia, was torn down by protesters, set on fire and then thrown into a lake on Tuesday night, WTVR reports.In other states, there’s a renewed movement to remove confederate statues and monuments, which some say glorify the Civil War-era South. Beginning in the fall of 2023, all California State University students will be required to take a three-unit ethnic studies or social justice course to graduate.“Automatic yes,” said Jose Juan Rodriguez Gutierrez Hernandez Estrada, a wildlife biology major at Humboldt State University. “I’m glad that’s something that’s going to be required.”In addition to his studies, Rodriguez also makes music about social issues and also plays on the HSU men's rugby team.For the student-athlete, this change in curriculum shows a commitment to much needed change.“I feel like making ethnic studies would go a long way, not just for students of color but for our society in general,” he said.University leaders say these courses will have their own section in the general education curriculum, as social science requirements have been lowered from nine to six units.“We feel that it really is time to make this change,” said Alison Wrynn, Ph.D., CSU associate vice chancellor.Wrynn says this decision is the first major change to the CSU system’s general education requirements in 40 years.“Whether you’re an engineer or a nurse, it’s important for you to understand the communities you’re working with as you make those professional discipline-based decisions,” she said.Some college leaders, however, say this change is not nearly enough“We are absolutely opposed to it,” said Charles Toombs, Ph.D., a professor of Africana Studies at San Diego State University.Toombs is also president of the California Faculty Association, the union that represents the 29,000 faculty members in the CSU system and a group he says was not included enough in the decision making.“The BOT (Board of Trustees) did not listen to our voices,” he said. “CSU’s proposal is diluting what ethnic studies is; it’s trying to include everything in ethnic studies.”Toombs and other representatives from the CFA are pushing for Assembly Bill 1460 – which would require students to take a class focusing on one of four ethnic groups: African Americans, Latin X, Asian Americans and indigenous groups.“It will actually give students essential knowledge that they need in the 21st century,” Toombs said.As the bill sits on the California governor’s desk, Rodriguez believes these new requirements are a good start for future change.“I feel like these lessons we can take with us and teach to our children, teach to the next generations,” he said. 2415
