(KGTV) - Wait times at Southern California Department of Motor Vehicles offices have some drivers traveling hundreds of miles to avoid long lines.The DMV in the high desert town of Needles has some of the shortest lines in the state, KABC reported. When a news crew arrived at 10:30 a.m. Monday, there were only two people waiting in line."It's really nice. Not like back at home in L.A. County," one customer said to KABC.RELATED: New system and REAL ID to blame for long DMV linesAlthough the DMV's long lines are infamous, the situation worsened when the DMV started processing information for California’s REAL ID. The modified license will be required for travel in some states and access to secure federal facilities after October 1, 2020.A spokesperson for the DMV said the agency is monitoring wait times at all 172 field offices across the state."Generally speaking, the busiest offices tend to be the ones located in major metropolitan areas," spokesperson Jaime Garza said to KABC. "Offices in the rural areas tend to be less crowded."RELATED: California DMV now taking applications for REAL IDTo improve the wait times in San Diego, the DMV recently extended hours at several local offices and added Saturday hours. There are also self-service kiosks to speed up the process.A recent check of wait times at the Hillcrest DMV showed customers with appointments waiting 15 minutes for services. Those without appointments had a wait of two hours and 20 minutes. San Ysidro, Poway, San Marcos and Chula Vista had the longest wait times. (KGTV) - Uber is expanding its role as a common ride-sharing platform into the healthcare sector in its release of "Uber Health," the company announced Thursday.Uber Health partners with healthcare organizations and is designed to provide rides for patients, caregivers, and staff. The primary aim is to serve patients, though, as access is available without a smartphone."Riders don’t need the Uber app, or even a smartphone, to get a ride with Uber Health because it’s all done through text message. We’re even going to be introducing the option for riders to receive a call with trip details to their mobile phone or landline instead," a release from the company said.Healthcare providers can schedule rides on clients' behalf, the passenger is contacted by text message with their trip details when the ride is booked and also when their driver arrives, and then the passenger is picked up and dropped off.If the passenger does not have a mobile phone, Uber said the healthcare company or caregiver can coordinate on their behalf.Uber said the service will hopefully cut down on the number of patients who miss doctor appointment due to transportation issues."Every year an estimated 3.6 million Americans miss their appointments due to a lack of reliable transportation. At Uber, we recognize that the path to health may not be easy, but we know the road to care can be," the company says.Organizations that partner with Uber Health will be given access to track billing, appointments, and schedule multiple follow-up appointments simultaneously.The company added their product will meet HIPAA standards.Uber plans to use drivers already in their established network to facilitate the service. 1736

A "miracle drug" aimed at helping offenders in Arizona jails and prisons beat an Opioid addiction is having limited success, roughly nine months after two separate programs launched.Both the Arizona Department of Corrections and Maricopa County Correctional?Health Services launched separate but similar Vivitrol programs in the summer of 2017.Vivitrol is an injectable form of Naltrexone and designed to block the brain's opioid receptors. Essentially, the monthly shot is designed to prevent an opioid user from getting high.However, experts warn counseling must come along with the medication. Eligible inmates receive a shot of Vivitrol before their release, with counseling and services set up to try and ensure success once back in the community. According to the Arizona Department of Corrections, 13 eligible inmates enrolled in the program since August, with just two making it to their third shot after leaving prison.In Maricopa County, nine eligible county inmates have opted for Vivitrol. Of those nine, county officials only know of three who continued seeking treatment after leaving jail. "I can say that I would have hoped for a better success rate," said Dr. Grant Phillips, the Medical Director for Maricopa County Correctional Health Services.  He also noted the number of people who become eligible for the treatment program is intentionally kept low, to ensure they are providing proper education and services, such as counseling, for when the inmate leaves jail. Essentially, it's a small sample size, but Vivitrol will continue as an option as a part of their larger substance abuse program. "The drug itself is effective when used in combination with counseling and strong social support," Phillips said. "Let's face it, someone leaving jail is lacking in a lot of those things."Phillips says while only nine patients have opted for Vivitrol, they have more than 100 methadone patients just in 2018. "There may be a lack of interest," Phillips said, noting inmates in the substance abuse program regularly discuss various treatment methods.  "Some will have had good experiences, some will not have good experiences, they'll talk about it and they'll kind of share these ideas."The goal is to help inmates better their lives while reducing the rate at which offenders wind up back behind bars. Vivitrol programs take many different shapes across the country. For example, in Madison County, Indiana, Vivitrol is sometimes tied to a condition of probation.The Chief Probation Officer there said roughly 55 percent of participants either successfully completed, or are still a part of, their Vivitrol program. They count that as a success. Perhaps it's too early to evaluate the programs here in Arizona. "The anecdotal success is a reason to be optimistic about it," Phillips said. "Offering choice of all the options that are out there and realizing that Vivitrol is going to work for some individuals, we want to make sure it is available to them." 3177
