Over the last year, about 106,000 San Diegans have lost their payroll jobs. San Diego's recovering job market is facing new headwinds from the latest round of coronavirus restrictions. The purple tier bans indoor dining and limits retail capacity to 25%. And on Saturday, the governor's curfew of 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. goes into effect. Social isolation and quarantines may be helping to reverse climate change."This isn't the right reason to be changing the environment," says Professor Ralph Keeling. "We should be doing it because we want to do it, not because we're forced to do it."Recent studies by the European Space Agency showed significantly less Nitrogen Dioxide in the air over Spain, France, and Italy during March of 2020, compared to March of 2019. All three of those countries are under heavy lockdowns because of the Coronavirus.Meanwhile, a report in the New York Times showed similar changes over New York City, Los Angeles, and Seattle.Keeling says it's good to see the short-term gains. But there's no way to know if this will lead to long term changes in the environment. He compares it to a bathtub. As Keeling describes it, the pollutants we put into the atmosphere are like the water flowing into the tub. "If you turn down the tap on a bathtub, and you look at the spigot, you can tell there's less water flowing in," he says. "But if you look at the level of a tub. You don't see immediately that the levels are rising more slowly."Meanwhile, the oceans may also see a benefit from the economic slowdown. Scripps Professor Jeremy Jackson says shipping will slow down, and fisheries that may rely on government subsidies will have to halt operations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Rising temperatures are increasing the wildfire danger in San Diego County. Monday morning's fires near Webster are the third group of fires sparked by homeless people in a matter of months. Neighbors in the area say they are getting nervous. Edna Wallis has been living in her home for three years. As the weather heats up, she says the brush behind her home becomes a safety hazard. "I start rinsing the patio when the days are extremely hot and dry," says Wallis. "We rinse it, but it's not much."Less than five minutes from her home, a fire sparked off Home Avenue early Monday morning. Among brush and a lot of trash, crews worked to put out the flames that started inside of a homeless encampment. "I'm nervous. I'm very nervous because I'm very close to this area," says Wallis. "All of the neighborhood is dry."There have been other fires in the area as well. A homeless camp caught fire near I-805 and I-15 last week. A blaze also sparked in the same area in March. This fire slightly backed up traffic as crews work to put the flames out that started inside of a tent.
