SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new study by the Wounded Warrior Project shows nearly 87% of injured veterans struggle with their weight once they return home.That's up from both 2015 & 2016.Programs in San Diego hope to reverse that trend, helping vets shed pounds and get their lives back."I had to be reminded that I could do it again," said Marlene Krpata.While serving as an Army Captain in Iraq in 2006, a mortar blast badly injured her leg. After three years trying to save it, she decided to have it amputated."The first couple months we’re laying in a bed and not moving at all," she said.Krpata battled PTSD and depression after the blast. She says prescription drugs also slowed her down. So did her diet. She kept eating like she was on active duty, without the active lifestyle is provides."I gained 130 pounds," said Krpata.Krpata got in touch with the Challenged Athletes Foundation, who helped her get a prosthetic leg. Then friends helped her get back into sports.Now, she plays soccer, softball, boxes and runs."I’m not a Paralympian by any sport," she said. "But I stepped on the field and I made it work. I felt a little embarrassed at first, but I’m glad I did it now because it allowed me to progress up to where I was. And it’s fun again."The Wounded Warrior Project also has a wide selection of Health and Wellness Programs. They're designed to teach injured vets about nutrition and exercise. They also help form support groups to deal with depression and anxiety over starting to work out again.In San Diego, there's also the Wounded Warrior Tennis Program. It holds free tennis clinics every Tuesday at Balboa Park for injured vets. It also runs a week-long camp once a year to help jump start veterans who may need extra help.For Krpata, it's been a life-saver. She's lost nearly 60 pounds. But more than that, she feels like herself again."I’m super confident now, enjoying my sports, enjoying myself again as a soldier and leaning down," said Krpata. 1996

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man was arrested in connection with the shooting death of a woman in a Mountain View apartment, San Diego police announced Thursday.SDPD officials said officers responded to reports of a shooting inside an apartment unit in the 4500 block of Imperial Avenue at around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.Officers arrived and found a woman, later identified as Emily Cortez, with a gunshot wound in her upper torso. She was located on an upstairs walkway of the apartment complex, SDPD officials said.According to police, a man was providing medical aid as officers and emergency medical crews arrived at the scene.Despite life-saving efforts, Cortez, 19, was declared dead at the scene.During their investigation, SDPD Homicide Unit detectives identified the suspected gunman as 18-year-old Jorge Manuel Sanchez and arrested him in connection with Cortez’s death.SDPD officials said Cortez and Sanchez lived in the apartment where the incident occurred, and the suspect and victim were in a relationship.No other information was released.Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to call the SDPD Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1188

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A San Diego fire captain convicted of domestic violence was sentenced Wednesday.Steven Michaels received three years probation, 52 weeks of counseling and 180 days of custody which will be served in a county parole and alternative custody program, according to City News Service.Michaels, a veteran fire captain with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, pleaded guilty in 2017 to shoving his girlfriend against a wall and refusing to let her use a phone to call for help, CNS reported.RELATED: Veteran San Diego fire captain pleads guilty to domestic violence chargeMichaels filed a request to have the felony charge reduced to a misdemeanor, but Judge Timothy Walsh denied the request citing a history of alcohol-related incidents of domestic violence.The felony conviction will likely cause Michaels to lose his job."He's taken away his career," said Walsh," if there is a career left. Four times!"When asked if Michaels was still employed by the department, Monica Munoz, a spokesperson for San Diego Fire-Rescue, only said, “we can’t give information about personnel issues.”10News has also requested comment from a spokesperson with SDFD's personnel department. Public records website, Transparent California, shows Michaels made 3,407 in 2016.The victim, Jane Doe, initially told investigators she feared for her safety, according to prosecutors. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A judge is expected to decide whether to release a sexually violent predator into the Jacumba Hot Springs area.Joseph Bocklett, a convicted repeat sex offender, had a placement hearing Monday morning. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, it was held virtually. ABC 10News wasn’t given permission to record it, but we did monitor what happened inside of the courtroom.The Department of State Hospitals wants to put the 75-year-old Bocklett in a home in Jacumba -- after a Judge denied a proposal to move him into a home in Pauma Valley.Bocklett was convicted of three sexual offenses over a 19-year period involving victims between the ages of 4 and 9, according to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office. He was last sentenced in 2000 to a 17-year prison term and later civilly committed to Coalinga State Hospital to undergo treatment.Though the public wasn’t allowed to physically be inside of he courtroom, they’ve been working to make sure their voices are heard, protesting this recommendation.They have got pages of signatures from residents in the East County. A few of them gathered near the courthouse holding signs expressing their concerns about the possibility of another sex offender being placed in their community.Among that group Melissa Woodall and her daughter. Woodall said rural East County shouldn’t always be the first choice when it comes to placing sexually violent predators.Woodall said, "It’s awful, it really is.
