(KGTV) - There were heated moments Wednesday while a group was defending the Christopher Columbus statue at discovery park in Chula Vista.Chula Vista City Councilman John McCann, with members of the Knights of Columbus standing by his side, called for the statue to be left alone."You can't change history," he said. "We should be able to accept all groups, you can't lift one group by destroying another group.""We're here to oppose the removal of the statue," said Rene Trevino, a member of the Knights of Columbus.The statue, which has been in place for nearly three decades, has stirred up controversy in the past.Thursday the city's Human Relations Commission will vote on a resolution to not only remove the statue and change the name of discovery park, but to change Columbus Day to Indigenous People's Day in Chula Vista.Last Columbus Day someone splashed red paint all over the statue, and before that someone plaque set in front of the statue was stolen."It's been a community family park and we've had opponents of Christopher Columbus use violence to vandalize and destroy the park multiple times, costing tax payers," said McCann.Many people have called the meaning behind the statue and the name of the park both painful and offensive.A woman in a car driving by the park Wednesday began shouting, "This is indigenous land, take that statue down!"She went on to say Christopher Columbus was just the beginning of an attempted assassination of Indigenous peoples.The topic caused people to clash at the park."You have these people trying to advocate for an idea that we're sick and tired of living under," said Rafael Bautista, who wants the statue removed.He was then confronted by a man who opposes the removal."What are you living under?" the man asked him. "What are you living under?"At one point Chula Vista Police officers arrived at the park, but things had settled down."Instead of trying to argue over things that happened over 500 years ago, we should be tackling today's issues," said McCann.Raeanne Herrera, a resident of Eastlake and part of the Jicarilla Apache Nation stopped by the park to offer her take."We can right the wrongs that have been done," she said. "That statue is the constant reminder of a beginning of a genocide. They tried, but they didn't."She went on to say change needs to start with education."Native American issues were never taught in school, what was I taught? Oh, that the pilgrims and Indians got together and shared a meal. That's an absolute lie, it was a celebration for a massacre that occurred," she explained.Both groups say they will continue effort to get their way, no matter what City of Chula Vista officials ultimately decide.If Thursday's resolution passes, it will head to the full city council for the final decision. 2818

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A former employee of the Sweetwater Union High School District pleaded guilty Wednesday to an embezzlement charge for siphoning more than ,000 from the district.Danya Margarita Williams, 42 of Chula Vista, is scheduled to be sentenced June 13 in a Chula Vista courtroom. Another embezzlement count, as well as a grand theft count, are expected to be dismissed as part of the plea deal.As part of her job, Williams was responsible for processing money orders received for fingerprint background investigations at the district, which are required during employment screenings, according to Chula Vista police Capt. Phil Collum.Each background investigation costs between to per applicant, and the applicants pay the fee using money orders, he said.``Instead of processing the money in accordance with district requirements, Williams deposited the money into her personal bank account,'' Collum said.District officials discovered the embezzlement -- which occurred between June 2016 and December 2017 -- and reported it to police, he said. Churches across the country are doing what they can to connect to parishioners from a distance. Now, some are switching from online back to in-person during this pandemic."It wasn't easy. It wasn't the best, but our people did well with it, and we tried to make the best of that situation. We had a lot of people that would come into the church to help put things together technically and musically and that sort of thing. And all that time, trying to maintain proper distancing," explained Dean Ropp, pastor of Midway Community Church in Georgia.From Zoom bible studies to prayer meetings over the phone, Ropp says their parishioners continue to tune in and stay engaged. But many still desired that in-person connection to their church. So Midway Community Church started offering their Sunday service in-person."As time went on, we were looking for ways we could get back together safely, and in our context, we decided with our size and facilities, we would try outdoor services,” the pastor said. “We have done outdoor services before, because we wanted to and so we knew how to do it.”Midway Community Church already had a stage that was set up in a grove of oak and pecan trees on their property, plus other equipment that they could move outdoors. They put in some extra precautions to keep people safe, like having people bring their own chairs."Then, we also, in this case, rather than sitting close together like we'd like to, we have cones set up for every family or individual, so everyone keeps a little eye on their distancing and that sort of thing," said Pastor Ropp.While attendance was terrific, Pastor Ropp decided they'd only hold the outdoor services every three weeks to ensure they weren't spreading the coronavirus. The outdoor services are one extra way for the church to stay connected with people since some aren't too keen on online church services or have had a hard time keeping up with church events because of the pandemic.Pastor Ropp says people were appreciative of the fact that they could still get together and physically be at church, even if it was from a distance."I can’t tell you how grateful we all were to be able to do it, the first time especially. It’s really carried that enthusiasm each time because we do love being together. That’s part of who we are as a church," said Pastor Ropp.As for how long churches across the country will be able to maintain an outdoor or online presence with their community, time and COVID-19 statistics will tell. Outdoor services may be difficult in the winter.Pastor Ropp says they're taking things month by month and brainstorming different ways to keep their church community together."There are a number of ideas we’ve had in how we would do it, whether it would be online registration or do it by classes the different groups were connected with,” he said. “So, there's a couple options we can do. We’re hoping we can get through it without going to that.”He says some people who may be suffering during the pandemic may need their local church now more than ever, so he hopes people who do belong to a church can continue to stay plugged into whatever services being offered. 3171

(KGTV) -- While most students in San Diego County are distance learning, there are some schools that are doing a combination of virtual and in-person learning.One school in the South Bay is working with a hybrid system that makes sure all students get the same learning opportunities.St. Rose of Lima Catholic School in Chula Vista welcomed students back on campus a month ago. To keep class sizes small and following state guidelines, they split the older graders into separate classrooms.But not everyone returned to campus, as dozens of families chose to stay at home and do distance learning.So, the school put together a hybrid system that allows all students to participate in real time teaching no matter where they are.With the use of technology, the teacher can see the students at home and the students that are in both classrooms.Sixth-grade teacher Michael Hart said with the help of Zoom, a camera, and classroom speakers, he can engage all students in daily lessons.“I have a Logitech camera that tracks me so it will follow me around the classroom or if I’m behind my desk. It’s just a simple remote,” Hart said.He also uses an app that makes sure every student is called upon equally, so they can all participate in class discussions.Sixth-grader Zachary Lastrella told ABC 10News, “If Mr. Hart asks us a question either in here or in the Zoom or in the other room, then we can answer the question.”As for tests, all of the students complete those using their laptops via Google Forms.Hart added, “It’s able to randomize the questions, whether it’s multiple choice or fill in the blanks or an essay response, and it does come down to academic honesty.”Students say physically their “classrooms” may be different now, but the important elements are still there.Devraaj Jani, a sixth grade students, said, “We’re still in one class, and we’re still together as one.” 1908

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A Chula Vista company that sells health and wellness products received a letter from the Federal Trade Commission Friday warning company representatives to halt alleged claims that its products could treat or prevent COVID-19.Youngevity International Inc. was issued a letter stating that claims made on the company's website or through social media posts "unlawfully advertise that certain products treat or prevent" coronavirus.The FTC alleges one such claim made by Youngevity "business opportunity participants or representatives" includes a statement that with certain company products, "your body will be able to withstand and eliminate Covid-19 and the vaccines forthcoming for Covid-19."The agency also states that a link on the company's website marked "FlattenTheCurve Shop Immune Support" redirects users to the company's online store, where various "immune support" products are available for sale.Phone calls made to the company were transferred to Youngevity CEO Stephen Wallach, whose voicemail mailbox was full Friday afternoon.The FTC's letter states that it is unlawful to advertise that a product can prevent, treat or cure human disease without scientific evidence or studies substantiating such claims, of which there are none for COVID-19 in relation to Youngevity's products.The letter to Youngevity was one of six sent to companies across the country on Friday. The FTC also sent a batch of nearly 100 letters last month to various companies allegedly claiming their products and therapies could treat or prevent COVID-19, including four based in San Diego: ActiveHerb Technology Inc., Aspire Regenerative Health, EcoShield, LLC and Forever Ozone. 1699
