(KGTV) — Now that guidance has been issued for playgrounds to reopen in California, Chula Vista says it reopened all of its 50 playgrounds on Friday.The city said the reopening process for its playgrounds includes guidance for visitors to follow to help curb the spread of the coronavirus:Visitors over the age of two need face coveringsUsers should wash and sanitize hands before and after useMaintain six-foot distancing from those outside your householdCaregiver supervision/monitoring required at all times to ensure guidelines are followedFollow maximum occupancy rules that are posted at entrance to each playgroundChula Vista says it will implement regular cleaning protocols, but warn that the locations may get a lot of use as they reopen. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- The Chula Vista Police Department is working to determine what caused a suspect to die more than 12-hours after he was taken into custody following a violent confrontation with officers.Jason Allen Watts, 29, of Spring Valley, was taken into custody Friday just before midnight after two people inside the 7-11 store at 403 Third Avenue reported him to appear under the influence of a substance and was refusing to leave. CVPD Capt. Phil Collum said Watts also called police to report that unknown persons were outside the store and were threatening to shoot him.Arriving officers encountered Watts inside the store but he ran behind the clerk’s counter and failed to comply with officer’s repeated orders, according to Collum."Officers spent time talking to Watts, trying to deescalate the situation to calm him and gain his compliance," Collum said. "As officers were talking to Watts, he punched a cash register on the counter and lifted it as though preparing to throw it at the officers."Collum said officers tried to take Watts into custody using less-lethal tools, including taser and pepper spray.Watts was eventually arrested but paramedics where called to the scene to evaluate him after he "continued to violently resist the officers," Collum said.The suspected was transported by ambulance to Paradise Valley Hospital for treatment where he was deemed suitable for incarceration by medical staff."While being booked into the San Diego County Central Detention Facility, further evaluations indicated Watts may need additional medical treatment," Collum said.Watts was subsequently transported by ambulance to UCSD Medical Center. "Once at UCSD, Watts began suffering medical complications and underwent treatment by medical staff," Collum said.  Watts was pronounced dead at 12:21 p.m. Saturday afternoon.The Chula Vista Police Department’s Crimes of Violence unit is investigating.  The cause of the death is unknown at this time. 2093

CINCINNATI -- Police in North Carolina detained a Cincinnati-bound American Airlines passenger Monday after the man reportedly ran off the plane onto the tarmac and swung a punch at an airport worker, Business Insider reported.While boarding Flight 5466 from Charlotte, North Carolina to Cincinnati on Feb. 26, the man appeared disoriented, according to the report. Another passenger on the plan, Kelly Smekens, told video licensing agency Storyful that airline officials asked the man to leave the flight because of his behavior. Leaders within the Latino community are now pleading with people to stay home during the holidays. Christmas is just days away, it's a festive time for family, a joyous time of gathering. But Nancy Maldonado with the Chicano Federation says this year, that cannot happen."I get it, it's hard, but it's necessary, and it's what we have to do right now," Maldonado said.The percentage of Latino San Diegans testing positive with COVID-19 is disproportionately high. While making up 34% of the county population, Latinos make up nearly 60% of positive COVID cases. With ICU space now extremely limited, Maldonado says they cannot afford to add to those statistics."Latinos have been hit really hard because of the overrepresentation in front line jobs, because of crowded housing, and because of a number of different factors," Maldonado said. "What we're seeing right now is the fallout of people gathering from Thanksgiving, and we don't want to see these numbers increase."Last week, ABC 10News reported that the wait times at the South Chula Vista Library's free, no-appointment COVID testing site were hours long. But beginning Sunday, the county changed the site to be appointment only. The goal is to keep people from going out and gathering at a COVID-19 hotspot.The South Bay, which is home to many Latinos, has been hit hardest with the virus. Maldonado says that is why the Chicano Federation has boots on the ground to launch the "With Pride" campaign."It's the 'Con Orgullo' campaign, 'With Pride,'" Maldonado translated. (KGTV) - More than a dozen people were forced out their homes late Tuesday night after a driver crashed her car into a fire hydrant at an apartment complex in Chula Vista, causing water to be sent nearly 30 feet into the air.At around 11:45 p.m., Chula Vista police responded to reports of a geyser spewing water into the air on 3rd Avenue.The geyser, from a broken fire hydrant, flooded a nearby apartment complex, forcing the evacuation of 16 people from six units, four of which were heavily flooded.A black car that struck the hydrant tried to leave just after the wreck, but the car's female driver eventually came back to speak with officers. Police questioned the young driver, but she was released.City crews spent a few hours helping clear the water from the apartments. 807
