SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Pacific Beach mother Sandy Algra says her number one job is keeping her child safe, something she wasn’t able to do a few months ago.Algra and her 3-year-old son were at Liberty Station Park when he was scratched by a dirty needle, sending him to the emergency room. Algra says he underwent an infectious disease consultation and will require HIV and Hepatitis C tests every six months.“Right now I’m trying to channel and redirect the anger that I feel about what happened to him, that I wasn’t able to keep him safe," said Algra.She's created a petition to designate San Diego’s playgrounds for children only; adults are only allowed if they’re accompanied by a child.Similar ordinances already exist in New York and Florida, people who violate them can face fines. "I think that most people can use common sense and understand that an adult is not meant to be living under a slide, or sitting on a swing doing drugs or otherwise, that's not what these playgrounds are designed for," said Algra. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police Thursday released a picture of the vehicle used in a deadly hit-and-run in Logan Heights last week. 52-year-old Maria Estrada Romero was hit while walking near Cesar Chavez Parkway on her way to a bus stop on November 15. Two days later, she died at the hospital. Police say the driver didn’t call 911, or stop to render aid to Romero. RELATED: Woman critically injured in Logan Heights crashThe vehicle used in the hit-and-run is described as a 1997 to 2004 white Ford F-150 truck with stock wheels. 10News spoke with family members about the crash Wednesday. Romero was a mother of five and grandmother of five. "Always really happy, an outgoing person," said Brianda Ramos.The family says they rushed to the hospital after learning Romero was struck by a hit-and-run driver. If you're a Comic-Con mega fan, patience is a vital part of the experience. Many slept on the grassy courtyard for hours, just to claim a seat inside the coveted Hall H. Fans say they can't get enough. "I've been a fan since the first season came out," Superfan, Marvin Calderon said. "I'm also a fan of the comic books."Calderon showed us his right arm. LAUSD and SDUSD join numerous other school systems taking similar measures as the number of COVID-19 cases continue to rise.Superintendent Austin Beutner of Los Angeles and Superintendent Cindy Marten of San Diego have issued the following joint statement: “California has now entered a critical new phase in the fight to stop the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic,” they said. “There is evidence the virus is already present in the communities we serve, and our efforts now must be aimed at preventing its spread. We believe closing the state’s two largest school districts will make an important contribution to this effort. For that reason, we plan to close, effective Monday, March 16. “Later today, we will be providing students, parents and staff with more information on our plans to continue providing learning opportunities for students during the closure. We have also directed staff at both districts to prepare to continue providing nutrition and other supports through family resource facilities.” The boards of Los Angeles Unified and San Diego Unified School Districts have unanimously approved this action.
