The Kirchner family has a lot to celebrate this holiday season. Their son, Karson, is a happy and energetic 11-month-old baby. He's come a long way since being diagnosed with a rare heart condition that will require constant vigilance. But his progress is yet another example of how, this year, doctors are making amazing strides in so many ways.Josh and Ashley Kirchner weren't sure how much time they would have with their son. At 28 weeks pregnant, they found out he had hypoplastic left heart syndrome, meaning the left side of his heart was underdeveloped."They came back with a doctor and then we're kind of like, 'This isn't good'. And the doctor told us, 'Well, we can't find part of his heart on the ultrasound'," recalled Josh Kirchner. Some research led the Kirchners to Children's Hospital Colorado, where Karson was enrolled in a study to determine if stem cells from his own umbilical cord blood could help his heart function."There's another part of stem cells that don't create new tissue but create an environment to improve the existing tissue that's there, and that's what we're doing with this particular stem cell therapy," explained Dr. James Jaggers, with Children's Hospital Colorado.Dr. Jaggers says this syndrome is the leading cause of death for children with heart defects in their first year of life. Karson's first surgery was when he was just two days old. His second to inject stem cells into his heart came a couple of months later."The mode of stem cell delivery was actual physical injection of the stem cells into the heart muscle itself. We do that in a number of different places on the heart to try and improve sort of a global function of the heart for the long term," said Dr. Jaggers. One problem the doctors faced with the second surgery was it came during the start of the pandemic when travel was shut down. The Kirchners drove six hours from their home in South Dakota, but the stem cells had to be driven from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota to Denver, a more than 12-hour drive.Karson still needs one more surgery, which doctors say will be when he's 2 or 3 years old. His parents know there's no roadmap for this. And while they wait to see how his body responds, they want to enjoy every moment."We get to enjoy our little boy and kind of live in the moment a little better and not have to worry about that hanging over our head. We know it's coming. But, like they said to do, don't worry about it. When it comes, it comes," said Josh Kirchner.Dr. Jaggers says the second phase of the study is done. Karson was the 16th to be accepted into it. The next phase will also include the use of stem cells in the third surgery. Dr. Jaggers says preliminary data shows some improved heart function. They now need to know how long it will last. 2789

The number of people filing for unemployment for the first time is dropping slightly. Just over 800,000 people filed last week, which is less than what was expected. For perspective, only about 287,000 filed the same time last year. The total number of people still receiving some kind of benefits is just under 21 million. Meanwhile, some people who do have jobs are leaving a lot of money on the table in 2020.“If you don’t take time off, you are basically giving the company back almost a paycheck, like here you go, here's my one-week salary,” said Vicki Salemi, Monster Career Expert.Career website Monster found almost half of workers didn't take their full paid time off this year. The pandemic turned work life balance into an all-at-home blended mess for many. Many workers said they didn't take their time because there was nothing to do, nowhere to go, or they were worried about their jobs.Only a small amount of workers are able to rollover their unused time into 2021.Taking time off has been especially critical this year.“You can see things more clearly. You may even be happier thinking about your time off even if that just meant you stayed on your living room couch and binged the latest show,” said Salemi. Some employers, like Monster, even added mental health or additional days off this year, recognizing the extreme stress many were under.Salemi says even if you don’t have big plans for your time away from work, create some sort of framework.“It doesn't have to be rigid, but just so you feel like at the end of the day or the end of the time off, you don’t want to feel like it was for not, like its OK if you're just going to rest this whole time,” said Salemi. If you didn't get in all that paid time this year, depending on your circumstance, it’s worth asking to see if you could carry some over into next year. Now is also a good time to plan for 2021. Monster suggests even starting small with some three-day weekends in January and February. 1978

The Phoenix Police Department says the ex-boyfriend of Kiera Bergman, a 19-year-old woman who has been missing since August 4, has been arrested for identity theft.Police say 23-year-old Jon Clark was being questioned in relation to Bergman’s disappearance when police found several items with the personal identification of other people as well as items indicating forgery in his vehicle.Clark was arrested Friday and booked into jail for 22 counts of aggravated identity theft and two counts of forgery.Police have given no indication that this arrest connects Clark to Bergman’s missing person’s case.Bergman was last seen at her home near on Aug. 4.According to police, Bergman never returned home after leaving and has not been seen or heard from since.Kiersten Bragg, Bergman's mother, says her daughter went to work that Saturday morning, and Clark picked her up but she never made it back to their apartment.Police still say her disappearance is considered suspicious, and they are still asking anyone with any information on her disappearance to call 480-WITNESS. 1085

The New York state attorney general's civil lawsuit against the Donald J. Trump Foundation, President Donald Trump and his three eldest children can proceed after a state court judge on Friday denied their motion to dismiss the case.In her decision, Justice Saliann Scarpulla ruled that a sitting president can face a civil lawsuit in state court for actions not taken in his official capacity. That ruling puts Scarpulla in agreement with another recent ruling against Trump, a decision in the defamation lawsuit brought against him by Summer Zervos, a former contestant on "The Apprentice."And, Scarpulla said, it is in line with the US Supreme Court's 1997 ruling concerning President Bill Clinton in response to Paula Jones' sexual harassment lawsuit."Allowing this action to proceed is entirely consistent with the Supreme Court's holding in Clinton v. Jones that the President of the United States is 'subject to the laws for his purely private acts,'" Scarpulla wrote. As she did in court in October, the judge noted that Trump has appealed the Zervos decision, and if the appeals court rules in his favor, the attorney general's office would likely need to amend its lawsuit to remove Trump himself as a defendant. The Trump Foundation case is being considered in the New York Supreme Court, the state's trial court. The suit, filed in June, names as defendants the foundation, Trump and his children Eric, Donald Jr. and Ivanka Trump, all of whom sat on the charity's board. It alleges that they violated federal and state charities law with a "persistent" pattern of conduct that included unlawful coordination with the 2016 Trump presidential campaign. The attorney general's office, led by Barbara Underwood, is seeking to dissolve the Trump Foundation and wants .8 million in restitution, plus additional penalties. The office is also seeking to ban Trump from serving as a director of any New York nonprofit for 10 years and to prohibit the other board members, the Trump children, from serving for one year."As we detailed in our petition earlier this year, the Trump Foundation functioned as little more than a checkbook to serve Mr. Trump's business and political interests," Underwood said in a statement Friday. "There are rules that govern private foundations — and we intend to enforce them, no matter who runs the foundation."An attorney for the defendants, Alan Futerfas, said "the decision means only that the case goes forward. As we have maintained throughout, all of the money raised by the Foundation went to charitable causes to assist those most in need."He added: "As a result, we remain confident in the ultimate outcome of these proceedings."The judge gave the defendants 45 days to respond to the lawsuit. 2745
