Caterpillar could eliminate nearly 900 jobs in the US and Central America, the company said on Friday.Job cuts will happen at locations in Texas and Panama as part of a restructuring, a spokeswoman said. Employees were notified earlier this year, she said. The heavy equipment manufacturer also said it is "contemplating the closure" of an engine factory in La Grange, Illinois, which is part of its subsidiary Progress Rail, a supplier of railroad and transit products. The closure, if it happens, would eliminate 600 full-time jobs in engine manufacturing. The company said it might be "transitioning" its rail manufacturing to facilities in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, as well as "outside suppliers." The company said the employees were informed in January.Caterpillar is planning to close its work tools facility in Waco, Texas, by the end of 2018, eliminating 200 job and contractor positions there, the company said. The employees were notified last month. The company plans to move the manufacturing to Wamego, Kansas, and also to "external suppliers."Caterpillar also confirmed that it's closing a facility in Panama, and that 80 jobs will be eliminated. The company said these workers were informed in January. The cost-cutting measures come even as a growing global economy is boosting demand for its heavy-duty equipment. The company reported in January that quarterly sales grew 18%, its first increase since 2012.Sales in North American grew by 46% driven by selling and leasing machinery for home building, infrastructure and for the oil and gas industries. Sales were also boosted by increased spending in China. The company added 3,000 employees last year to meet demand, bringing its total workforce to 98,000. 1735

CDC Director Robert Redfield stated on Thursday during the first White House coronavirus task force briefing held since July that schools should remain open during the pandemic, despite a number of major school districts going virtual only in recent weeks. This week, New York City became the latest major school district to close building amid a surge in cases across the country.“Today, there is extensive data that we have gathered over the last two to three months to confirm that k-12 schools can operate with face-to-face learning and they can do it safely and they can do it responsibly," Redfield said. "The infections we have identified in the schools, when they have been evaluating, were not acquired in schools. They were acquired in the community and the household.”CDC data released in October indicated that children can spread the virus within schools, but children under the age of 10 were less likely to do so. The CDC’s data did not find a link between a rise in cases and schools reopening in the fall.Earlier this week, the American Association of Pediatrics noted that over 1 million American children have been infected with the coronavirus."We urgently need a new, nation-wide strategy to control the pandemic, and that should include implementing proven public health measures like mask wearing and physical distancing,” said AAP President Sally Goza. “This pandemic is taking a heavy toll on children, families and communities, as well as on physicians and other front-line medical teams. We must work now to restore confidence in our public health and scientific agencies, create fiscal relief for families and pediatricians alike, and support the systems that support children and families such as our schools, mental health care, and nutrition assistance.”Redfield and Vice President Mike Pence both incorrectly stated during Thursday’s White House coronavirus task force update that the CDC never recommended school shutdowns.Earlier guidance called for schools in areas with substantial community transmission (the CDC did not distinguish between uncontrolled or controlled) to, "Implement extended school dismissals (e.g., dismissals for longer than two weeks). This longer-term, and likely broader-reaching, dismissal strategy is intended to slow transmission rates of COVID-19 in the community. During extended school dismissals, also cancel extracurricular group activities, school-based afterschool programs, and large events."Dr. Elinore F. McCance-Katz, the assistant secretary for Mental Health and Substance Abuse, said there needs to be a focus on students’ mental health.“We must find a way to alleviate that stress without ignoring the fact that our nation faces the very real and deadly virus,” McCance-Katz said. “The work of schools and the school personnel do daily is valuable beyond any words I can deliver. In addition to education, schools provide their children a profound sense of security and stability for the structure and safety of schools are an integral role of health.”McCance-Katz added that teachers and staff need to feel safe when going to schools, and that communities must do what is needed to minimize community spread.“We must use masks and we must enforce social distancing, we must employ creative and innovative ways to limit the number of children in a building at any given time. There are tools we have and we must think through help us to use them to keep our schools open,” she said. 3466

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - A drone company based in Carlsbad has found a way to use their drones to help the fight against COVID-19.Charles Moss, the owner of FD1 Drone, created new software that uses artificial intelligence to track the size of crowds, as well as the distance between people. He hopes it can be used to enforce social distancing in public places."It's a tool," says Moss. "It's the ultimate tool to enhance our current abilities."The software connects a drone's camera with a computer, feeding real-time information about crowd size and social distancing. It can also detect which people are wearing masks, and which people aren't.On the computer screen, green dots show people who are property distanced. Red dots mean they're too close.Moss says it can be used at parks, beaches, schools, shopping centers, concerts or anywhere else people gather. And the software isn't confined to drones. Moss says it can be installed on street light cameras, similar to the technology the City of San Diego uses in their Internet of Things system. Like the IOT system, Moss' software does not use any facial recognition technology."In order to give people a better comfort out in public, they need insight as to their environments," he says. "The human brain can only process so much data, so much information. This will help them make better decisions."Moss says he's been in contact with a few cities and schools to deploy the technology, but concerns over cost and training has kept his software grounded. He's hopeful it will catch on soon, so it can help keep people safe during the Pandemic. But he says it also has practical applications after the Pandemic ends. Moss says his software could be used to spot wildfires, measure deterioration in coral reefs, inspect power lines and more."It's more of a tool to provide situational awareness, so we can plan," says Moss. "We call it AI for good." 1914
