SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Foreign ambassadors from around the world made their way to San Diego to visit the border and see how the US handles security Monday. Rolling down a gravel road, at the US-Mexico border, a van carried several foreign ambassadors to the US. The group, part of more than 30, came to San Diego for the State Department’s “Experience America Program.” Monday’s stop – a 14-mile stretch of newly constructed primary and secondary border wall just east of Otay Mesa. As the ambassadors approached, work was being done in the hope of finishing the project by January. “Today we’ve been told how you are protecting the US-Mexico border,” said Javlon Vahobov, Uzbekistan Ambassador to the United States.Like the Uzbekistan Ambassador, this is their first time to California. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hoteliers across San Diego are seeing a significant loss of business from mass cancellations as efforts continue to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus. The San Diego Convention Center Corp. reports five conferences have either been canceled or postponed, meaning upwards of 43,000 people would not be coming to San Diego and spending money locally. "The hotel industry has seen a significant drop in business, a significant impact on the workforce," said Namara Mercer, who chairs the San Diego Hotel Motel Association. "Anecdotally the shifts are being cut, people aren’t going to work if occupancy is not high."LIST: San Diego events, schools that have changed plans due to the coronavirusAs conferences cancel, large convention hotels downtown are finding themselves with hundreds, if not thousands, of unexpected empty rooms. That can be costly also to other hotels. "What do they do? They reduce their rates - the big convention hotels - and then they start taking away business from all of us who are in outlying areas," said Bob Rauch, CEO of RAR Hospitality, which owns three San Diego County hotels and manages nine others.Rauch said cancellations were up 15 percent last week, and he expects that to increase to 25 percent this week. He says he expects it to peak next week at 35 percent before he expects things to calm down. As of now, he has not cut staff hours, but he said things could change if the loss of business continues to persist. "If this worsens over the next couple of weeks, we will create some kind of shared pain program," said Rauch, adding that it would likely involve cutting hours across the board so no employees are laid off. As of December, there were 31,700 people in the county working for hotels, up about 2.6 percent from December 2018, according to the state Employment Development Department. 1868

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hate crime charges were filed Monday against the Little Italy man accused of attacking three Muslim women wearing hijabs. Kyle Allen, 50, pleaded not guilty to battery in a San Diego courtroom following the Oct. 6 incident. The women were walking on Columbia Street when Allen approached them from the other direction. Witnesses said Allen lunged his shoulder into them, tried to remove one woman's hijab, then hit one of the women. RELATED: San Diego Police: Alleged attack on 3 women in hijabs a possible hate crime "As I got closer I heard him calling her names and telling them to go back to where they came from," a witness who only wanted to be identified as Amy told 10News. Passersby trailed Allen back to his high-rise apartment in Little Italy and called police. San Diego Police said Allen answered his front door while holding a handgun with a silencer. A total of 10 guns were found in Allen's home and seized, investigators said. Allen was arrested without incident.Protection orders are in place for the three women, keeping Allen from contacting them or coming within 100 yards.Allen will return to court Dec. 19 for a preliminary hearing. He faces up to four years, four months in prison if tried and convicted, according to the District Attorney's office. 1300
