WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Postal Service has launched a new website to help Americans vote by mail in the November general election. The USPS announced the creation of usps.com/votinginfo Friday, saying the site is meant to provide the electorate with clear and concise information about voting by mail. The website is also meant to help election officials as states choose to expand mail-in voting options for the upcoming elections, so that voters don’t have to risk contracting the coronavirus at the polls. For domestic voters, the website provides direct links to federal election resources as well as links to state-specific resources. For overseas and military voters, the new site provides additional information, including links to resources supporting their election participation. The site also highlights what the USPS views as the most critical information for voters who opt to vote through the U.S. mail: that, in requesting or casting a mail-in ballot, they not only must comply with their local jurisdictions’ requirements, but also should start the process early. To allow sufficient time for voters to receive, complete and return ballots via the mail, the USPS strongly recommends that voters request ballots at the earliest point allowable, but no later than 15 days prior to the election date. The Postal Service also recommends that voters mail their ballots at least one week prior to their states’ due dates to allow for timely receipt by election officials.Voters should contact their local election officials for further information about deadlines and other requirements. The USPS says it remains fully committed to fulfilling its role in the electoral process and can handle the anticipated increase in election mail.“Election officials and voters are being asked to be mindful of the Postal Service’s established delivery standards and consider how the mail actually works, so that voters have adequate time to request, receive, complete and send their mail-in ballots,” wrote the USPS in a press release. “The Postal Service will continue to do everything in its power to efficiently handle and deliver Election Mail, including ballots, in a manner consistent with the proven processes and procedures that have been relied upon for years.” 2273

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration has announced that it will release nearly billion in aid to Puerto Rico to help the island rebuild its electrical grid and repair schools from the devastation of Hurricane Maria three years earlier. In a statement, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said .6 billion would be included for those projects. "Federal funding of .6 billion will allow the Puerto Rico Electrical Power Authority to repair and replace thousands of miles of transmission and distribution lines, electrical substations, power generation systems, office buildings, and make other grid improvements," McEnany said in the statement. "The billion grant for the Puerto Rico Department of Education will focus on restoring school buildings and educational facilities across the island."The announcement comes amid criticism that the assistance was overdue and being released now only for political purposes. The grant comes as President Donald Trump, who has balked at providing assistance to the island territory, and former Vice President Joe Biden court voters in Florida, which is home to a large population of people from Puerto Rico.In a press briefing on Friday, President Trump added that the aid package wasn't the only exciting thing happening in Puerto Rico - it was their pharmaceutical industry."We have spoken to various companies, and they are willing to go there," Trump said. "They want to have a little bit of help, but they are willing to go to Puerto Rico and Puerto Rico is going to be very exciting, let's going to happen. They were on the verge of doing it, and they took away all the incentives. I don't know how they allowed that to happen. It was very bad for Puerto Rico and the people of Puerto Rico. That was done by Democrats, and a Republican is bringing it back."Trump added that Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden "devastated" the country when he voted to eliminate a critical tax provision in 1996.A year ago, Trump stated in a tweet that Puerto Rico was one of the "most corrupt places on earth," but on Friday, he said it wasn't anymore because he's the best thing that's ever happened to Puerto Rico."I have to say in a very nice way, in a very respectful way, I'm the best thing that ever happened to Puerto Rico," Trump said. "Nobody even close. As a result, the island's economy under the previously mentioned names [Biden and former President Barack Obama], it just absolutely cratered. Biden's vote left the United States at the mercy of foreign suppliers, putting our national security and health at risk."Florida is a critical swing state in the Nov. 3 election. 2654

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon says the U.S. will deploy additional troops and military equipment to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to beef up security, as President Donald Trump has at least for now decided against any immediate military strike on Iran in response to the attack on the Saudi oil industry.Defense Secretary Mark Esper says this is a first step, and he is not ruling out additional moves down the road. He says it's a response to requests from the Saudis and the UAE to help improve their air and missile defenses.Esper and Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, say details of the deployments will be determined over the coming days. 690

We’ve all been stuck on the side of the road, or heard a funny noise, leak or smell coming from the car. Here are some easy and inexpensive devices that will take the worry out of a bad situation.Mechanic Dave Guthrie says, everyone should have a car diagnostic code reader.“With those types of pieces what they do is tap into the on-board computer system in the vehicle and retrieves what are a series of stored trouble codes or fault codes.”Guthrie says, that device can be beneficial when it comes to troubleshooting the problem. For example, if the fault code pertains to a faulty gas cap then you’ll be fine to wait and take it to the mechanic; instead of getting it looked at immediately.Whether the fault codes point to a serious problem or not, Guthrie says, you should still take your car in to get it inspected by a certified mechanic. The next device that’s always great to have in your car is a portable battery. They are oversized lithium cellphone batteries that can rapidly jump start your vehicle without needing help from another driver.Guthrie says, to ensure safety and maintenance on your vehicle, it’s best you take it in twice a year to a mechanic. 1177

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Louisiana is a state dealing with not one, but two multi-billion-dollar natural disasters within the span of six weeks: Hurricanes Laura and Delta.“This family had just moved in less than a week ago,” said Chuck Robichaux, mayor of the town of Rayne, Louisiana. “They’re just getting settled in, haven’t even put all their things in place, and they’re having to move out until we can get it repaired.”It’s a heartbreaking scenario playing out across the country this year.Up until Hurricane Delta, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the country experienced 16 natural disasters this year, each with damages over a billion. Those included wildfires and droughts in the West, tornadoes, severe weather and flooding in the Midwest and hurricanes along the East and Gulf Coast. That number, 16, tied the record for the most billion-dollar disasters ever recorded in a single year, until Hurricane Delta broke the record with at least billion in damages.“The overall trend is one of an increasing number of billion-dollar disasters,” said Jeff Schlegelmilch, director of the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University. He said there are two main reasons there have been more of these high-priced disasters. The first is climate change.“To deny climate change is to deny one of the critical drivers of these disasters,” Schlegelmilch said. The other reason, he said, comes down to where people choose to live. The population is growing, which is leading to more development in vulnerable areas, like in hurricane-susceptible coastlines and in wooded areas susceptible to wildfires.“Are we prepared to accommodate such large numbers of people in areas that are increasingly vulnerable to disasters?” Schlegelmilch said. “And, if not, what investments do we need to make in order to do that?”That might mean putting stricter building codes in place and rethinking disasters beyond just responding to them when they happen, the way FEMA and states do now.“It's not just about responding to the disaster, it's about preventing it, it's about mitigating it,” Schlegelmilch said. “So, looking at this more holistically, I don't think we yet have a great model for doing this federally or at the states or at the community level.”It’s more than just about the numbers, though, when it comes to billion-dollar disasters. There is a tremendous personal cost, too.“What we don't really capture as accurately within those numbers are the loss of lives, the loss of livelihoods and the communities that can actually be held back for a generation or more,” Schlegelmilch said. That leaves impacts felt both now and potentially by generations that follow. 2707
