SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect was behind bars Wednesday in connection with a mugging that left a 73-year-old disabled woman gravely injured last week on a downtown roadside near Cortez Hill.Stanley Harris Hinton, 31, was arrested Monday on suspicion of carrying out the robbery and assault in the Core-Columbia district of San Diego, according to police.The 6-foot-3-inch, 215-pound suspect allegedly attacked Nannette Altevers, who uses a walker, near the corner of B Street and Fourth Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. Friday.Patrol officers responding to a 911 call about the assault found the assailant gone and Altevers suffering from extensive upper body trauma, Lt. Matt Dobbs said. She remains hospitalized in critical condition.Due to the severity of the victim's injuries, homicide detectives have taken charge of the case, the lieutenant said.Hinton was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, assault, robbery and elder abuse. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Barrels holding an unknown substance were found on a Rancho Pe?asquitos sidewalk today, and San Diego Fire-Rescue investigators were looking into it.The unidentified drums were found unattended around 9:30 a.m. on Kika Court near Mercy Road.Hazmat crews took samples from the drums but were unable to determine what substance was inside, San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesman Jose Ysea said.Investigators left the scene, and a contractor was called in to remove and dispose of the material. 510

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - According to a San Diego County prescription drug abuse report released Thursday, local opioid and prescription drug overdose deaths have increased significantly in recent years.The 2020 San Diego County Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force Report Card found that between 2018 and 2019, the number of unintentional fentanyl deaths increased by 64% and prescription drug deaths rose nearly 12%.The report card provides a variety of data to measure the prescription drug misuse problem in the region by looking at multiple factors and data points over the last five years in San Diego County.In 2019, 645 people died of an unintentional overdose caused by prescription and illicit drugs, as well as alcohol.Those include:151 fentanyl deaths compared to the 92 reported the previous year. The number continued to increase in 2020. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid primarily coming from Mexico that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine and 25 to 50 times stronger than heroin;275 deaths due to prescription drugs -- opioids and non-opioids -- up from 245 in 2018; and124 heroin deaths, up from the 105 reported the year before.In addition to deaths, the report card tracks additional key indicators of opioid misuse in the region.The report also found 6,162 visits to local emergency rooms in 2018, compared to 6,607 in 2017. Data for last year won't be available until 2021.Additionally, nearly half of adults arrested reported misusing prescription drugs in 2019. One silver lining is that fewer 11th graders reported prescription drug use in 2019 than in 2015.San Diego County funds prevention and treatment services throughout the region. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman was killed when she walked into the path of two marked police cruisers in the Hillcrest community of San Diego, police said Sunday.The vehicles were going westbound in the 100 block of West Washington Street when the woman, standing on the north curb line of the street -- and not in the crosswalk -- walked into the cruisers' path a little after 11 p.m.Saturday, the San Diego Police Department reported.She was struck by both cars and rushed to UC San Diego Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. 540
