NEW YORK CITY — A man sleeping on a Harlem street was hit with fireworks and suffered burns, police said Monday after a video of the incident circulated on social media.Video shows someone lighting and throwing a firework at the man, who appears to be homeless. The firework explodes as it hits the man.Another person can be seen in the video filming the incident.An NYPD spokesperson said the department received a call at around 4 a.m. Monday near 62 Lenox Ave. (Malcolm X Boulevard) in Harlem.Officers found the man, 66, suffering from minor burns. NEW YORK — Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the passage of legislation that prohibits domestic abusers from possessing handguns and long guns as part of his 2018 Women's Agenda.Previously, there was a loophole in which domestic abusers only had to surrender handguns, they must now surrender all firearms."The recent wave of mass shootings is horrifying, and the federal government's failure to act on any form of meaningful gun safety laws is unconscionable," Governor Cuomo said. "New York is once again leading the way to prevent gun violence, and with this common sense reform, break the inextricable link between gun violence and domestic violence.This legislation builds on our gun laws -- already the strongest in the nation-- to make New York safer and stronger." New York law previously prohibited the possession of firearms for those convicted of a felony or a limited number of misdemeanor "serious" offenses. Many are on the verge of homelessness as cities and towns scramble to distribute what little federal emergency funds they have left.Amanda Berman is the Director of Housing and Community Development in Newton, Massachusetts, a wealthy suburb near Boston. But even some of the nation's wealthiest cities are realizing their residents are not immune from economic impact of the pandemic.“This was there all along. We’ve been having a housing crisis forever. This is exposing how deep the cracks are,” Berman said.With help from the CARES Act, Newton was able to secure million in emergency housing funds. To spread the money out as best they could, the city decided to assist people in low-income housing with 70% of their rent. At least 170 families have been helped in the last two months.“You fight and fight to get ahead and something like this throws you back really far,” Berman added.Nationally, 20% of households missed their rent payments last month.
