BEIJING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- China's work safety conditions remained grim as the number of work safety accidents remained large, illegal production still posed challenges and safety management was still loose, a senior official said on Sunday.Yang Yuanyuan, deputy chief of the State Administration of Work Safety, made the remarks at a forum on work safety in Beijing.In the first five months this year, 499 people were dead or missing in 36 major workplace accidents such as coal mine flood and gas explosion, a rise of nearly 40 percent from the same period a year ago, Yang said.Notably, five severe accidents, each with a death toll of more than 30, had happened so far this year, killing 181 lives, up nearly 70 percent year on year, he said.Yang noted the grave picture reflected poor enforcement of safety rules, and enterprises' mere pursuit of output in sacrifice of work safety.He said the government would make continuous efforts to bring those accidents under control.

HAIKOU, April 25 (Xinhua) -- China's fishery administration said on Sunday it had started regular patrols of the South China Sea, sending two vessels to take over from two others currently escorting Chinese fishing boats in the area."China Yuzheng 301 and 302 take over from China Yuzheng 311 and 202, which have been patrolling the sea area of Nansha Islands since April 1," said Wu Zhuang, director of Administration of Fishery and Fishing Harbor Supervision for South China Sea under the Ministry of Agriculture.He said the patrol ships were sent to escort Chinese fishing boats in the South China Sea and reinforce China's fishing rights of the waters around Nansha Islands.The two ships set sail from Sanya, a coastal city in China's Southernmost Island Province of Hainan, on Sunday.China's patrol vessels escort the country's fishing boats and help treat fishermen who fall ill, Wu said. NANCHANG, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Ministry of Commerce released regulations concerning foreign investment in China's central region here Thursday.The region - which includes the provinces of Shanxi, Anhui, Jiangxi, Henan, Hubei and Hunan - should attract high-end green industry with policy incentives and guidance, the regulations say.It should give priority to manufacturing while eyeing investment in other sectors like agriculture, sophisticated processing industries, trade, finance, education, culture, tourism and leasing.The region should nurture business-friendly policies and slash transaction costs to attract businesses considering moving inland from the coastal regions.The rules call for rectifying any practices that disrupt business operation, including authorities' arbitrary law enforcement.The rules also urged a market-oriented administration system consistent with international rules.The ministry also pledged to establish state-level industrial transfer demonstration zones and to improve provincial industrial parks.
