The U.S. again broke its daily record for new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, as local health departments recorded 50,000 new confirmed cases of the virus, according to a database kept by Johns Hopkins. The previous record was set Tuesday when health departments reported about 45,400 new cases. The figures highlight a continued spike in cases throughout the country over the past few weeks. Prior to the recent peak, the highest daily increase in confirmed cases came on April 24, when health departments reported about 36,400 new cases. The U.S. has recorded at least 38,900 new cases every day for the last week.(John's Hopkins)Because the Johns Hopkins database is reliant on reporting from local health departments, the data doesn't necessarily reflect a patient's day of infection. Daily case numbers are often higher mid-week because some local health departments or test centers may be closed on weekends. It's not just cases that are on the rise. According to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, use of hospital beds, ICU beds and invasive ventilators have all risen in recent weeks after months of falling resource use. Many states have either "paused" or chosen to take steps back in their reopening process as cases and hospitalizations linked to the virus continue to rise.On Tuesday, Dr. Anthony Fauci — the government's top expert on infectious diseases — called the recent spike in cases "disturbing," and said that he could foresee the U.S. reporting up to 100,000 new COVID-19 cases a day if recent trends continue. 1593

The Southeast's first winter storm of the season has faded, with clear conditions expected Tuesday, but tens of thousands of people remain without power after the weekend's record-setting snow. The storm killed three people in North Carolina and grounded thousands of flights in the region, including more than 500 flights on Monday.Early Tuesday, more than 44,500 customers in North Carolina, 20,000 in South Carolina and 15,600 in Virginia were without power, according to Poweroutage.US.PHOTOS: As southeastern winter storm fades, canceled flights and icy roads remainCNN meteorologist Michael Guy said temperatures Tuesday would be cold, but above freezing. "At night there will still be possibilities of refreezing over bridges and overpasses on the roads," he warned. The Virginia Department of Transportation advised drivers to allow extra braking distance and to take it slow."If you plan to travel overnight, watch for slick roads & use extra caution. Dropping temps could cause any moisture on the roadways to refreeze," the transportation department said on Twitter.North Carolina Emergency Management also warned on Twitter that freezing nighttime temperatures could make driving hazardous. The Yale University police officers who were called to investigate a napping black graduate student ultimately admonished the white student who had contacted police in the first place, a Yale vice president says. The incident, captured in two Facebook Live videos, has sparked outrage about racial profiling and policing.Kimberly Goff-Crews, Yale's vice president for Student Life, said in an email to students Wednesday night that she's been "deeply troubled" by the incident.Officers interrogated Lolade Siyonbola, a black graduate student at Yale, early Tuesday after a white student found her sleeping in a common room of their dorm and called police.Siyonbola had been working on a paper in the Hall of Graduate Studies and fell asleep. Another student came in, turned on the lights and told her, "You're not supposed to be sleeping here. I'm going to call the police."Two police officers arrived and began questioning Siyonbola in a stairwell. When she asked them about the complaint, one officer said, "She called us (and) said there's somebody who appeared they weren't ... where they were supposed to be."The officers asked for her ID, and after some delay in verifying the spelling of her name, she was cleared to go.In the aftermath, Yale officials have defended the police response to the situation."We believe the Yale police who responded followed procedures," said Yale spokeswoman Karen Peart. "It is protocol in such circumstances for the police to ask for student (or staff) identification cards. Both students had to identify themselves."CNN has reached out to the other student for comment. The delay with verifying Siyonbola's ID was because the name on her card was her preferred name, which did not exactly match her name in university records, Peart said."As we do with every incident, we will be reviewing the call and the r
