NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A veteran wounded in the line of duty, who was told he would never run again, is gearing up to run a marathon in Nashville.Randy Woodward, of Smyrna, Tennessee is in the process of running 10 marathons in five weeks.He will complete each 26.2-mile run while carrying an 8-foot-by-5-foot American flag.“It’s been really great,” said Woodward.  “It will be something to look back on and say you did it. You finished it.”Woodward has already completed marathons in Kansas City, Missouri; Des Moines, Iowa; Lexington, Virginia; Arlington, Virginia; Savannah, Georgia and Bowling Green, Ohio. He has plans to run in future events in Louisville, Kentucky; Fort Benning, Georgia and another in Nashville.Woodward was on his second tour in Iraq when he was hit by a roadside bomb. He spent nine months in hospitals recovering.  At the time, doctors told him he would never run again.“Fortunately, I have all my limbs,” said Woodward.  “I’m blessed and thankful for that.”Woodward was awarded a Purple Heart for his bravery.Having run a marathon before his injury, Woodward was determined to run again. After recovering, he set his sights on the bold decision to run back-to-back marathons over the course of consecutive weeks.At each stop, Woodward’s efforts and his American flag have been getting a lot of attention.“I got just an outpouring of support from people,” said Woodward.  “It’s been really great.”Woodward said the reason he is running is to spread patriotism, and he hopes his efforts inspire others.“There is just so much divide in this country, and there is so much hate,” Woodward said.   1709

Nasim Aghdam, the woman accused of shooting and injuring multiple people at YouTube headquarters in San Bruno before turning the gun on herself, drove up from San Diego, according to KRON.Authorities said they believe the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute. KRON reports that the woman shot her boyfriend and that the others injured were caught in the crossfire. Officials in San Bruno said Tuesday afternoon that three people were wounded and the suspect died of a possible self-inflicted gunshot wound.Police were called to the headquarters just before 1 p.m. and were on scene within two minutes.After arriving on scene, officers found a wounded victim outside the building before encountering a second person, who was likely a suspect, shot from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.Officers later found two others wounded in a nearby business, officials said. Helicopter video shows hundreds of people running out of the building with their hands up after shots reportedly rang out.A witness reported hearing as many as 20 shots, according to KRON. (KGTV) -- Police in National City are investigating after a man was shot and killed near a 7-Eleven early Sunday morning. Police responded to the 100 block of North Highland Avenue just before 5 a.m. after receiving reports of gunshots in the area.After arriving, police found a 55-year-old man who had been shot. NATIONAL CITY, Cali. — A California woman is heartbroken after she was forced to leave her beloved fish at Denver International Airport.It was supposed to be a happy homecoming for Lanice Powless and her best friend."I've taken him everywhere with me," she said.But Wednesday, the University of Colorado sophomore left Denver without "Cassie," her pink, male beta fish."This lady was just not having it," Powless said. "So the supervisor comes and she said 'Unfortunately, you cannot bring fish onto Southwest Airlines."Her freshman year in Colorado, Powless admitted she was lonely and wanted a pet. She considered getting a dog or cat but her mother convinced her that a fish would be a better fit. She got Cassie at the local Petco, but did not realize she would end up falling in love with him."I put my finger in there, he come up and nibble my finger. He was a cool fish," she said. More than 100 people die from opioid overdoses every day. Amid the opioid crisis, a newly FDA-approved opioid called Dsuvia could soon be hitting the market, and it’s said to be more powerful than morphine and fentanyl.Dsuvia was designed, in part, to help soldiers on the battlefield.For Navy veteran Rich Shock, a back injury turned out to be far worse than anything he experienced in Iraq and Iran. “At first, started with Vicodin and then it became Norco, and then they doubled the dose of Norco, and then it became Norco with Oxycontin,” describes Shock of his prescribed medication.  As his tolerance and dosage got higher, he started doctor shopping until they cut him off. That's when a friend offered him heroin. “He's like, ‘I'm telling you. It's cheaper. It's easier to find and it lasts longer.’ And he was right. He was absolutely right,” says Shock. The addiction cost him everything, including his job, his family and his home. He said he had one thought.  “How did I get this bad? Like, how did I end up here? After everything. You know I have a wife and a family and a good job,” Shock says. Veterans are twice as likely to suffer from opioid addiction, according to a United States Department of Veterans Affairs health system study. That's one reason behind the outrage over the FDA’s approval of the new, powerful painkiller.Dsuvia is 1,000 times more potent than morphine and 10 times more than fentanyl. It's restricted for use only in battlefields and emergency rooms for patients suffering tremendous pain from traumatic injuries.Even still, the chairman of the committee that reviewed the drug, did not want it approved for fears it will be abused. “I think that this the approval of this drug represents a failure of their most fundamental duties, and I think the veterans are [going to] pay for it with their lives,” says Brenton Huston, with Volunteers of America Veteran Support and Services. Hutson is a Marine who works with veterans.“There are already other drugs out there, less addictive, less potent that are also taken that way,” Hutson says. “So, there's really just no need for it.”Shock fought his way out of addiction, but he fears what could happen with a much more powerful drug. “With the opiate problem we have right now, why would you want to manufacture a drug that stronger? It doesn't make any sense to me,” Shock says. To help prevent abuse, the FDA is putting tight restrictions on Dsuvia. It won't be sold in retail pharmacies or be available for outpatient use, and it cannot be used for more than 72 hours. 2632
