PARIS (AP) — Paris city hall has been fined 90,000 euros (9,408) for having appointed too many women to top positions in 2018, in breach of a law aimed at ensuring gender balance. Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo denounced the fine as “unfair” and “absurd” on Tuesday during a meeting of the city council. In 2018, 11 women and 5 men — representing just over 30% — were appointed to senior positions in the Paris city hall. A 2013 law required a minimum of 40% of appointments for each gender. Since then, the law has been changed to provide for exceptions to nominations when the gender balance is respected overall. “Yes, we need to promote women with determination and vigor because everywhere, France is still lagging behind (on that issue),” Hidalgo said.In Paris city hall right now, 47% of people in senior position are women. 836
PAUMA VALLEY (CNS) - Authorities Saturday identified a man suspected of ambushing three sheriff's deputies at his home in a rural area near Casino Pauma and sparking an hours-long standoff late Thursday.Jose Nieto, a 28-year-old Pauma Valley man, was arrested for three counts of attempted murder of a peace officer and three counts of assault of a peace officer with a firearm, San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Rich Williams said.Nieto was being held without bail, under guard at a local hospital while being treated for a gunshot wound he sustained during the standoff, and was expected to be arraigned this week.RELATED: Deputies shot at while responding to call in Pauma ValleyThe standoff began around 4:15 p.m. Thursday when deputies responded to a home in the 15600 block of Adams Drive in Pauma Valley after receiving a 911 call from a man who said he "needed help and didn't feel safe in his home." As three deputies approached the front door of the home, they were met with gunfire, Williams said. The deputies returned fire, established a perimeter around the home and called for backup, including a SWAT team.Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes and surrounding streets were shut down.Authorities spent hours trying to establish communication with the gunman, but when that was unsuccessful, the SWAT team entered the home and found the suspect inside with an apparent gunshot wound to his lower body, Williams said. It was about 10 p.m. by the time the standoff was over. 1501

Police said in a news conference Tuesday afternoon that investigators found "distractionary-type" devices in the backpack of a boy who shot himself inside Jackson Memorial Middle School near Canton, Ohio. Police said the devices were not explosives and they didn't find any devices that "would have done harm to others." Jackson Township middle school and high school students were dismissed for the day after the boy shot himself around 7:50 a.m. Authorities say the boy suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the boy's bathroom. Over the last week, Arizona's explosion in coronavirus cases has made it the No. 1 global pandemic hot spot.According to the New York Times, Arizona topped the list of states and countries with a high rate of virus spread than any other state or country. The newspaper's research, which ranks countries and states with the most new confirmed coronavirus cases over the past week -- adjusted for population -- lists Arizona No. 1, with about 3,300 cases per 1 million in population. Florida (2,700) and South Carolina (2,300) follow. Bahrain (2,200) is No. 4.In response to the ranking, a spokesperson for Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey Wednesday morning said the New York Times analysis lacks context, citing testing statistics from other countries -- including Brazil. While the testing disparities may explain differences in comparisons to other countries, Arizona is still among the states with the most new cases per capita in the U.S.Here is the full response from Ducey spokesperson Patrick Ptak:Testing - if you aren’t testing, it doesn’t mean you have fewer cases, just that you know less about them. For example, AZ has done 8,615 test per 100K. Brazil has done 1,435.Arizona has been working hard to increase testing, with more on the way.Daily Testing - In fact, Brazil is currently testing 0.025 per 100k people per day. By contrast, yesterday, Arizona reported 12,212 tests (and this was far from our highest day in the past week) which works out to 167 tests per 100K on that one day alone.Positivity rate – both Brazil (33%) and Peru (39.9%) have a higher positivity rate than Arizona. This, in combination with their much lower testing, suggests the outbreaks in these places are much larger than is being reported. Likewise, New York’s positivity rate during its peak was more than double what AZ is seeing now.None of this is to diminish the situation in Arizona – it is serious and the State is working to address it, but this reporting is misleading at best. This article was written by Phil Villarreal for KGUN. 2029
Pharmacists will be instrumental in getting the first round of COVID-19 vaccines out, especially for the most vulnerable.Walgreens and CVS have a deal with the U.S. Department of Health to go into more than 50,000 long-term care facilities. Both companies are still recruiting pharmacists, nurses and pharmacy technicians.“I am absolutely supportive of getting a vaccine and I will be the first in line when I am eligible to get one. I believe in vaccines. I believe in the science of vaccines,” said Tasha Polster, who deals with pharmacy quality, compliance and patient safety at Walgreens.Once the vaccine is more widely available, people will be able to sign up online to get the vaccine at a pharmacy location.Walgreens plans to work with communities to set up COVID-19 vaccine sites in other locations, like they do with the flu shot.“We work with churches and local community centers in underserved populations to bring the vaccine to those patients that would you know need them,” said Polster.Speaking of the flu, the pandemic has brought some encouraging news on that front.Walgreens created special map models to show what the flu season has done so far this year compared to last year. They show there’s been far less activity.Walgreens attributes that not only to COVID-19 safety precautions, but to what they call an unprecedented demand for flu shots, which you can still get. 1399
