BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Reasserting its determination to crush gang crimes, China's Ministry of Public Security released a list of 52 major cases of gang crimes across the country and said it would supervise the handling of these cases in a circular issued on Tuesday.The ministry would appoint officers to supervise and track the investigation of these cases, while at the same time providing expertise and technological support, the circular said.It specifically ordered police chiefs, in areas where the mob cases occurred, to personally lead the investigation and said they would be held accountable for the investigation.Police nationwide must strengthen cooperation with disciplined inspection and supervision departments to remove the mafia's "protective umbrellas" and root out its financial resources by confiscating all asserts related to gang crimes.This was the eighth such listing released by the ministry since a long-term national campaign to crackdown on gang crimes began in February 2006.Since then, the ministry has supervised the handling of 296 major cases of gang crimes. CHANGSHA, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Death toll from a Friday explosion in Changsha City, capital of central China's Hunan Province, has risen to four with 19 people injured, local police said.The explosion went off on the third floor of a branch of Furong District's taxation office on Hengda Road near a downtown residential block at about 4:15 p.m., according to a statement from the city's police.Initial investigations show the explosion was a planned attack, the police said.The police sealed off the building and blocked nearby roads for investigation. All the workers in the building had already evacuated before the police came.Windows of the third floor were all shattered. Large blood stains could been seen on the stairs.The injured have been sent to the hospital.In a separate case in northeast China's Jilin Province, one people was killed and 20 were injured Friday in a series of explosions in a barber's shop in provincial capital Changchun.Four fire fighters were among the injured of the explosions which first blasted at 4:46 p.m, according to a statement from the municipal government.Witnesses say four explosions hit the shop.Fire fighters and workers from a local gas supply company are working at the site. Pieces of shattered windows can be seen forty meters away.The police are investigating the cause of the explosion.

The headquarters counted retrieved bodies and asked family by family about missing people to get the numbers, which may rise as witnesses say they saw about 100 people on the bridge when it collapsed.China Central Television (CCTV) reported Tuesday night that at least 50 people died in the collapse without giving the source.The Yi River Bridge collapsed at about 5 p.m. Saturday in Luanchuan County, Luoyang City, plunging the people on it into the rushing waters, a local government spokesman said.Thousands of rescuers are still searching for missing people and possible survivors.Villagers from seven villages and soldiers have launched a massive search for survivors, said Li Guangming, deputy head of the administrative office of Luanchuan county government.The rescuers are focusing on spots that could hold people who were rushed away by torrents, such as banks with lush plants, said Qi Weiming, deputy head of Luanchuan's military office.News broke of the accident after Luanchuan's government wrote an apology which was published in Monday's Luoyang Daily, saying "we are deeply sorry for the heavy loss of life ... and we take responsibility.""The bridge was crowded with people who had come to watch flood torrents when it collapsed. And the whole bridge fell in about one or two minutes, most people on it did not manage to escape.The bridge, built in December 1987, was over 200 meters long and more than 10 meters high. It was the only bridge on a about 4-km section of the river.An initial probe shows the dilapidated bridge collapsed after fallen tree trunks became stuck under it, blocking the passage of the raging flood waters, Luoyang officials said.Officials said they were continuing the investigation and vowed to severely punish those who were to blame.The flood has damaged a local tap water plant, cutting drinking water supply to the county's residents. Transport to the county was also disrupted by the flood with some bridges and roads damaged.
