(KGTV) - The Rugby team at MiraCosta College has qualified for the National Championships in Pittsburgh.The Spartans Rugby program is in its first full competitive season, and due to the lack of Junior College teams in Southern California, they play a schedule that consists of NCAA 4-year schools.The MiraCosta Rugby team is made up of around 40 players, many of whom have backgrounds in football and wrestling.The team doesn't lack for experience, as a few players have been playing for over 10 years, like Ian Crilly, who says he's pleased with the team's progression."I've been playing for about 12 years now, so it was a little rough with these first year players. Trying to get them up to speed but we got there," said Crilly.The Spartans begin play in the National Championships on April 21, and win or lose, they feel all there success this season has put the school on the map for athletics. (KGTV) - An Oceanside man returned home to an unwelcome sight: a gay slur spray-painted across his garage door.Amid the tranquility of the Oceana South senior community, something ugly happened."I didn't expect this ... it hurts a lot," said Earls, choking back tears.For Earls, his emotions have been hard to control since he returned home on Pear Blossom Avenue past 7 p.m. Sunday. That's when he discovered a gay slur in black spray paint. Earls is openly gay."I just don't understand why people are so cruel. It just took me back to my childhood and the bullies on the playground," said Earls.The discovery was not a complete surprise. In the past few months, Earls says several neighbors have directed the same gay slur at him while walking near his home."One neighbor was muttering it quietly as she walks by. Another neighbor was the same person I saw near the garage when I discovered the slur," said Earls.Amid all the pain, something remarkable happened. After police arrived, a stranger came up to him."A man handed me an envelope, hugged me and said he loved me ... Inside was 0 and a note asking the money to be used for a reward. Shows there are good people. I have a lot of great neighbors," said Earls.Earls has told police about which neighbors have used the slurs before. On Aug. 26, 2017, 15-year-old Damon Grimes was involved in a police pursuit while driving an ATV. That pursuit ended in a crash on Detroit’s east side that claimed Grimes’ life.Using the Freedom of Information Act, 25-hours worth of video from police body cameras and dash cameras, surveillance video and cellphone video shot by witnesses were released that tell the story of the senseless death. They would not provide footage from the dash cam of the pursuit by MSP Troopers, Mark Bessner and Ethan Berger.At 5:31 p.m., the video shows Damon Grimes riding his ATV down Rossini Avenue and Gratiot in Detroit.Bessner requests priority to chase an ATV. “He flipped. Flipped!” said Detroit Police Officer Williams on the radio.“Yup, tell them there’s an accident,” said DPD Officer Boersman, who was first on the scene.Grimes hit a parked Ford F-150 with his ATV and he flew off the four-wheeler.“He’s got a pulse and he’s breathing,” said Bessner.“0-9, he’s slowed down, we tased him and he crashed out. Hell no!” said Wade.“They got lights and sirens. (KGTV) — An Oceanside officer was taken to the hospital Tuesday after a man broke a patrol vehicle's windshield, sending glass into the officer's eyes.OPD said a man known to police as a transient got into a confrontation with an officer at College Ave. and North River Rd. at about 5 p.m. The man reportedly used an object to break the windshield of the officer's vehicle, injuring the officer's eyes with glass.The officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and will reportedly be okay, according to OPD.The San Diego Sheriff's Department, Carlsbad Police, and an ASTREA helicopter helped in the search for the suspect. SDSO said just before 7 p.m. that the suspect was in custody.According to City News Service, the suspect was armed with a machete. The suspect reportedly stabbed a police dog during his arrest. (KGTV) — Heavy rains and slick roads may have contributed to a fatal motorcycle crash in Oceanside.A 22-year-old man riding a Yamaha motorcycle on northbound Interstate 5 just south of State Route 76 crashed just after 10 p.m. Friday, just as lightning, thunder, and heavy rain pounded the area, according to California Highway Patrol.The man was transitioning from NB I-5 to the SR-76 off-ramp when he veered off the side of the road and up a dirt embankment.
