SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's District Attorney's Office Wednesday says the officer who fatally shot a man who had attacked another person with a machete in Southcrest acted in self defense.After review the case and officer's actions, DA Summer Stephen's office says Officer Corey Pitts, who fired upon Vaughn Denham on Aug. 8, 2018, is not criminally liable for the shooting.Denham, 48, has reportedly attacked another person with a machete during an argument over a dog chain. Pitts eventually fired two rounds, striking Denham.Denham later died at the hospital. The Stephen's office says a toxicology report showed phencyclidine (PCP), cannabinoids, and methamphetamine in his system."Based on these circumstances, Pitts fired at Denham in his own defense," the office's review states. "He therefore bears no state criminal liability for his actions."In addition to clearing Pitts of any criminal wrongdoing, the DA's office released nearly two minutes of body camera footage from the incident. 1751

That was certainly the case in San Diego County on Halloween night, when surveillance video captured trick-or-treaters behaving badly.“Frustrating and really disappointing,” said Eastlake resident K.C. Helman.Helman returned home from trick-or-treating with his kids Thursday night to find his candy bowl gone.Video showed two costumed kids walking up to the bowl. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Six people inside a minivan that drove down a flooded road near Fashion Valley mall were rescued Friday, according to a San Diego Fire-Rescue official. Avenida del Rio, a popular exit route for the mall south of Friars Road, was closed Thursday and Friday due to rising water levels in the San Diego River. A lifeguard river rescue crew was nearby, along with fire trucks. No one was hurt, fire officials said.Police say the car was driven by a rideshare driver who had picked up five women at the mall who were all visiting from out of the country.There are barriers on the south side of Fashion Valley mall indicating the road is closed. 854

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several birds were rescued from a San Diego apartment after a downstairs unit caught fire.According to crews, the fire started around 10:45 a.m. Sunday at an apartment on the 1700 block of Oro Vista Road.Shortly after noticing smoke, residents at the complex grabbed every fire extinguisher they could get their hands on in an effort to extinguish the flames and keep the blaze from spreading to the second floor.Firefighters say no one was home at the time of the fire and several birds were rescued. 529
