SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con accused of sexually assaulting a 24-year-old woman in broad daylight on a Mission Beach street pleaded not guilty Thursday to a charge of assault with intent to commit a sex crime. Philemon Shark, 40, who has two prior convictions from Washington state for residential burglary from 2014 and 2015, faces life in prison if convicted, said San Diego County Deputy District Attorney Trisha Amador. Judge Joseph Brannigan set Shark's bail at million and ordered the defendant to have no contact with the alleged victim. Amador said all sexual assaults -- no matter what level -- are ``serious'' and taken ``exceptionally serious'' by the District Attorney's Office. ``I think part of the concern is that when an individual is attacked in broad daylight in an area where they felt safe or did not feel a threat, of course that's added concern, but our office takes all sexual assaults equally as serious,'' the prosecutor said outside court. The attack happened about 8:40 a.m. last Sunday on Bayside Lane near San Jose Lane, just off Mission Boulevard, according to San Diego Police Lt. Jason Weeden. Weeden said the victim was walking south when Shark allegedly approached her from behind, threw her to the ground and held her down while he assaulted her. The woman screamed for help, and several residents forced the man off her, the lieutenant said. When Shark tried to leave, some of the residents followed him but lost track of him, Weeden said. Then, about 45 minutes after the attack, one of the neighbors found Shark hiding in a breezeway. Shark allegedly fled but was apprehended by patrol officers and booked into jail. Weeden said Shark is from the Seattle area and was believed to have been living in San Diego for the last few months. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A registered sex offender who broke into his next-door neighbor's home, where he raped and sodomized a 3-year-old girl, pleaded guilty today to four felony charges and is facing an 85-year prison term.Francisco Diaz, 47, entered his plea to four counts of forcible lewd acts on a child, and admitted serious prior felony convictions, according to Deputy District Attorney Claudia Grasso.Sentencing is scheduled for June 17.Last summer's attack occurred the morning of Aug. 11 in the 5200 block of Maple Street in Oak Park.RELATED: Man arrested after three-year-old says she was kidnapped and touchedDiaz broke a screen and curtain rod and climbed through a window of the sleeping child's bedroom. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As the San Diego region prepares for possible cases of novel coronavirus, the Health and Human Services Agency reported Wednesday that even with six influenza-related deaths recorded last week, the flu season appears to be winding down.A total of 86 San Diego County residents have died from the flu so far this season, and of the half dozen deaths recorded last week, only one actually happened last week. All of the people who died had underlying medical conditions.That total is more than last flu season's entire toll.As of this time last year, the county had recorded 46 flu deaths. Last season's deaths totaled 77."Influenza appears to be declining, but people should continue getting vaccinated as the flu could last until April or May," said said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "The vaccine is safe and effective and the best tool we have to prevent influenza."Last week, Chairman Greg Cox, County Board of Supervisors, recommended everyone get a flu vaccine to protect themselves and their family, and reduce the potential strain on the healthcare system, which may be impacted by novel coronovirus concerns.There have been a handful of novel coronavirus cases in San Diego County and as of yet no deaths."It's important for everyone to educate themselves and their family and be prepared ...," Cox said. "It's also important for people not to panic as the risk for this new virus and the disease that it causes continues to be low."All but three of the people who have died from influenza this season had underlying medical conditions, according to the HHSA, which reported that the total number of reported cases decreased again last week to 637 -- 135 fewer cases than the previous week. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Mayor Kevin Faulconer and San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit have launched a digital marketing campaign that aims to fill more than 200 positions that are currently vacant in the department, the mayor announced Thursday.Downtown-based Loma Media will run the marketing campaign, which includes videos that will be shared on social media as well as a new recruitment website, with the goal of fully staffing the department by 2020, Faulconer said."Getting the San Diego Police Department back to full staffing of over 2,000 officers is a top priority," Nisleit said in a statement.In December 2017, the City Council approved an agreement to boost salaries for San Diego police officers through the 2020 fiscal year.Since the raises were announced, the number of officers lost to other law enforcement agencies is down 84 percent from last year, Faulconer said."The best way to keep San Diego one of the safest big cities in the country is by attracting the best and brightest recruits to the San Diego Police Department," Faulconer said in a statement. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was hospitalized in San Diego Saturday morning after being seriously injured when he laid down in front of his friend's car during an argument and was run over, authorities said Saturday.The incident occurred at 11:15 p.m. Friday in the 5800 block of Market Street in the Emerald Hills neighborhood, according to Officer John Buttle with the San Diego Police Department.The victim argued with his friend and in an attempt to get his friend's attention, he laid down in the street in front of a car the suspect was driving and was run over, Buttle said.A friend of the victim called 911 to report the incident and the suspect got out of the car and took the friend's cell phone and told the 911 operator the victim had laid down intentionally in front of his car, then the suspect drove away from the scene, said Buttle.The victim was transported to a hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries, he said.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodThe suspect's vehicle is a 2001 burgundy Mazda 4-door with California license plate number 7XNW211. 1095
