A lawsuit filed against the University of California system wants colleges to stop using SAT and ACT scores in the admissions process.The lawsuit was filed Tuesday on behalf of four students and several nonprofits. "The mere presence of the discriminatory metric of SAT and ACT scores in the UC admissions process precludes admissions officers from according proper weight to meaningful criteria, such as academic achievement and personal qualities, and requires them instead to consider criteria that act as a proxy for wealth and race and thus concentrate privilege on UC campuses."Consequently, the UC admissions process — as deliberately operated by the Regents — creates formidable barriers to access to public higher education for deserving students from low-income families, students from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, and students with disabilities. The requirement that all applicants submit SAT or ACT scores systematically and unlawfully denies talented and qualified students with less accumulated advantage a fair opportunity to pursue higher education at the UC."The University of California is the largest public university system in the U.S., with 10 campuses and more than 280,000 students.The UC system said in a statement it is disappointed by the lawsuit since its officials are already making efforts to address the concern. The College Board, which administers the SAT, was also quick to respond. A customer shot a waiter to death at a pizzeria in the Paris suburbs after being made to wait too long for a sandwich, witnesses say.The 29-year-old waiter was killed in Noisy-le-Grand, around nine miles from the center of Paris, on Friday night, the prosecutor's office in neighboring Bobigny told CNN.Witnesses say the man was angry about the length of time taken to prepare his sandwich, the prosecutor's office confirmed.Staff called police after the waiter was shot in the shoulder with a handgun, the AFP news agency reports.The gunman fled the restaurant and the waiter died at the scene. A 1,000-bed U.S. Navy hospital ship was rushed back into service to provide medical help to New York City, now the epicenter of the nation’s outbreak. The ship, USNS Comfort, is scheduled to arrive Monday at a Manhattan pier a week after its sister ship, the USNS Mercy arrived in Los Angeles to preform similar duty on the West Coast. President Donald Trump traveled to Norfolk Naval Station to see the ship off on Saturday as he aims to highlight the federal response to the pandemic. The ship has 12 operating rooms as well as radiology suites and a CT scanner. It also has ICU beds, a lab and a pharmacy. The president said 1,200 Navy medical personnel will be aboard the1,000-bed hospital ship to provide medical care. However, Trump stated the ship will not be used to house COVID-19 positive patients. Instead, it will serve to treat other life-threatening emergencies. Patients with the new coronavirus will continue to be treated at hospitals on land.Before departing the White House Saturday, Trump told reporters he has spoken with some governors and is considering some type of an enforceable quarantine to prevent people in New York and parts of New Jersey and Connecticut from traveling. Although a new trend online, it’s something nature lover Caitlin Deporter has already been doing for nearly a decade. The beauty of the outdoors is something Deporter has always cherished. "It's just grown from a young age, an appreciation for everything natural," Deporter says. She spends a lot of her time hiking near the Potomac River in Maryland. "My dad and I usually do our big hiking trips together," she says. Along those hikes, Deporter says she sees a lot of garbage. "There are a lot of beer cans and bottles, I will tell you that," she says. Americans produce more than 250 million tons of waste annually, according to the EPA. A 30-year-old Honduran man died in ICE custody Sunday in a hospital in Humble, Texas, the agency said.Yimi Alexis Balderramos-Torres entered ICE custody on June 6 and less than two weeks later was transferred to the Houston Contract Detention Facility in Houston, Texas.On June 30, he was found unresponsive in his dormitory and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, ICE said.Balderramos-Torres is the sixth detainee to die in ICE custody since October 1, 2018, the agency said. He is at least the 11th person to die in US custody since September.Balderramos-Torres entered the US illegally on May 27 and was placed in ICE custody on June 6 after a "routine traffic stop" with local law enforcement, ICE said.He had previously tried to enter the country ten days earlier and was returned to Mexico after encountering Border Patrol agents in El Paso, Texas, ICE said.Balderramos-Torres also tried to enter the US in August 2013.
