But Johnson found a way to stay in his hometown.He went from coal to coding."Going on four years later, we're still hanging in here," says Johnson, who learned coding with several other former coal workers.Johnson's story isn't unique. It seems like everywhere you go in Pikeville, people are finding ways to survive, outside of the coal.About 21 percent of mining jobs have been eliminated statewide since 2016, forcing people to explore other industries.After nine years working in the mines, resident Harvey Maynard had to look for a new career after being laid off 10 months ago. His skills brought him to baking!"Right now, it's baking donuts!” says Maynard. “Which is a huge change.”Maynard doesn’t just bake—he even decorates, too."Even as a kid I loved to draw, paint, and color,” says Maynard. “I was always very artistic."New jobs are even moving to the small eastern Kentucky city to help. A new distillery opened one month ago; the owners wanted to build there, specifically to help hire coal miners who were out of work.It was a blessing for people like Michael Preston, who after 16 years of working in the coal industry, decided to go back to school. There are new concerns about people's ability to understand information regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.Dartmouth College researchers found many health agencies are publishing coronavirus information at a 10th grade reading level.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as the American Medical Association and National Institutes of Health say information should not be published at more than an 8th grade reading level.Researchers say it could lead to more people missing information.“If high quality information, in terms of content, like with the CDC, WHO and other official organizations put out, if that is difficult to access, difficult to understand, then that does create a potential or an incentive for looking at less trustworthy sources,” said Joseph Dexter, Neukom Fellow at Dartmouth College.Researchers say health agencies need to use short and direct sentences when writing health information. They should also use short paragraphs, avoiding jargon and technical terms.It's also important to think about how information can be presented visually on a screen.Right now, it's not required that states follow these guidelines, but it is highly recommended. 1192

A watchdog group says it has found asbestos in several products, sold in a store targeted to teens and young girls. What do you think of when you hear the word asbestos?“I think of like commercials like where your loved one has been exposed to asbestos and you die,” one woman says. “I'm like, 'Oh my God,' it's terrible.”Another woman said, “Like in a house that's like shut down forever” she says. “There's asbestos in a house.”You don't usually think of makeup.Danny Katz with U.S. PIRG, a consumer watchdog group said it tested more than a dozen make up products and found "high levels of asbestos" in three. They're all sold at Claire's, a store with products aimed toward girls and young women.“It's completely unacceptable to have asbestos in these products,” Katz says. “Asbestos if you inhale it or ingested it can lead to lung cancer it can lead to mesothelioma, which is cancer of the internal organs, and if you apply it over skin over time it can also increase the risk of skin cancer."Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that can be found in talc, a common product in many makeup products. But Katz says it's a company's responsibility to make sure the talc it uses hasn't been contaminated.“We need Claire's to remove these products from the shelves and we need them to figure out how asbestos got in their products to begin with,” Katz says. “We need Congress and the FDA to take action. We need to ban asbestos from beauty care products and makeup.”Right now, Katz and U.S. PIRG are urging us to avoid products with talc until federal laws change.It's not the first time Claire's has come under scrutiny for this.
