House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte has issued subpoenas for former FBI Director James Comey and former Attorney General Loretta Lynch.Goodlatte, a Virginia Republican who is retiring, is requesting private depositions from Comey on December 3 and Lynch on December 4. House Republicans have been investigating FBI actions in the 2016 campaign, but that probe will end when Democrats take over the committee in January.Comey, who has previously rejected the committee's request for him to appear privately before the GOP-led inquiry, reiterated his position soon after the subpoenas became public."Happy Thanksgiving. Got a subpoena from House Republicans. I'm still happy to sit in the light and answer all questions. But I will resist a 'closed door' thing because I've seen enough of their selective leaking and distortion. Let's have a hearing and invite everyone to see," Comey tweeted.David Kelly, an attorney for Comey, said Thursday that his client will fight the order in court."While the authority for congressional subpoenas is broad, it does not cover the right to misuse closed hearings as a political stunt to promote political as opposed to legislative agendas," Kelly said.Lynch has not yet commented publicly about the subpoenas. After the House Judiciary Committee signaled earlier this month their intention to subpoena Comey and Lynch, Rep. Jerry Nadler, the Democrat who is expected to chair the panel next year, criticized the move as "unfortunate.""Months ago, Director Comey and Attorney General Lynch both indicated their willingness to answer the Chairman's questions voluntarily. My understanding is that the Republicans have had no contact with either the director or the attorney general since," Nadler said last week.Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein remains another potential witness hanging over the GOP-led investigation. Conservatives on the panels demanded that Rosenstein appear to answer their questions about his reported remarks about wearing a wire to record the President and efforts to recruit Cabinet members to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office. A scheduled meeting with Rosenstein last month was postponed and has not been rescheduled. 2215
If you've ever had a surgical procedure, you know it can often mean a high hospital bill. Now, more people are turning to surgery centers for a lower cost.Sandi Bowen is one of those people.Something as simple as picking out a shirt is more challenging for Bowen than she ever thought it'd be. On Easter, she found a lump in her breast. Doctors told her it was cancer."It was very very very confusing," Bowen says. "It still is. It brings tears to my eyes, because I don't understand how I got it."Instead of a lumpectomy, she decided to remove her entire breast. And instead of going to a hospital for breast reconstruction, Bowen opted for the Kaiser Permanente Ambulatory Surgery Center, where she got the surgery. In less than 24 hours, she was back home recovering. "I felt very special," Bowen says. "They were there every time I moved. They came in and talked to me, even goofed around with me."Dr. Mike Sawyer, the director at the center, says they've worked hard to address concerns regarding patient care."If it's a patient that just needs physicians to kind of come to the bedside, and maybe we have to have some kind of intervention, we're able to do that because are here and we are present," Dr. Sawyer says. "On site, as they say. If it's really something that requires a higher level of care, that again allows us to do a pretty quick transfer process over to one of our partner hospitals."Compared with hospitals, Kaiser Permanente says its patients are seeing an average cost savings of 30 percent on their procedures. It can be anything from simple orthopedic procedure to joint procedures. However, Dr. Sawyer says there are important questions you need to ask before determining if a surgery center is the best option for you."Does your physician feel comfortable with this operation there?" Dr. Sawyer says. "Have you and your physician discussed all the ramifications of that procedure? And then what sort of plans does that ambulatory surgery center have if you were required a higher level of care?" 2037
IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) -- It appears the “Don Juan” thief one woman says loves stealing from women on first dates is a wanted man.Last Friday, 10news recounted Elizabeth’s so-called “date from hell.” Elizabeth, 23, says the man is a good-looking guy in his late 20s who was a Facebook friend for two years. They had mutual friends in common but had never met. RELATED: 'Don Juan' thief targeting women, some on first datesHe messaged her recently, asking her out to a sushi lunch. She agreed, but during the drive, she says he fidgeted with his blinkers and asked her to exit the SUV to make sure they were working. She agreed, and that's when he took off, with her purse, wallet, and sunglasses. When she posted his photo on Facebook, she says she got a flood of responses: dozens of other women with similar stories of theft."One woman said, 'He told me he had a gift for me in the trunk, and as soon as I got out, he drove off with my purse and several hundred dollars,'" Elizabeth recalls. She says none of the women called police because the man told them he had friends in a cartel. But apparently at least one woman did. Sources tell 10news an arrest warrant has recently been issued for him after a different local woman accused him of stealing money and other property valued at more than 0.10news has also learned the man pleaded guilty in 2015 to embezzling from his employer - Walmart - and received a sentence of three years probation.10new has not identified the man in Elizabeth’s case because detectives haven’t officially confirmed he is the wanted man.If you have any information, please call San Diego Police at (619) 531-2000. 1700
If you've been hearing the disembodied voice of a laughing young woman or child in your home lately, there's (probably) no need to call a ghost hunter.According to The Verge, Amazon confirmed on Wednesday that "Alexa," the voice of Echo smart speakers, may cackle unprompted from time to time.In a statement to Scripps National, an Amazon spokesperson confirmed that the company is changing how to make Alexa laugh. "In rare circumstances, Alexa can mistakenly hear the phrase 'Alexa, laugh,'" Amazon said. "We are changing that phrase to be 'Alexa, can you laugh?' Which is less likely to have false positives, and we are disabling the short utterance 'Alexa, laugh.' We are also changing Alexa’s response from simply laughter to 'Sure, I can laugh' followed by laughter."A number of users caught Alexa's laughter on video and posted the clips on social media, saying the laughter appeared to be unprompted, often coming in the middle of the night. So Alexa decided to laugh randomly while I was in the kitchen. Freaked @SnootyJuicer and I out. I thought a kid was laughing behind me. pic.twitter.com/6dblzkiQHp— CaptHandlebar (@CaptHandlebar) February 23, 2018 1200
