SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The sticker-shock of college can be daunting, but with planning and some research there is financial aid out there for the taking.To get the process started families must fill out the Free Application for Student Aid, better known as the FAFSA.The FAFSA is roughly 156 questions and looks at a family's financial situation.Colleges nationwide use the FAFSA to determine the amount of financial aid to award to students,The form can now be filled out online but college planning expert Ron Caruthers also recommends printing a paper copy for reference because it contains more guidance.“It’s my bread and butter because so many families really make mistakes and don’t understand the process," said Caruthers. "I’ve worked for 25+ years helping families pick schools that have money, not make mistakes on the FAFSA and save a ton of money on college.”Families can start submitting FAFSA’s October 1 and the deadline is March 2.Caruthers recommends doing so by January.He says a major mistake families make is listing assets they're not required to, including their home, IRA's, and personal property.What you should list: cash, stocks and bonds that aren't in a retirement account, and equity in a rental home.“This is an area of enormous stress because, for a lot of families, next to their house this is going to be their biggest investment, and it's going to come in a very short period of time, unlike a house they can pay off over 30 years,” said Caruthers.He says it's important to be detail-oriented on the FAFSA, for example, making sure you put income in the right line. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Three years ago Former San Francisco 49er’s quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand during the National Anthem. It started during the 2016 preseason games. The first three games he sat on the bench and then in a game against the San Diego Chargers, he took his first knee during the National Anthem. On Wednesday, Kaepernick recognized the three year anniversary by taking to his Twitter account saying, “Today marks the three year anniversary of the first time I protested systemic oppression. I continue to work and stand with the people in our fight for liberation.” In October 2017, Kaepernick filed a Collusion Grievance against the NFL and team owners In February 2018, they settled the case. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The San Diego County jail system is being blamed after a part of a former inmate’s cheek was bitten off by another inmate who was mentally ill.10News was at Thursday afternoon’s press conference where their families accused the jail system of failing to provide adequate mental health resources. “I felt unprotected,” says Miguel Lucas. Lucas now has a scar running across his cheek. It comes after he says part of his face was bitten in an unprovoked attack by inmate Reginald Harmon. It happened in June at the Central Jail.Harmon is still behind bars, but now family members and supporters of both men are coming together to say the jail system that's run by the San Diego County sheriff's Department needs reform. “I was sick to my stomach and I was very upset with the jail,” says Harmon’s mother, Alicia Muhammad. She says that days before he got jailed, she made repeated calls to the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT) hoping for intervention, but each time he was discharged. After being arrested for suspected DUI, she says she warned the jail. “I spoke with the lady at the front desk and advised her that my son had mental issues and she said, ‘Okay.’ She would let the guards know,” she adds.However, she says her son wasn't placed into a mental health unit. Even after he reportedly attacked a different inmate, the families say he was placed in a lower security unit and neglected by mental health providers for two days, until he attacked Lucas. “It’s just unfortunate that people had to go through what I went through and what people are still going through to this day,” says Lucas. Following the attack, the families of both men connected and found a friendship. Currently, Lucas is living with Harmon’s aunt and attends church with the Harmon’s family. Lucas did not want to press charges, expressing that he knew Harmon was having mental health issues at the time of the attack.The families plan to file a civil lawsuit against the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department in the next few months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The place where an 87-year-old woman was hit and killed by a FedEx truck, is now covered with candles, flowers, and messages from loved ones.Mary Francel was a mother to eight and grandmother to dozens more.She was walking back from church and crossing a driveway on Balboa Avenue near Mount Albertine Avenue when the FedEx truck hit her. The driver immediately stopped after the crash."She was very much well-loved and she put all of us first at all times, it was never about her," said Joey Villegas, one of Francel's grandchildren. "I wrote her and told her thank you, for how much she taught us. Me and my brother, she basically helped raise us when we were young."Villegas says his grandma loved bingo, drove a big truck and was incredibly devoted to her family and friends.At this time the driver has not been arrested or cited for the accident.   890
