SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Four Democrats running to be governor of California faced off in a debate in San Diego Thursday night.The San Diego County Democratic Party hosted the debate between John Chaing, Delaine Eastin, Gavin Newsom and Antonio Villaraigosa.The Democratic Convention is set to begin Friday. The candidates were asked a wide range of questions from fixing the tax system to housing and small business.A topic that led the charge was the topic of gun control. All candidates said they support stricter gun laws.A poll released two weeks ago shows Newsom leading Villaraigosa 23 to 21 percent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Health experts are weighing in after a local nurse tested positive for COVID-19 more than a week after receiving the Pfizer vaccine.In a Facebook message posted on December 18, Matthew W., an ER nurse at at two different local hospitals, talked about receiving the Pfizer vaccine that day. He told ABC 10News his arm was sore for a day but he suffered no other side effects.Six days later on Christmas Eve -- after working a shift in the COVID-19 unit -- he became sick. He got the chills and later came down with muscle aches and fatigue.The day after Christmas, he went to a drive-up hospital testing site and tested positive for COVID-19."It's not unexpected at all. If you work through the numbers, this is exactly what we’d expect to happen if someone was exposed," said Dr. Christian Ramers, an infectious disease specialist with Family Health Centers of San Diego. He serves on the clinical advisory panel for the county’s vaccine rollout.He points out, it is possible Matthew was infected before receiving the vaccine, as the incubation period may be as much as two weeks. Dr. Ramers says if Matthew did contract it after the vaccine, it’s still in line with what we know."We know from the vaccine clinical trials that it’s going to take about 10 to 14 days for you to start to develop protection from the vaccine," said Dr. Ramers.Dr. Ramers says he knows of several other local cases where health care workers became infected around the time they received the vaccine. He says all the cases illustrate the fact that results aren’t immediate. Even after you start receiving some protection, it won't be full protection."That first dose we think gives you somewhere around 50%, and you need that second dose to get up to 95%," said Dr. Ramers.Dr. Ramers says Matthew’s story also shows that even with vaccines, the pandemic isn’t going to turn around instantly."You hear heath practitioners being very optimistic about it being the beginning of the end, but it’s going to be a slow roll, weeks to months as we roll out the vaccine," said Dr. Ramers.He adds this case is a good reminder of why masks, handwashing, and other COVID protocols are important, even after receiving the vaccine.Matthew says he’s feeling better since his symptoms peaked on Christmas Day but still feels fatigued. 2323

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Eldahmy Wellness Pharmacy just received a shipment of test strip kits that can detect signs of COVID-19 in the blood."I usually compare it to the blood glucose machine," said Ahmed Eldahmy, an advanced practice pharmacist who owns Eldahmy Wellness Pharmacy's two locations in La Jolla and Barrio Logan. "Hopefully in the future this point-of-care testing will be available in every doctor's office, clinic, pharmacy."The kits are allowed by the FDA for Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) as of March 31, 2020. Although he could not yet tell us the name of the company creating the kits, Eldahmy showed them to us and explained how they work to detect if signs of COVID-19 are present in the blood.RELATED: San Diego company gets FDA approval for 30-minute COVID-19 test"These are basically the antibodies that our test is trying to detect," Eldahmy explained while holding the test during a Skype interview. "We take a drop of blood and we put it in this spot at the bottom of the test. This is how we can figure out if the blood sample has the antibody component or not."He said it only takes moments to receive results."You leave it for about 5 to 10 minutes and it will tell you if it's positive or negative," he explained. "There’s only a one or two percent chance that it might not be accurate."RELATED: FDA warns of fake coronavirus home test kitsPeople must fill out a pre-screening questionnaire before receiving the test which asks if they've recently traveled to an area with known spread of COVID-19, if they've come in close contact with someone who tested positive in the last 14 days, if they have a fever greater than 100.4 or lower respiratory illnesses like cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and if they work as a first responder or healthcare worker.The answers will determine if one qualifies for the test."We can send it to a patient in their homes they can do it or we can do it here in our location," said Eldahmy. "We’d rather do it at our location in order to give patients a little bit of guidance or direction. Testing sites will be set up at both pharmacies."We’ll do one day in Barrio Logan and the next day in La Jolla and we will alternate," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Federal indictments were unsealed Thursday charging 75 people nationwide, 40 in San Diego, with involvement in an international money-laundering scheme.Prosecutors said those charged have been involved with crimes ranging from drug distribution to money laundering.Investigators seized more than million, 95 kilograms of methamphetamine, 63 kilograms of heroin, 10 kilograms of fentanyl, 92 kilograms of cocaine, 252 kilograms of marijuana, and 20 firearms, including semiautomatic assault rifles and handguns.RELATED: Ex-MLB pitcher Esteban Loaiza now faces federal drug charge"We have siphoned the cash and the life out of a San Diego-based international money laundering organization with ties to the Sinaloa Cartel," U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of Clairemont neighbors attended a public hearing Wednesday to learn why their neighborhood was picked for a new homeless housing project.A developer wants to convert former office space on 5858 Mt. Alifan Drive into roughly 50 apartments for the homeless. The location is near the Vons shopping plaza.“It’s just not acceptable. I’m not against homeless shelters by any means but this is not the proper location,” said Mark Bromley. He believes the site is too close to homes and schools.San Diego City Councilman Chris Cate said the developer has not yet applied for a permit to start the project. Cate told 10News he can’t give his opinion on the project in case the issue goes before the Council.Organizers shut down the planned open house after more than 200 people attended due to possible fire code violations given the size of the crowd.Another informational meeting is tentatively scheduled for next Tuesday at a larger location. 973
