SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Marine Corps reported an E.coli outbreak Tuesday among more than 300 troops at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego.The diarrheal illness has affected 302 of approximately 5,500 recruits at the base. Jorge Gonzales was arrested on November 12 for financial elder abuse by a caregiver, identity theft, grand theft and forgery. According to police, Gonzales is the executive director of the Golden Living Senior Home on the 3200 block of Duke Street. Police say Gonzales defrauded three residents of approximately 9,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The Fleet Science Center is offering a program that helps San Diego students navigate their way through any challenges they face while distance learning.Participating students will have to go through a health screening before entering the building at Balboa Park.Once inside, classrooms are transformed into individual hubs. Students each have a workspace where they use their own electronic device to connect to their distance learning classrooms. Educators are there helping with any issues that may come up.Andia Pebdani, the Youth Engagement Manager for the Fleet Science Center, said the idea of the hubs came from families who needed help juggling the work life with schools being closed.“Some families don’t have the option at home, or it’s like, ‘I needed to do this so I can do my job, but I can also make sure my student is on the computer,’” said Pebdani.During breaks, educators work on different science activities with the kids or they get tours of different parts of their museum since their doors are still closed to the public.The cost for this program is 0-0 a week depending on whether you have a membership with the center. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The family of 19-year-old Dylan Hernandez, the San Diego State University (SDSU) freshman who died after falling off a bunk bed last November, say they are concerned about the investigation conducted by Campus Police and the University. The family believes the University Police Department is not pursuing certain angles, including a possible cover-up.Last November, Dylan Hernandez died after attending a Phi Gamma Delta fraternity party. In police reports obtained by the San Diego Union-Tribune, the freshman made it back to his dorm room around midnight. On the morning of Nov. 7, 2019, he fell off the top bunk bed and hit his head. An autopsy concluded that Hernandez had fractured his skull, suffering from a brain bleed that ultimately led to his accidental death. Reports also state that his blood-alcohol level was about 0.23, nearly three times the legal limit. "The Hernandez family is concerned because witnesses they provided to SDSU and UPD still have not been questioned," George Kindley, Hernandez family lawyer, said. The same University Police reports state that UPD never interviewed anybody from the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. They also never sought out search warrants for Snapchat videos or phone records, despite knowing that some fraternity brothers instructed others to delete possibly incriminating videos and messages. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The County of San Diego is changing who can get a COVID-19 test at county sites.Officials said Monday that going forward, the county is focusing coronavirus testing efforts for priority groups, including those with symptoms."For new appointments being made, those will be focused on individuals who are symptomatic or individuals who are asymptomatic that fit into some of our priority groups like healthcare workers, first responders, those with chronic or underlying health conditions and those living in long-term care facilities," said County of San Diego Supervisor Nathan Fletcher.Fletcher said the county has more sick people and more positive cases, which means there's a greater demand on the testing system.He explained that challenge is being compounded by a global supply chain shortage with testing supplies and components."By taking this approach to reprioritize our focus on symptomatic folks and asymptomatic folks who are in the settings I just described we might see a reduction in the number of tests being done, but we do hope to see an increase in the speed in which we're able to turn around those tests," Fletcher said.Testing supply issues are not just a local problem. On Monday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom was asked about supply issues and test result turnaround times."It's unacceptable in this nation and in this state that we are not in a position to be doing even larger scale testing that all of us have been very, very aggressively promoting and trying to manifest," Newsom said, adding that the state is also starting to see delays in testing results.Harvard researchers have said the timing of testing results is crucial."If it takes over a week for the result to come back, mathematically it becomes challenging for testing and contract tracing alone to be adequate," Dr. Thomas Tsai, assistant professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at Harvard T.H.
