PYONGYANG, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- The government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) held a grand banquet here on Sunday to mark the 60th anniversary of the entry of the Chinese People's Volunteers (CPV) into the Korean front.Premier Choe Yong Rim of the DPRK's cabinet and Vice Chairman Guo Boxiong of China's Central Military Commission joined CPV veterans and hundreds of others on the occasion on the eve of the Monday anniversary. The CPV fought alongside Korean army and people during the war, helped the DPRK win liberation, and defended regional and global peace, said Yang Hyong Sop, vice-president of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly. He conveyed, on behalf of his country, warm greetings to CPV veterans as well as the Chinese army and people, adding that the DPRK is committed to enhancing its traditional friendship with China and passing it from generation to generation. In his address, Chinese ambassador Liu Hongcai recalled the profound friendship forged on the battlefields between the two peoples and two armies, saying their heroic feats contributed to upholding justice and opposing power politics, and their victory belongs to all peace-loving people across the world.China will always remember all those who had given their lives for peace and make concerted efforts with the DPRK to promote regional and global peace and development, he added. Before the banquet, Chinese delegates watched an adapted Chinese opera masterpiece performed by DPRK artists.

BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- China's central government will, for the first time, reserve vacancies for farmers and workers in this year's nationwide civil service exams. The announcement was made on Wednesday by the State Administration of Civil Service (SACS), which is in charge of recruiting central government employees.Millions of farmers living in the country's rural areas were not allowed to take the exam selecting central government officials until 2006, when the restriction of household registration, or hukou, was lifted.According to the administration, those reserved vacancies will be allocated among departments of the customs, state taxation and railway police at country-level or below. The SACS posted a notice for the exams on its website, but did not specify the number of reserved vacancies. The central government plans to recruit more than 16,000 public servants in 2011, 1,000 more than in 2010. About 85 percent of the vacancies require at least two-years grassroots work experience, up 15 percentage points from the previous year. The SACS also revealed that 100 positions were specially created for college graduates who had served in villages to encourage more college students to work in rural regions after graduation.Registration for this year's exams will start on Friday.

BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang said here Monday China would continue to crack down on terrorists and criminals targeting civil aviation.Zhang made the remarks when addressing the opening ceremony of an international conference on air law.The conference will review draft amendments to international conventions on aviation security.Zhang said as a responsible country, China firmly supports international efforts to combat terrorism and will continue to meet its international obligations in the field of civil aviation.Zhang said he hoped delegates could discuss ways to improve international air criminal law.He also expressed hope for the criminalization of unlawful interference that threatens aviation security."We need to send a clear message to the international community and to terrorist groups - any unlawful interfering in civil aviation is intolerable," said Roberto Kobeh Gonzalez, president of the Council for the International Civil Aviation Organization, at the conference.According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), during the twelve-day conference, delegates from over 60 countries will examine international law concerning aviation security, including the Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against the Safety of Civil Aviation and the Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Seizure of Aircraft.

SHANGHAI, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin on Friday called for broader and deeper exchanges between the mainland and Taiwan, and stressed the role of cultural exchanges.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remarks in Shanghai at a forum of social groups of Taiwan compatriots.Historic changes have been achieved in cross-Strait relations in recent years along with a series of positive results, and a favorable situation of peaceful development has emerged, Jia said.He said the fields of exchanges should be expanded to promote cross-Strait exchanges. He welcomed more Taiwan compatriots to visit the Chinese mainland in the future to enhance their understanding of the mainland's social and economic development, and encouraged more mainlanders to travel to Taiwan, especially to the central and southern parts of the island. He also hoped that compatriots home and abroad would participate and promote cross-Strait exchanges and benefit from them. The top political advisor also said cultural exchanges must be enhanced. Both sides across the Strait should work together to promote the Chinese culture and increase its influence.Lien Chan, honorary chairman of the Kuomintang Party (KMT), said at the forum that it was not easy to achieve the current peaceful, stable and rapidly developing state of cross-Strait relations. He urged both sides to cherish such a historic opportunity and lay the groundwork for peace, prosperity and sustainable development across the Strait.

HANGZHOU, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- He Hongwei, a college graduate living in central eastern China's Zhejiang Province, five years ago fussed over landing a decent job amid red-hot competition in the world' s most crowded job market. He then began selling novelty toys on the Internet. Five years on, he has grown into a billionaire and today is busy seeking employees to work in his own factory."I never thought I would make my fortune on the Internet, starting from scratch," the 35-year-old He said.Several years ago, e-shopping was only a "shelter" for many young Chinese who turned to the Internet marketplace to make their living after failing to find decent jobs offline. Most of them earned only paper-thin profits, as e-commerce in China then was still in its infancy. He's story, however, reflected a trend that e-business in China was no longer merely a way of survival, but has become an incubator for the newly-rich who had not expected they could make their fortunes online.According to a report released by Alibaba.com earlier this month, China's largest Nasdaq-listed e-commerce company, some 77 million Chinese individuals and businesses have opened E-shops as of the end of this June.Further, the number of e-shoppers has reached 142 million, or one-third of the nation's total online population.Retail sales at e-shops more than tripled between 2007 and 2009, much faster than the 18 percent growth of retail sales in general during the same period. In the first half of this year, retail sales of e-businesses more than doubled to 211.8 billion yuan (31.6 billion U.S. dollars).Booming sales helped entrepreneurs with e-business start-ups live decent lives, as more than 1 million e-shops at Taobao.com, China's largest online marketplace, earn profits of at least 2,000 yuan a month. As their businesses grow larger, more shops reported profits of over 10 million yuan a year. Sheng Zhenzhong, senior analyst with the research center of Taobao.com, declined to disclose how many such shops were listed on Taobao, but said the number is steadily rising.INTEGRITYAs an old Chinese saying goes, free traders are not bad, which means businessmen should cheat to stay competitive. The old tenet used to work in the early 1980s' when the market economy was initially practiced in China and many businessmen profited from selling shoddy goods. But that could hardly be the case in today's online market, as integrity has become the most important traits for the Internet's commercial success in China.Shi Hongwei is a wholesaler of stockings at Taobao.com. He sells more than 2,000 pairs of socks everyday. For Shi, a young e-shop owner, this is quite a big deal. But, what he cares about most is the rating feedback from his customers.
