WUHAN, March 26 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday started building a canal from the middle section of the Yangtze River to a tributary that connects with China's South-North Water Diversion project.Costing more than six billion yuan (880 million U.S. dollars), the 67.23 km project will divert 3.1 billion cubic meters of water every year from Yangtze's Jingjiang section to the Hanjiang River, one of the major sources of water for north China once the diversion project is complete.China's South-North Water Diversion project is designed to divert water from the water-rich south to the dry north. The central part of the project will divert water from Danjiangkou Reservoir on the Hanjiang River to north China cities like Beijing and Tianjin.According to research by Hubei provincial environmental protection bureau, without water from the canal the Hanjiang River would only have one third of its average runoff once water is diverted, and the water level of middle and lower reaches of Hanjiang would drop by 0.5 meter. The canal, which will be completed in 2014, will prevent problems arising such as algae pollution if water levels were decreased dramatically, said Shen Xiaoli, an engineer with the Hubei Environmental Sciences Institute. The canal is expected to benefit about 8.9 million people and 43,000 hectares of farmland in the lower reaches of Hanjiang.Once completed the five to six meters deep canal could be used by ships weighing more than 1,000 tonnes, facilitating transportation of coal from the north to the south, said Xu Shaojun, head of the Hubei Provincial Investigation and Design Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower.

BEIJING, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and Indian presidents Thursday agreed that the two Asian countries should further develop partnership and cooperation for mutual benefits as well as regional and global peace and development.Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Indian counterpart Pratibha Devisingh Patil held talks in Beijing Thursday afternoon. Patil arrived in Beijing Wednesday for a six-day state visit to China, the first of its kind over the past decade.Hu said expanding the strategic partnership of cooperation between China and India conformed with fundamental interests of both countries and their people and was conducive to peace, stability and development of the region and the world. He said leaders of the two countries should have frequent meetings and negotiation to enhance mutual trust, for which governments, legislatures and political parties should also play a role. Chinese President Hu Jintao (L) and Indian President Pratibha Patil inspect a guard of honor during a welcoming ceremony held for Patil in Beijing, capital of China, May 27, 2010.President Patil said India-China relations were of global and strategic significance, and all political parties in India were supportive of further advancing such relations. On trade and economic cooperation, Hu urged the two countries to push forward cooperation in fields including finance, agriculture, science, technology, forest and environmental protection. The two countries should create a more flexible environment for each other's companies to make investment and undertake construction contracts, he said. Both countries must adhere to the principles of openness and mutual benefit while opposing protectionism in any form, he said.Describing trade and economic cooperation as a pillar of bilateral ties, Patil said India and China should work together to realize trade target that had been set.Hu said China and India should work more closely to address global issues such as economic downturn, climate change, energy security and food security. The two countries should maintain close communication and coordination within multilateral mechanisms such as China-Russia-India, BRIC, BASIC, and G20, in a bid to increase the voice of developing countries, Hu said.Patil said India was ready to strengthen cooperation with China to address the global issues and safeguard the interests of developing countries. Both presidents agreed that the two neighbors should step up people-to-people exchanges in the areas of culture, education, media, youth and non-government sectors.Celebrations such as "China Festival" in India and "India Festival" in China would be held this year to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. After the talks, the presidents witnessed the signing of a number of cooperative documents in the areas of tourism, human resources and sports.President Patil also met with top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao Thursday.Besides Beijing, she will visit Luoyang City in central China's Henan Province and will attend the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai.

BEIJING, June 4 (Xinhua) -- China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the top economic planner, refuted a report on Friday claiming China is facing stagflation risks, arguing the national economic growth might slow slightly but stagflation is not going to occur. The NDRC response followed the release of a domestic report that claimed rising inflation and slowing economic growth would lead to stagflation in China. The NDRC added that the report was inaccurate and likely to cause misunderstandings and confusion, according to a statement released on its website. The statement went on to say growth in China's gross domestic product (GDP) was likely to slow down this year because of a higher comparison base used in the second half of last year, but it would still be one of the world's strongest growth rates and should not be labeled as "stagflation".Further, the NDRC noted that the consumer price index (CPI), a major gauge of China's inflation, was likely to exceed the government's 3-percent growth target in several months, but "there is a foundation to achieve the full-year CPI target of 3 percent" as long as China continued improving macro-regulations, it said. The NDRC statement noted that China would see "stable and comparatively fast economic growth" and "a moderate consumer price increase" this year.China's GDP rose 11.9 percent from a year earlier during the first quarter of this year. The CPI increased 2.4 percent year on year in March while the growth for April accelerated to 2.8 percent, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).The NBS is scheduled to release May economic data, including the CPI, fixed asset investment and retail sales, on June 11.

BEIJING, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese had donated 4.2 billion yuan (615 million U.S. dollars) in money and materials for quake-hit Yushu by Saturday, said a statement on the website of the Ministry of Civil Affairs. The donations included 3.51 billion yuan, and quake-relief materials worth 681 million yuan. The post said 604 million yuan, including 56 million yuan and materials worth 548 million yuan, had been channeled to the quake zone. Chinese armed police soldiers help local residents to excavate usable things in quake-hit Yushu County, northwest China's Qinghai Province, May 1, 2010.
