SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dozens of women gun owners joined in solidarity Friday for the launch of #NotMeSD.It was created by San Diego County Gun Owners (SDCGO), a political action committee promoting Second Amendment rights.The initiative aims to empower women with knowledge and choice. The group believes one way to prevent domestic violence and sexual assault is with guns. “We will stand beside you, we will help you, and if you want to look at owning a gun or just coming out shooting at the range to just feel some empowerment, we're willing to stand right next to you and say how can we help?" said Jill Barto, a SDCGO member.At the gathering, Barto shared her traumatic story of being sexually assaulted. "It’s still kind of emotional, but at age 14 I was raped, I was date raped by a boyfriend, it really took a toll on me. I ended up getting pregnant from the rape, and I had my child and raised him, he’s now 37-years-old," said Barto. She was lucky to find a strong support group, one of them today being SDCGO.“It gave me a voice, it gave me a voice to say this is what happened to me and I’m not going to be ashamed of it.”The group has a three-step approach for women considering gun ownership:Get free advice about firearms from women gun owners in SDCGOGet referrals to gun shops for discounts and receive help filling out paperworkReceive help applying for a concealed carry weapon permit“It doesn’t mean they're going to buy a gun, it doesn’t mean they’re going be CCW holders, but that’s their choice, and we’re here to support them on their choice," said Barto.However, some believe guns involved in domestic violence situations do more harm than good.Carol Landale is with San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention. She supports a woman's right to arm herself but has concerns with the #NotMeSD message."The statistics show that when there is a gun in the home women are five times more likely to be killed with that gun, especially in domestic violence situations," said Landale. She says if a woman is going to purchase a gun, they must be extremely careful with how they store it. She also believes a lot of training is necessary to be proficient, especially in a high-stress situation.“If you’re going to be using a firearm you need to be practicing all the time. The police practice all the time, the military practices all the time, for somebody just to have a gun stored in a bedside table, who may have shot it once at a firing range, it doesn't seem like a sensible way to be able to protect yourself."Landale believes the decision to purchase a gun and use it, can have consequences.“I think the most important thing is to recognize that responsibility and to make sure you’re going to be willing to use a deadly weapon to kill somebody, that’s huge," said Landale. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fed up homeowners' associations are now turning to a local licensed private investigator for help with catching homeowners who are breaking HOA rules by renting out their homes on short-term vacation rental sites such as Airbnb, VRBO and Craigslist.  “I admittedly watched a lot of Magnum, P. I. growing up,” jokes Nick Bradley of San Diego’s Bradley Investigative Services.  In the last 6 months, Bradley has taken on a new field of investigative work. He and his associates are being hired by HOAs to investigate homeowners and tenants who are violating HOA bylaws and CC&Rs that prohibit turning units into short-term vacation rentals.   Bradley gave 10News an exclusive interview about this new area of detective work. He declined to offer us specifics about how he executes his investigations into short-term rental violators. We ask, “Do you ever pose as a guest and do you do surveillance work?” Bradley replies, “No comment.” “My initial thought was [to laugh],” says San Diego attorney Dan Zimberoff. He represents homeowners and has previously represented HOAs. Zimberoff thinks it’s an extreme measure for HOAs to hire private investigators, but he understands why there’s so much passion over short-term rentals. “I think what makes this issue a little different [from others] is the dollars at stake, especially in San Diego. Some of these units can go for multiple hundreds of dollars a night or thousands of dollars. People care,” he adds.  According to Airbnb, San Diego is the second ranking city in the state for Airbnb guests, after Los Angeles. Per Airbnb, in 2017 there were 537,000 guest arrivals in San Diego, generating 0 million in host income. “Right now, it’s too lucrative for [homeowners] to not do this,” says Bradley. The short-term rental fight in America’s finest city continues to be ugly. The city attorney has deemed short-term rentals illegal, per code. Meanwhile, the city council is delaying discussions over how to regulate them. Even so, certain HOAs have rules prohibiting them. The fines for violators can be astronomical. “It’s been ,000 per occurrence in some situations,” adds Bradley. If fines don’t work, court is another option. In 2012, The Mark condominium owners association filed a lawsuit against Thomas Stevens, a former condo owner, accusing him of violating the association’s policies about short-term rentals. He then had to pay out more than 0,000 after a judge ruled that he violated The Mark’s policies.  Bradley can help gather the evidence that HOAs need to litigate. “When [HOAs] go to court, my documentation and reporting will basically count as expert witness testimony for our side,” he says.  Zimberoff thinks it’s time for HOAs to consider allowing short-term rentals, but with reasonable and efficient regulations to curb nuisances, like excessive partying. “Instead of spending that energy trying to catch [a homeowner], let’s try to think of a long-term fix,” he adds. For more information about Bradley Investigative Services click here.For more information about Dan Zimberoff click here. 3193

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Faith and community leaders and former gang members from across San Diego are calling on gangs to agree to “A Season of Peace.”They're asking for no gunfire from Thanksgiving (Nov. 26) through January 1, 2021.With the coronavirus disrupting traditional violence intervention efforts, there has been a rise in gang and gun violence. According to SANDAG's 2019 report on homicides in the San Diego region, a firearm was used in 55% of homicides. Also, firearms were used 100% of the time in gang-involved homicides. Compared to mid-year 2019, there were a greater number of homicides -- 37% increase -- reported to law enforcement in the San Diego region from January to June of 2020. Since SANDAG reported on homicides for that time period, gun violence and homicides continue to rise.During the Season of Peace campaign, community leaders will lead community walks of peace, organize street-side memorial services, ceasefire agreements with gang leaders, and host a tree planting in honor of those who've died because of community violence.Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Community Assistant Support Team (CAST) will follow the advice of health officials, collaborate with law enforcement and politicians to ensure everyone's safety.For the past eight years, CAST has brought quality community service to families impacted by gun violence with de-escalation support, conflict resolution, retaliation prevention, and in hospital spiritual care. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, LEGOLAND had to shut its doors back in March. But that doesn't mean kids are losing out on the LEGO fun. LEGO "Master Builder" Jessica Ewud is passing along her creative knowledge through virtual LEGO art classes. "To keep the kids occupied," says Ewud. "While they are stuck inside during this pandemic with nothing to do."Ewud is a professional artist who was looking to transform her art in a creative way. Then one night, she had a dream she created an Abraham Lincoln made out of LEGO. She thought the idea was so brilliant, she went out and got the materials to make it."I'd always thought of Lego as a kids toy, but as an artist, I was looking at it differently. I was looking at it as an art medium," she said.Her art creations got her noticed, and she was chosen to participate in the competition show, LEGO Masters, where she became a show finalist. She also has one of her LEGO artworks on display at LEGOLAND."I got selected out of thousands of people to be on Lego Masters, and my peacock is on display at LEGOLAND," says Ewud.And now she is passing along her knowledge, by offering virtual LEGO art classes."I'm offering some awesome classes online via Outschool," said Ewud. "I try to make my classes as engaging and creative as possible. I feel when kids are stuck inside, the best thing they can do is be creative." 1391
