SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Starbucks that played a key role in redeveloping North Park will soon serve its last drink.Carly Clegg is a regular at the Starbucks next to The Observatory North Park."It's a bummer," said Clegg.The collection of notes posted inside the Starbucks tell the story: Customers bidding farewell to their Starbucks. It will close up for good Saturday. The apparent reason for the closing is one regular Robert Green knows well. Several customers who have asked employees why it's closing have been told an increase in homeless individuals are turning off customers, leading to a decline in sales."There are people camped out there all day. I noticed an uptick starting about five years ago," said Green."When I have family and friends that come in, they walk by and say, 'Let's go to another one,'" Clegg added.The closing comes some seven months after Starbucks announced customers would no longer be required to buy something to use the restroom or hang out. Critics said the policy could attract more homeless. Closures like this one are likely to add fuel to the debate."You hate for this business to go out with a whimper," said Green.The Starbucks opened up 13 years ago during the renovation of the North Park Theatre. Green was on the planning committee that approved the redevelopment project."They stuck out their necks. They were one of the first businesses in. They were a catalyst," said Green. Green says the long morning lines he saw at the Starbucks five years ago have disappeared. He hopes the closure won't be sign of things to come."A lot of people have put a lot of work and money into this neighborhood ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After receiving criticism from the Chicano Federation, UCSD Health officials met with the group Friday to review plans to recruit volunteers for a COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial.The Chicano Federations sent the following statement Thursday after hearing about UCSD’s plans to enroll approximately 1,600 volunteers to participate in the AstraZeneca COVIS-19 Phase 3 clinical trial:“Once again, the burden of COVID-19 is falling on communities of color. It is unfair that underserved communities who have the least access to information are now being targeted to participate in an experimental vaccine. This tactic, unfortunately, does not come as a surprise given that this country has a history of using people of color for experimental medical treatments. We did meet with UC San Diego, and we are going to be working with them in making sure that our community receives the education around these clinical trials.”Maldonado said community outreach would ensure that volunteers have all of the information necessary to make informed decisions.“When outreach is done in a way that is respectful to the community that different then some of the other approaches that other clinical trials are taking,” she said.UCSD made it clear that this trial is entirely voluntary, and consent forms will be available in English and Spanish.“I would just encourage anyone who has any questions or who might also be confused about the different trials and what’s going on, to contact the community-based organization that they know and trust to get some more information,” said Maldonado.The trial is expected to begin on Sept. 8. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A team of scientists at UC San Diego is getting into the beach business."We looked around and said 'what's the most important thing that we could possibly make?" said Biology Professor Stephen Mayfield. "And that answer is obvious. Flip flops and surfboards."Much more important than the products themselves is what they are made of. Mayfield wants to make plastic products out of more sustainable materials than the traditional petroleum. He says extracting the oil from algae is a much cleaner process. And because it is biodegradable, old and worn-out flip-flops and surfboards won't sit in landfills for thousands of years.The surfboards are virtually indistinguishable from traditional boards, and only cost about five dollars more. Mayfield says about a dozen professional surfers are already using algae boards in worldwide competition.His team at UCSD is working with a local manufacturer to bring the boards to market. Mayfield expects them to be ready by the end of spring.The flip flops are currently in the prototype stage. Mayfield plans to distribute several pairs to UCSD students this summer for testing. He hopes they will be ready for sale to the public by next year."My dream would be if we could make all the flip-flops in the world out of this material. This would have an enormous benefit to the planet."Mayfield's team are experimenting with the chemistry to control how quickly the flip-flops will biodegrade.
