SAN DIEGO (CNS) - California Highway Patrol officers arrested fewer people than last year for suspected drunk driving in San Diego County so far during the Christmas holiday enforcement period, the agency said today.CHP officers arrested 33 people in the county between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Sunday, an officer said. That's down from 40 arrests in the area at the same time last year.Statewide, the CHP arrested 639 people for suspected DUI violations Friday night and early Sunday, up from 604 in 2017.There were 20 traffic fatalities reported by law enforcement agencies across the state during the period -- including one in San Diego County. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Flames tore through a large commercial building in the Morena area Friday, causing extensive damage and sending a thick plume of smoke into the air near Mission Bay.The blaze in the 1200 block of Morena Boulevard erupted about 5:40 p.m., the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported.Police closed down the north-south street to through traffic while firefighters worked to subdue the intense flames.Crews were still working to get the blaze under control as of 6:30 p.m. and trying to get inside the two-story structure to check on a report there might be someone inside, according to SDFRD public affairs.There were no immediate reports of injuries. 677

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Eight more flu deaths were reported last week in the San Diego region, the county Health and Human Services Agency announced Wednesday.There were 264 lab-confirmed cases in total, a slight increase over the 257 cases reported the week of March 25. Emergency room visits by people with flu-like symptoms dropped from 3 percent to 2 percent over the same span, however.Overall, there have been 334 influenza-related deaths in San Diego County this season, compared to 82 during the same period last flu season.Victims have ranged in age from 1 to 101, and most had underlying medical conditions."Unfortunately, influenza-related deaths are still being reported, a sign that the flu continues to take a toll on the region," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer . "While influenza activitypersists, people should continue taking precautions to avoid getting sick, especially getting vaccinated."The high number of deaths this season is related to unusually severe strains of the virus but also improved tracking by local medical communities, according to the county. Overall, there have been 20,404 lab-confirmed cases this season, compared to 5,292 cases this time last year.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reminds people that it isn't too late to get vaccinated against the flu. In addition, health experts recommend frequent hand-washing, use of hand sanitizers, avoiding contact with sick people and cleaning commonly touched surfaces.Those with high risk to develop serious flu symptoms include people with chronic medical conditions, pregnant women and people 65 or older. 1636

The Children's Hospital of San Diego was renamed in Ernest and Evelyn Rady's honor in 2006 following their first gift of million to support the construction of the hospital's Acute Care Pavilion. In 2014, the Radys gave 0 million to support the establishment of Rady Children's Hospital's Institute for Genomic Medicine. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - At least one person was seriously injured this morning in a crash that may have involved an alcohol-impaired driver, the California Highway Patrol said.A car reportedly rolled over and caught fire about 3:44 a.m. on southbound state Route 15 near state Route 94, according to a California Highway Patrol incident log. Moments later, dispatchers were told the car appeared to have exploded.The fire-damaged car was then struck by another car, according to the incident log. A third vehicle was also involved in the crash, though details were scant.At least one person was left with serious injuries. The CHP described the incident as related to drunk driving, but it wasn't clear if anyone was taken into custody.  744
