CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - The family of an 18-year-old man shot and killed in Carlsbad last July says they’re upset with the sentence handed down for the man who supplied the gun in the shooting.Connor Mangseth is described by family as someone who lived life to the fullest, inspiring those around him to do the same. His mother said he would befriend anyone, no matter their background, and that’s what led to his death this year. On July 23, Connor went to the home of a friend and 19-year-old Gerardo Gonzales, another friend, was also present. Gonzalez was already facing felony charges for another crime and was out on bail.RELATED: Teen girl, young man arrested in Carlsbad shooting deathGerardo had a gun, which he gave to a 16-year-old female who was also with them. She said she thought it was empty when she pulled the trigger, but there was a bullet inside, which struck and killed Connor. Connor’s sister said it’s what happened next that deserves justice.“The worst part is the things that happened after that. It was that Gerardo Gonzales and this minor left to go hide the gun, they created a false story involving two other gunman and they spent 20 minutes doing this instead of anyone calling 911 or getting help,” said Sabrina Mangseth.Gerardo was charged with Accessory After the Fact and Child Endangerment. The Mangseth family said they are angry at the court system for how they handled these charges. Connor’s mother, Maureen, said they got silence from the District Attorney’s office, then she got a call saying Gerardo had taken a plea deal, something she was not told about ahead of time. She said she feels like the prosecutor was trying to rush the case rather than find justice, adding that to her knowledge, investigators have not completed their investigation and have more evidence to review.Sabrina started an online petition to bring awareness to the lack of communication during the case, gathering more than 6,000 signatures. A description in the petition describes Connor’s passion for life and the family’s desire for the court to take back the plea deal and wait to make any decisions until all evidence has been gathered.Ultimately, a second prosecutor was brought in to handle the case, but the guilty plea remained. Wednesday, Gerardo was sentenced to probation and up to one year in jail. Maureen said it doesn’t look likely that he’ll serve jail time. Sabrina did add that the second prosecutor did a better job of communicating with their family.“Gerardo Gonzales himself, in the trial, said Connor was my best friend and for him to do that to his best friend, I can’t even imagine what he would do to a stranger, someone else,” said Sabrina, worried about the lack of punishment for Gerardo.When asked for a response to the sentencing and plea deal, a spokesperson for the District Attorney’s office said: “This is obviously a tragic case and we have been in very close contact with the victim's family in recent weeks as we continue to seek justice for their loss. Two defendants were charged in connection with this murder. The defendant who is not the actual killer pleaded guilty to both counts he was charged with, including Accessory After the Fact and Child Endangerment, with an agreement from the People that there would be no opposition to a local jail sentence. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Four astronauts are heading to Florida's Kennedy Space Center for SpaceX's second crew launch next weekend. This time there are twice as many astronauts as the test flight earlier this year, and the mission will last for a full six months. The three Americans and one Japanese astronaut are due in Florida on Sunday. They're scheduled to rocket away Saturday night to the International Space Station. For NASA, it marks the long-awaited start of regular crew rotations, with private companies providing the lifts. Cathedral High School in Indianapolis announced the official name change of its entrepreneurship course to the "Chris Beaty Entrepreneurship Class."Chris Beaty was an Indianapolis business owner and former Indiana University football player who was beloved in the community.Beaty was one of two men who were shot and killed when violence erupted during police brutality demonstrations in Downtown Indianapolis. He was 38."There was so much pain caused by Chris's tragic murder, I felt it was too narrow to hear him only referred to as a former Cathedral and IU football player," Alex Purvis, who played football with Beaty at Cathedral High School in the early 2000's, said. "Chris was so much more than that, and I want to do my part to make sure his legacy continues at Cathedral."Purvis spearheaded the initiative to make the name change of the private school's entrepreneur course because he wanted to make sure Beaty was known for more than just football. Purvis says Beaty was not only an entrepreneur but says he was a friend, he was compassionate, and he always made people feel welcomed."He made everyone feel like a VIP. Few people have that ability," Purvis said.Purvis only knew Beaty for one year at Cathedral — but that was enough for Beaty to make an impact on Purvis.Purvis described himself as, "the smallest kid on the football team" his sophomore year, and Beaty was a senior star-athlete."Years later, when I started running into Chris downtown and various events, Chris always made me feel like I was the star quarterback on Cathedral's team. For no other reason than that was his genuine personality—he made people feel special. His warmth and positivity was infectious," Purvis said.Purvis said to best #LiveLikeChris, it's fitting to name Cathedral's entrepreneurship class in Beaty's honor. Beaty was always working on "the next big thing," Purvis said."I think the root of entrepreneurship is having the ability to take an idea and outlining the steps to make it happen," Purvis said. "That's exactly what Chris did. He was a doer, a leader, and a builder—his friends turned into business partners and vice versa."Both Cathedral High School and Indiana University have also created the "Chris Beaty Foundation Scholarship," in his honor."Using that foundation and exploring entrepreneurship in high school will hopefully open students' eyes to all of the possibilities they have in college and beyond. Students should know they are capable of creating their path, just like Chris Beaty did," Purvis said. "And they should know that they, too, have what it takes to live like Chris. (KGTV) — U.S. history from the Mayflower through the American Revolution is on display in Carlsbad.The Green Dragon Tavern and Museum, off Interstate 5 at Palomar Airport Road, offers a full-service restaurant and a chance to look at original documents from the country's Colonial Period."Not a lot of families have the money or time or resources to be able to travel back east and experience these things first hand," says Green Dragon General Manager John Lek. "A lot of our guests say they feel like they're in Boston or New England without having to leave San Diego."The museum's artifacts are all part of a private collection owned by a local man, who asked not to be identified. He wanted to share his collection with the rest of San Diego, and put them on display at the restaurant.Among the items are documents signed by 14 of America's founding fathers. That gives visitors a chance to see the signatures of Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams, John Hancock and more.Lek says just seeing these items can give people a deeper link to their past."There is something authentic and something that really settles in when you have a direct connection with our forefathers," says Lek.The museum has been open for five years. Right now, everything fits within a single room. But there are plans for expansion.Lek says the museum will open a second room with more interactive and hands-on technology, as well as more artifacts from America's past.Admission to the museum is free, and it's open anytime the restaurant is open.
