CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - For the first time, a local coaching legend is speaking out, 5 months after he was banned from the campus of Coronado High.Retired water polo coach Randy Burgess is accused in a complaint of molesting a former middle school student.A mural of Burgess remains over the pool his water polo teams has used during his 3 decades of coaching, which includes nearly 20 section championships for high school boys' and girls' teams. Three of his players have competed in the Olympics.It's a legacy now in danger."My feeling is beyond frustration. A lot of hurtful things have happened," said Burgess.In May, the former middle school student - now 18 - filed a complaint with Coronado unified.In it, the teen claims during the 7th grade while playing for a club polo team that shared the pool with Burgess' teams, Burgess hugged, kissed, and eventually raped the child, in places like bathrooms and Burgess' car.The school district removed Burgess from the classroom in April, before denying the claim in May.Burgess says his attorney learned the District Attorney's office has declined to prosecute, but 10News is still working to confirm that."My immediate response was this was a case of mistaken identity.  My coaching and teaching career never paralleled with this this individual," said Burgess, who denies ever interacting with the student.Burgess tell us he doesn't know why someone would make up such a claim. He's now suing for reinstatement to teach physical education at Coronado High. In 2015, he retired from coaching, but was still mentoring coaches."I've told my children and my athletes: It's not always what happens to you, but how you handle it. I'm trying to live through those words now," said Burgess.It's not the first time Burgess has been named in a complaint.In 1995, a city supervisor sued him and the city of Coronado, claiming Burgess berated his players, made sexually inappropriate statements in front of students and sometimes allowed male swimmers to swim naked.Burgess says that case was settled with a confidentiality clause."I can only repeat to myself that the people who know me, know me, and the others will come up with their own conclusions," said Burgess.In a statement, Coronado Unified declined to discuss personnel matters, but did say "...the District takes such claims very seriously.  When the allegations became known, the District followed policy and protocol by taking immediate action to protect the safety and security of District students and staff ..."10News reached out to the lawyers representing the former student but have yet to hear back. 2638

The United States pledged to withdraw from the landmark agreement last year.Global leaders and officials are now gathering for two weeks of meetings at the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, or COP24, to create a rulebook that will turn the Paris climate agreement into a workable reality. Cleveland Police say a 16-year-old boy wound up in the ICU at Metro Health because his dad forced him to confront a bully.Police put a warrant out for 36-year-old Carlos Conner, wanted on a felony child endangerment charge.According to a police report, last week Conner forced his 16-year-old son to fight his bully on the street.“My nephew seen the guy who’s been bullying him for a year and a half and he jumped out the car,” said Conner’s sister, Cynthia Conner.Conner says the police report doesn't tell the whole story and that her nephew took it upon himself to fight the other teenager. Both are students at James Rhodes High School.“I think he did the parental, smart thing, let them fight and said ok, after the fight was over, said ok, the fight was over, took his child and took him to the hospital,” she said.Except, when the 16 year old arrived at the hospital, police say it was discovered he had bleeding in his brain and was taken to the intensive care unit.The bullying, according to Conner, started on social media. Her brother, she says, made numerous attempts to stop it, but the problem was never solved.“This has been going on for a year and half, you don’t think my brother could’ve forced him to get out the car a year and a half ago? Here, here he is, I’m going to bring you right to him, fight him. My brother’s not a bad guy,” she said.Conner claims this was in fact a dispute between her brother and his ex-wife who filed the police report.According to the police report, detectives did not get a statement from the 16 year old and have not yet identified the other teen involved. 1616

Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Mackensie Alexander was arrested in Florida on the same day that he left the team while authorities were searching for his missing father.Alexander was arrested Tuesday on a battery charge, Collier County jail records show.NFL.com reported that the 26-year-old Immokalee native left training camp Tuesday after his father disappeared while picking palmetto berries with another man in Okeechobee County.According to the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office, Jean Alexandre, 65, was on a prairie somewhere in the northwest portion of the county Monday when his companion left him behind. 622

(KGTV) -- A driver was detained late Tuesday evening after military officials said he tried to enter Naval Base Coronado property without authorization.The incident occurred at around 10:15 p.m. at the Stockdale Boulevard gate at Naval Air Station North Island, near Third Street and Alameda Boulevard.Kevin Dixon, with Naval Base Coronado Public Affairs, said a vehicle tried to enter the base but was stopped by barriers.Dixon confirmed the driver was detained, but no other information on the incident was released.The investigation forced the closure of the gate for several hours.There were no reported injuries to any military personnel. 668
