A staff member at a Michigan school is on administrative leave after a student says a teacher assaulted him for not standing for the Pledge of Allegiance. According to Brian Chaney, his 11-year old son Stone Chaney was in homeroom class the first week of school when a teacher snatched him out of his seat and forced him to stand for the Pledge. "He said, 'During the Pledge the teacher snatched me out of my chair,'” Brian said. Stone is a sixth grader at East Middle School in Farmington Hills, Michigan. Stone says he’s been sitting for the pledge since second grade when his father explained why he had the choice. His father says there’s never been an issue until now. Stone says the next day, another teacher yelled at him for the same thing, asking him if he had permission to sit during the pledge."For him to be violently snatched out of his chair by a lady and order him to stand and for her to just glare at him, it's wrong, it's a violation of civil rights," Chaney said.Farmington Public Schools Superintendent George Heitsch says they’re investigating the allegations.“We respect the rights of any individual to make personal choices around issues of faith and beliefs. We're disappointed that we're even having the conversation,” Heitsch said. One staff member has been placed on administrative leave.  1380

A total of 13 people linked to a militia group have been charged by the federal government and the state of Michigan in to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.Six men — Adam Fox, Barry Croft, Ty Garbin, Kaleb Franks, Daniel Harris and Brandon Caserta — were charged by the federal government, according to a criminal complaint from the FBI. Croft is from Delaware; the rest are Michigan residents.Additionally, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced that seven other people, linked to the Michigan-based militia group "Wolverine Watchmen" have been charged by the state in relation to the plot.According to the FBI's complaint, the militia attempted to recruit members for the operation, which included storming the Capitol building in Lansing and taking hostages, including Whitmer.The suspects, now under arrest, are alleged to have called on the groups’ members to identify the home addresses of law enforcement officers in order to target them; made threats of violence to instigate a civil war leading to societal collapse; and engaged in the planning and training for an operation to attack the state Capitol building and kidnap government officials, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.In total, 19 state felony charges were filed by the Attorney General against seven individuals known to be members of the militia group, Wolverine Watchmen or associates of Wolverine Watchmen.The plan was reportedly supposed to be executed before the November 2020 election.The militia group reportedly held several meetings over the summer, where they participated in firearms training and combat drills.According to the complaint, they also attempted to build IED devices, which were faulty and did not detonate as planned.The group then reportedly decided to abduct the governor at her vacation home in western Michigan and take her to a secure location in Wisconsin for "trial."In August, federal officials say the group allegedly conducted surveillance of her home on two occasions.On Wednesday night, the FBI and Michigan State Police spent hours raiding a home in Hartland, Michigan — a town about an hour west of Detroit — on Wednesday night, which continued into the early morning of Thursday.The house is located on Lansing Avenue in Hartland Meadows near M-59 in Livingston County.Several Michigan State Police vehicles, including their SWAT team, were also on scene alongside FBI agents. Some officers were dressed in camo gear carrying guns. A Muslim woman arrested during protests in Miami has allegedly been forced to remove her religious head cover at a correctional center and her mugshot has been taken without it, according to her lawyer, in an incident that has focused attention on questions about religious rights while in custody. Alaa Massri, 18, was one of several people arrested on June 10 following demonstrations near the statues of Christopher Columbus and Juan Ponce de Leon in Miami. Lawyer, Khurrum Wahid, says Massri’s hijab is part of a sincerely held religious belief that she has and that it was removed against her will. Massri claims officers forcibly removed her hijab after she didn't take it off for her booking photo. She says it was not returned to her for several hours. A Miami station connected with Miami-Dade officials, who stated they have policies in place to accommodate inmates who wear head coverings for religious reasons. “We are committed to ensuring that individual’s faith-based beliefs and practices are respected and will review this incident to ensure compliance with our policies and this commitment," the statement read.The arrest during the current wave of protests against police brutality and racial injustice thrust into the spotlight an issue that has played out in different parts of the country over the years. 1334

A San Diego woman spent months stealing from visitors inside some of the city's fanciest waterfront hotels, Harbor Police say.Anjeanette Crumrine, 49, allegedly stole more than ,000 worth of items -- largely from the Hilton Bayfront, Manchester Grand Hyatt, and Sheraton Harbor Island. Harbor Police say she also stole a violin worth ,000 from a classroom at Point Loma Nazarene University. "It worked for her, so she just continued to do what she was comfortable with," said Harbor Police Sgt. Michael Dye. Crumrine often targeted guests attending conventions at the large hotels. She'd walk in, pick up a suitcase, purse, or briefcase, go into an empty bathroom, pick through it, before leaving, police say. Crumrine is also accused of using the stolen credit cards to buy gift cards, and one time changed into stolen clothes inside one of the hotel bathrooms before walking out. "If it's a convention you have people moving in and out of rooms," Dye said. "It's an easy target because she would go unnoticed."Police arrested Crumrine?on April 18 after a slow speed chase through Valencia Park. But the threat of petty crime isn't over.Harbor Police report 218 property crime instances so far this year, up 22 percent from the same time period in 2017."We're just extra careful. We carry all of our stuff most of the time," said Jennifer Jones, visiting from Denver. "I don't put my stuff down. I hear too many stories like that."Crumrine is now in custody at Las Colinas, accused of, identity theft, burglary, and felony evading police, among other charges. A Nevada Sheriff has taken to Facebook to apologize after leaving her gun in the bathroom of a casino.Nye County Sheriff Sharon Wehrly left her Glock .45 in a restroom toilet stall last week at Saddle West, a hotel, casino and RV Park in Pahrump.Casino General Manager Gregg Schatzman confirmed there was a weapon recovered last week in the bathroom by a porter who was cleaning. He said the porter turned it over to security, who then turned it over to him where it was locked up until the sheriff reclaimed it.Wehrly believes the incident happened last Tuesday or Wednesday but could not confirm which day she left her gun behind. She said she was only separated from her gun for about 10 minutes. She realized it was missing and went back to the restaurant where she'd been having lunch. She says she never left the building."It's a big responsibility to have a firearm and an even bigger responsibility to make sure it's kept in a safe environment all the time. However, people are human and mistakes happen," Wehrly said. "A gun is a tool, and we should always keep track of our tools. I was remiss in this case because I was on the phone dealing with an emergency. I was blessed that someone responsible found it."Schatzman added that there's always a concern when a weapon is left in a restroom. He said leaving a gun, especially a duty weapon, is very, very serious."There was a hole and fortunately we picked it up and so we're in good shape," Schatzman said.He emphasized his high regard for the Nye County Sheriff's Office and their quick response time whenever the casino needs them.Wehrly admitted that this is not the first time she's left her gun behind, though the others, she says, were in the distant past.She recalled a 1984 incident where she left her gun at the U.S. Department of Energy headquarters in Mercury and ended up working an entire shift without it. She also recalled an incident in the 1990s but said the gun wasn't left in a public facility. Schatzman said a California Highway Patrol officer left his gun and badge in the casino restaurant last year. 2183
