LA MESA (CNS) - A 29-year-old man was shot multiple times and died in a La Mesa shopping center, police said Saturday.The shooting happened at 9:38 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of the Marketplace at Lake Murray Village, 5600 Lake Murray Blvd., according to Lt. Greg Runge of the La Mesa Police Department.Police received multiple calls of gunshots heard in the parking lot, Runge said. One caller reported seeing a victim down on the ground."Responding officers located the unresponsive victim and discovered he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso," Runge said.Officers began CPR and rendered aid until medics arrived, the lieutenant said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.A witness reported seeing a dark sedan, possibly a two-door, leaving the scene at a high rate of speed southbound on Lake Murray Boulevard, Runge said, but it was unknown if the vehicle was involved in the shooting.Anyone with information about the crime was asked to call the La Mesa Police Department at 619-667-1400, or the Crime Stoppers' anonymous toll-free tip line at 888-580-TIPS. 1103
Laura is now a depression, less than 24 hours after striking Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane early Thursday morning. The center of Laura has moved into Arkansas, dumping heavy rain there. There was also a tornado watch for parts of Arkansas late Thursday. Laura made landfall near Cameron, Louisiana at about 1 a.m. CT on Thursday as an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 storm with 150 mph sustained winds, and “unsurvivable storm surge.” 449
LA MESA (KGTV) -- East County residents are worried about thousands of parolees flocking to their community. The state wants to add a parole office in the city of La Mesa but residents are not happy about the proposed location, saying it's too close to their schools and homes. “I’m very uncomfortable with the prospect of violent and sexual offenders routinely coming into my neighborhood,” says Susan Nichols with the Grossmont- Mt. Helix Improvement Association. The new building sits at the end of Grossmont Summit Drive, directly behind homes on Mt. Helix. The location is in close proximity to local schools, less than a mile from Grossmont High School and Mt. Helix Academy. “The bus stop that would service this facility is directly in front of Grossmont High School, the same stop that the students will be using,” says Nichols.Supervisor Dianne Jacob sent her community a letter the Department of Corrections addressed to the La Mesa City Clerk. Parent Wendy Tinsley Becker says she’s extremely concerned about the children in this area. Her family made copies of the letter and hand-delivered them to neighbors living close to the site. Supervisor Jacob sent 10News a statement that says in part: “I’m deeply troubled by the state proposal and I share the residents’ concerns about the impact on public safety. Allowing convicted criminals to frequent an area that close to thousands of Grossmont High School students and quiet neighborhoods is a terrible idea.”The La Mesa City Clerk says they are doing what they can to prevent the parole office from coming to the city. 10News reached out to the State Department of Corrections about the location. They responded in part:“The men and women who will be served at this office lived there before they were incarcerated and have returned to the community. New cases in prisons this week reached their highest level since testing began in the spring, far outstripping previous peaks in April and August.“That number is a vast undercount,” said Homer Venters, the former chief medical officer at New York’s Rikers Island jail complex.Venters has conducted more than a dozen court-ordered COVID-19 prison inspections around the country. “I still encounter prisons and jails where, when people get sick, not only are they not tested but they don’t receive care. Named for the ancient British site Stonehenge, where the sun lines up among ancient stones on the solstice, the sun lines up with the gap in La Jolla’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography pier on certain days of the year. The natural phenomenon makes for spectacular photos. This summer, Scrippshenge is set to take place August 7 - 9, according to the Photo Ephemeris app. “You might even get the shot on Aug 10/11 also, probably with a partially set sun,” says Stephen Trainor of Crookneck Apps. “You'll see the sunset line is ever so slightly to the north of the pier center: that's what you need, because sunset is the moment the sun disappears below the horizon, hence in order to frame the setting sun between the legs of the pier, it still needs to be just above the horizon, and therefore true sunset has to be just slightly to the north,” says Trainor.
