(KGTV) - There were heated moments Wednesday while a group was defending the Christopher Columbus statue at discovery park in Chula Vista.Chula Vista City Councilman John McCann, with members of the Knights of Columbus standing by his side, called for the statue to be left alone."You can't change history," he said. "We should be able to accept all groups, you can't lift one group by destroying another group.""We're here to oppose the removal of the statue," said Rene Trevino, a member of the Knights of Columbus.The statue, which has been in place for nearly three decades, has stirred up controversy in the past.Thursday the city's Human Relations Commission will vote on a resolution to not only remove the statue and change the name of discovery park, but to change Columbus Day to Indigenous People's Day in Chula Vista.Last Columbus Day someone splashed red paint all over the statue, and before that someone plaque set in front of the statue was stolen."It's been a community family park and we've had opponents of Christopher Columbus use violence to vandalize and destroy the park multiple times, costing tax payers," said McCann.Many people have called the meaning behind the statue and the name of the park both painful and offensive.A woman in a car driving by the park Wednesday began shouting, "This is indigenous land, take that statue down!"She went on to say Christopher Columbus was just the beginning of an attempted assassination of Indigenous peoples.The topic caused people to clash at the park."You have these people trying to advocate for an idea that we're sick and tired of living under," said Rafael Bautista, who wants the statue removed.He was then confronted by a man who opposes the removal."What are you living under?" the man asked him. "What are you living under?"At one point Chula Vista Police officers arrived at the park, but things had settled down."Instead of trying to argue over things that happened over 500 years ago, we should be tackling today's issues," said McCann.Raeanne Herrera, a resident of Eastlake and part of the Jicarilla Apache Nation stopped by the park to offer her take."We can right the wrongs that have been done," she said. "That statue is the constant reminder of a beginning of a genocide. They tried, but they didn't."She went on to say change needs to start with education."Native American issues were never taught in school, what was I taught? Oh, that the pilgrims and Indians got together and shared a meal. That's an absolute lie, it was a celebration for a massacre that occurred," she explained.Both groups say they will continue effort to get their way, no matter what City of Chula Vista officials ultimately decide.If Thursday's resolution passes, it will head to the full city council for the final decision. 2818

CINCINNATI – Mary Lee Tracy says she trusted Larry Nassar like she would her father or her brother, but she was fooled by a ”master manipulator.”Tracy said on Thursday she feels she is the right person to fill her new appointment with US Gymnastics and wants to keep the job. But Tracy also said she would resign if what she calls “cyber bullying” toward her doesn’t stop.Speaking at her Fairfield, Ohio gym, the owner and coach of Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy strongly condemned Nassar and didn’t deny the positive comments she made about the since-convicted sexual abuser to Scripps affiliate WCPO in Cincinnati in December 2016. Tracy’s two-year-old comment sparked a controversy this week when Aly Raisman, an Olympic champion and Nassar survivor, went on Twitter and protested Tracy’s new national post as Elite Development Coordinator.As much as Tracy said she wanted the job, she also said she has received three “fairly threatening emails” and one that said she “should be in a jail cell next to Larry Nassar.” She has also been vilified on social media to the point that she has already told US Gymnastics she would not keep job if it means hurting her family.“What I feel I need to say is that when I saw Aly putting out some things about something I said two years ago as this was all coming out, that was my truth,” Tracy said about her 2016 comments about Nassar, the former national team doctor now accused of sexually assaulting up to 250 women and girls and serving up to 165 years in prison.“Larry had been treating my athletes for well over 25 years and had served them very well and had helped me and my athletes return to action," she said Thursday.  "He had been someone that we all unfortunately had trusted and depended on, so when I was asked about my experience with him, that’s what I said. So I’m not denying that I said that.“Would I say that anymore? Absolutely not … The man is a monster.  But at that moment, I looked at him like I would my dad or my brother. That was the level of trust I had.“But as we all find out, these people are that good. They are master manipulators. (KGTV) — Chula Vista Police have identified a woman who was found shot to death in a field earlier this month.Police said 23-year-old Christina Garcia was found on Aug. 5 at about 6:30 a.m. in a field near the 3100 block of Main Street. When police arrived at the scene, they said it appeared she had an apparent gunshot wound and considered the incident a homicide.CVPD says the circumstances and motive behind Garcia's death were still unclear as of Thursday.Anyone with information on a potential suspect(s) or who may have witnessed the incident are asked to call San Diego Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 637

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A pedestrian died and others, including children, were injured Monday in a crash involving a construction truck in Chula Vista. The truck driver lost control about 1:15 p.m. in the 500 block of 4th Ave near Shasta Street, police said. The location is a residential street near Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista. The truck hit parked cars including a black pickup, which then struck a pedestrian before flipping over, said officers.Paramedics took the pedestrian to the hospital with critical injuries. The victim, an 81-year-old, later died, police confirmed. A mother and her two children, a baby and a girl, were in a parked car and suffered minor injuries. Chula Vista police are investigating the cause of the crash. At this time, police say it's unclear whether or not drugs or alcohol were involved. 844
